Exterior of Bunce Rental. Bunce's motto was "We Rent Most Everything" including party supplies, invalid equipment, vacation trailers, tools and tractors. One of the Bunce Ford vans is parked outside the company office on South Tacoma Way on August 2, 1961; the company advertised prompt delivery service. Interior of Bunce Rental. A customer completes paperwork as he rents equipment from Bunce Rental on August 2, 1961. Bunce Rental was located at 4516 South Tacoma Way in 1961 and is still in operation there 43 years later. More than 300 different items could be rented there from vacation trailers to bulldozers to baby cribs to silver service. Customers were aware that no gasoline was provided and Bunce charged for the time checked out, not for time used unless a machine was metered. (TNT 9-8-61 Ad, p. 11)

ca. 1961. A Hyster lift truck loads lumber for shipment at the Klickitat, Washington, sawmill. The Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway car is nearly full. The St. Regis Klickitat mill produces ponderosa pine exclusively. Ponderosa pine was an extremely versatile softwood, noted for its smoothness and fine appearance. It was used for millwork, interior finish, and residential and light commercial buildings. This picture was used in the 1961 St. Regis annual report. Exterior - Thunderbird Garden Apartments. The Thunderbird Garden Apartments used a Northwest Indian motif as a decoration on the building's cedar-sided exterior. The 51-unit complex was built in 1961 in close proximity to the Thunderbird Shopping Center on Steilacoom Blvd. Each section of the apartment complex was no more than two stories high. All apartments had all-electric kitchens and heating and had insulated and soundproof ceilings and walls. Wall to wall carpeting was provided in the spacious living rooms and bedrooms. In addition, all the one and two bedroom units were pre-wired for phone and television. Parking was convenient with spaces located in the back of each unit. A luxurious swimming pool and tennis courts provided the residents with a country club atmosphere. Rents ranged from $75-135, unfurnished, with additional cost for furnishings. Enjoying a sunny day in August, 1961, are the residents of the Thunderbird Garden Apartments, a new complex on Steilacoom Blvd. They are lounging around and cooling off in the king-sized Minnetonka heated swimming pool. Many of the apartments had balconies that overlooked the pool. The apartments, owned by H.A. Briggs, were built across the street from the new Thunderbird Shopping Center. Exterior - Temple Baptist Church, 1961. Designed by Silas E. Nelsen and built of reinforced concrete in 1949, the Temple Baptist Church was located at 245 Saint Helens Avenue. Dr. Robert L. Powell was the church's pastor. The sanctuary was completed in 1960. Temple Baptist has been located at 1108 Columbia Ave. in Fircrest since 2001.

ca. 1926. Architectural rendering of residence for Dr. William W. Mattson by Hill and Mock, Architects, 229 Perkins Building. Nelson J. Morrison, designer and delineator. Drawing dated 07-29-1925. The home was designed in the style of an English manor. This house was the scene of the 1936 kidnapping of Charles Mattson. It was demolished in May of 2006.
New construction by Dean Lyster Construction Co. This home in the University Estates subdivision was included in the 12th annual Tour of Homes held in mid-August, 1961. It was one of eighteen new homes on display in the tour sponsored by the Home Builders Association of Greater Tacoma. The "modern colonial" featured a recreation and family room with sliding glass doors to the rear court, separate living room with colonial fireplace, tile entry, oak paneling, 1.5 baths, and a two-car attached garage wtih automatic electric door available. Weisfield's on Broadway underwent extensive remodeling in 1961; view of elaborate dangling ceiling lamps, showcases of rings, watches, and display tables of assorted costume jewelry. The $150,000 renovation of the 45-year-old Tacoma firm included new fixtures, lighting, and glass displays. Their building had been constructed in 1890 and previously housed a furniture store, the Orpheum Theater, offices, shoe and clothing stores before Weisfield & Goldberg Jewelers took occupancy in the late 1930's. The store's name changed slightly to Weisfield's, Inc., with additional emphasis on "credit jewelers." (TNT 9-6-61, A-6,7)

Night exposure of Weisfield's. Weisfield's, a credit jeweler, was located for many years in the 900 block of Broadway. Under the direction of John Lade, general contractor, the store underwent extensive exterior and interior remodeling in 1961. An August 31, 1961, night exposure of Weisfield's facade shows that exterior remodeling was not quite complete. A desire by general manager Jack Gruber for "something out of the ordinary" lead to an unusual mosaic facade, part of the $150,000 renovation of the 45-year-old Tacoma firm. (TNT 9-6-61, A-6,7)

The Tacoma Civic Orchestra posed in November of 1925 outside of the Scottish Rite Temple, 5 So. G St., where they performed their first concert of the winter season on November 22, 1925. Every seat in the house was full. Prof. D.P Nason was conductor and director; Carl Bergman was concert master. The group was organized by Prof. Nason, director of music at Lincoln High School, and was composed of 65 young amateur musicians who volunteered their time and effort. Located at 235 Broadway with views of Commencement Bay, it was designed by well-known architect Robert Billsbrough Price. O & M Builders Supply was listed as the builder with Ostruske -Murphy, Inc., as contractors. All one and two-bedroom units would have balconies at the rear of the building. Children eating breakfast with mom standing by. This is possibly an example of the "great room" concept whereby the living room and kitchen area blend in seamlessly. The little boy and girl, bowls of cereal before them, are seated before a long wooden curved counter that extends slightly into the living room; the other side of the counter has kitchen cabinets and drawers below it. Other eyecatching features include a recessed wall to fit a small sofa and to highlight family photos and a long beam providing a silent demarcation between the two living spaces. Lakewood Hospital. Designed by Alfred Simonson, the Lakewood General Hospital was dedicated on April 30, 1961. The $1,900,000 two-story structure was constructed of reinforced concrete faced with brick and stucco on land donated by Dr. Lawrence E. Skinner. 12,000 people toured the new hospital at its first open house. The hospital was to serve the Lakewood community for 28 years until it was replaced by a new hospital at 11315 Bridgeport Way in 1989. TPL-6597

Group portrait of Automotive Technical Training Council graduates and guests, taken on November 9, 1961. All school graduates and their guests were eligible to attend meetings of the Automotive Technical Training Council, held on the second Thursday of each month at the ATTC Center at 3825 Yakima Avenue South. Louie Brulc and R.W. Hite were directors of training for the center. The ATTC was an organization of automotive servicemen dedicated to the establishment of uniform procedures in automotive serving and restoration of public confidence in quality automotive repair.
