One of the most popular extracurricular organizations at the College of Puget Sound in 1947 was the workshop band under the direction of Leroy Ostransky. The band was organized in 1946 to play arrangements written by Professor Ostransky's students. Before he died in 1993 at the age of 75, Dr. Ostransky had published five books on jazz and had five major works performed by the Seattle Symphony. In 1975 he was named one of the nation's 12 outstanding university professors by People magazine.

College of Puget Sound presented their annual Christmas Vespers in the college chapel, the vespers were open to the public. The men's and women's choirs, Campus Playcrafters, choral readers and two children were all part of the cast, which was directed by Martha Pearl Jones. College of Puget Sound officials and West Disinfecting Company representatives have just inspected the newly refinished gym floor in the CPS Gymnasium. The floor has been re-done and coated with "lastincote" for durability. The shiny new gymnasium floor is now ready for CPS indoor sports to begin.

C.P.S. students opened their hearts - and wallets - in support of French orphan boys. The student body decided by ballot to "adopt" the De Bon Secours French orphanage for the rest of the winter (February-May,1948) and signed pledges totaling approximately $1000. The money raised would be sent to C.A.R.E. and the organization would send food and clothing packages. It cost about $29 to support one child per month. The orphanage was in debt due to France's post-war situation and money raised would help the orphanage through the winter months before spring crops and before Marshall Plan aid started. De Bon Secours housed 35 boys between the ages of 4-14. Their parents had either been killed during the war or sent to German concentration camps. The drive to collect funds, sponsored by the International Relations Club, began the first week of February, 1948. By February 6, the campaign neared the $1000 in pledges redeemed and a check was turned over to Edward J. Cooper, Bank of California assistant manager, who handled the C.A.R.E. gifts. CPS. The College of Puget Sound SPURS hosted the regional meeting of SPURS, the national women's honorary service organization, March 5, 6, and 7, 1948, on the CPS campus. Members from Washington, Oregon and Montana attended. Three main topics were discussed: new member selection, activities and expansion of activities. Home portrait of Mrs Schneider, Anderson Hall, CPS, Mrs. Hosmer, News Tribune. Mrs. Carolyn Schneider was the head of the Tacoma Art League who had galleries in Jones Hall at the College of Puget Sound. She was also the housemother for Anderson Hall, a women's dormitory on the campus of the College of Puget Sound. She stands by a bookcase with a drawing of a goat above it. Several interiors at CPS, Murtough Supply, Frank Murtough. Murtough Supply Company, owned by Frank J. Murtough, handled cleaning supplies and equipment and were distributors of Franklin's R.G. Products, Clarke & Finnell Floor Machines and Multi-Clean Vacuums. They were located at 706 Pacific Avenue. This interior view features an open hallway with seating, an elaborately carved side table, a portrait of a man wearing academic robes, and a grandfather clock. Draperies are closed over the windows. Ed Miller, President of Miller Construction Company, Inc. was one of the founders of the Homebuilders' Association of Tacoma. This organization was affiliated with the National Association of Homebuilders of the United States; the group promoted better values in homes, developed efficiency in the homebuilding industry, and they continuously promoted long-range plans to expand further building developments in this area (T.N.T., 4/26/49, p. 22).

A model home was built outside the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse to be displayed during the 1952 Home Show. A capacity crowd attended Jack Lacy's Sales Clinic at the College of Puget Sound that was presented by the Tacoma Sales Executive Club over three evenings. All shows were sold out days ahead of the lectures. William S. Crean, vice president of Lacey Sales Institute, flew from San Francisco for a three-city itinerary which included Vancouver, B.C., and Seattle, and Tacoma. (TNT, 2/2/1952, p.19)

The fourth annual Home Show was held from April 3-6, 1952 and had 20,000 square feet of commercial exhibits designed to entice homeowners improve their standard of living and to spruce up their homes.

Booth at 1952 Home Show sponsored by South Tacoma Heating Co., at 5625 So. Montgomery, and Rossoe Manufacturing Co. Cardboard cuties in corsets stand among the furnaces to advertise that it's "time to modernize with Honeywell clock thermostats." The fourth annual Home Show, sponsored by the Tacoma Master Builders, drew crowds of approximately 13, 480 over its four day run. The Show had commercial exhibits, a furnished model home on site and working demonstrations of household skills.

Gaily fronted by a white pickett fence, this booth at the 1952 Tacoma Home Show looks comfy and homey as befits its sponsor Lindstrom's Home Furnishings, "your friendly country store." The display has a dining room set for $229.95, an easy chair for $129.95 and a love seat for $159.95. Also exhibited are carpet samples and boldly patterned drapes. Lindstrom's was located at 8021 Portland Ave.

Rose Marie Murphy and Bruce Courtney Dennis were married November 30, 1952, at the Gail Pauline Day Memorial Chapel at the College of Puget Sound. Rose Marie and Bruce are surrounded by members of their families. Rose Marie was the daughter of Kenneth and Rosa Murphy. Cheerleading camp. About 90 cheerleaders gathered at the University of Puget Sound in mid-July of 1969 for several days of cheerleading camp. Wearing their respective school cheer outfits, the junior high and high school pepsters hailing from Washington and Idaho posed in front of the university's music building. New science complex at the University of Puget Sound. After more than two years of construction, the new science building, named in honor of longtime U.P.S. president R. Franklin Thompson, was dedicated in April, 1968. The $4,000,000 science complex was the largest building project in the school's (then) 80-year history. It was designed by Nelson, Karona & Zeigler, architects, and built by McDonald Bldg. Co. View of U-shaped, three story Thompson Hall facing Union Ave., shows off the Tudor-Gothic brick architecture. A circular fountain, 74-feet in diameter, lay in the middle of the complex. The fountain would become the scene in the coming years of much illicit wading, dunkings and pranks.
