Closer look at the Tacoma Mall Shopping Center as seen by air on April 2, 1973. 25 more stores would open on July 25th bringing the total number of stores found within the Mall to 110. Construction would begin soon on the two-story Rhodes Bros. department store at the far west end. Prominent buildings easily noted in this photograph are the Bon Marche, which was the first occupant of the Mall; the luxurious Tacoma Mall Theatre (bottom center); Pacific National Bank of Washington's circular building; the Bon Marche Tire Center, directly across from the Bon and the six-story Tacoma Mall Office Building. What the Tacoma Mall enjoyed, and downtown shopping lacked, was an abundance of free parking and a climate controlled atmosphere. Access to the Mall was easy with several entrances and quick freeway travel time. The wooded area across the Mall on South 48th St. would eventually become Best Buy, a Pierce County Transit Center, and closer to Pine St., the Social Security office. Half-brothers Sugar Ray Seales (l) and Dale Grant (r) assume a typical boxing pose in this October, 1973, studio portrait. Tacoma was well represented at the 1972 Olympic games by Mr. Seales who would become the sole American boxing gold medal winner. His younger brother, Dale Grant, also was a notable local boxer who was named the US Amateur Boxer of the Year in '72 for his outstanding record. Mr. Seales was born in the Virgin Islands in 1952 while his father was stationed at an Army post there. He became involved in the Tacoma Boys Club in Tacoma after moving here in 1965 and was coached for many years by Joe Clough. Mr. Clough would resign as Mr. Seales' manager in May of 1973 after his first seven victories as a professional. Bill Dickson would then manage Mr. Seales. Photograph ordered by Larry Morris.
Marvin Boys, executive vice-president of the Tacoma Mall Corporation, addresses the overflowing crowd at ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the new addition to the popular shopping center on July 25, 1973. Shoppers were eager to sample the 20 new stores now open in the mall's west end expansion which included Jay Jacobs, Osborn & Ulland, the Lemon Tree, House of Fabrics, Tinder Box and Waldenbooks. Mr. Boys stated that the new stores would add about 4-5 million dollars to the Mall's annual income and about 8 million by 1978 when gross income should reach 100 million. Bridal portrait. The chapel at Charles Wright Academy was the site of the Teckla Ann Slikas-Graham Morley Hicks nuptials on May 19, 1973. The recent Willamette graduates were married in a double-ring ceremony by Rev. James W. Bertolin. The bride, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. John Slikas of Tacoma, was dressed in a silk jersey and wore a small cap with a cluster of fresh flowers. She carried a bouquet of roses, stephanotis and lily-of-the-valley. The groom is the son of Judge and Mrs. Loren D. Hicks of Salem, Oregon. The newlyweds will live in Portland where the groom is an attorney. (TNT 5-27-73, B-4)
Overhead look at construction workers on the job building the new St. Joseph Hospital. The men will soon be pouring concrete forms. The hospital, with its unusual curvilinear style, used 22,000 tons of concrete in its construction. The 14-story, 189-foot tower would be dedicated on December 15, 1974. Although Columbian Opticians had many retail locations in the area, it appears that the grinding of lenses was possibly done at one spot and the products then dispersed. Residents of the proposed "Nineteen Broadway North" luxury condominiums would have a similar view. May Day court - Annie Wright School. Although the school's name had changed from Seminary to School, traditions such as May Day still remained. The 1973 May Day Queen Lisa Bean and her royal court posed proudly for their formal portrait on May 12, 1973. Included were senior girls from Iran, Hong Kong and Japan. Close-up of an intense Dale Grant with clenched fists. 18-year-old Dale Grant, the half-brother of Olympic gold medalist Sugar Ray Seales, was also a product of the Tacoma boxing scene. Unlike his brother who was born in the Virgin Islands, Dale Grant was born in Seattle in 1955. Following in the footsteps of his older brother, he won the 1972 National AAU championship but in the 156-lb. division. He would also win the 1973 National Golden Gloves championship in that weight division; Sugar Ray Seales had won the 1972 National Golden Gloves championship in the 139-lb. division. Mr. Grant, a TCC student, would turn pro on October 5, 1973, and make his successful debut in Santa Rosa, California, on October 13th. Sugar Ray Seales, left, and half-brother Dale Grant, right, come from a Tacoma family of boxers; both have become champions in the boxing arena. In this 1973 photograph, Seales is a 1972 Olympic Gold Medalist and an unbeaten pro welterweight vying for the world championship. Seales would be the sole American gold medalist in boxing. Grant, an 18-year-old righthander, is just entering professional boxing. Grant was named U.S. Amateur Boxer of the Year for 1972 by the AAU and has a championship 290-18 record. 1973 Publicity photograph for the Dave Bunker Show. Bearded Dave Bunker, a Washington native, led his troupe of entertainers for many years; the group was a staple in Las Vegas clubs. Mr. Bunker was a talented musician and inventor of the Bunker Touch Guitar which was built with two necks. An unidentified woman tries out a girl's Schwinn bicycle, one of the many donations to be auctioned off during BASH's annual event held on April 27-28, 1973. About $200,000 worth of goods are going up on the block: including a $50,000 duplex being built in Twin Lakes, a 1930 Model A, a dune buggy, four totem poles and a school bus. This snapshot was taken at night either during the 1972 Christmas season or shortly after when the streets of downtown Tacoma still had their holiday decorations up. The vibrant red and gold tones of this lantern with its snowman and soldier figures helped to brighten the winter nights.
In September of 1973, this unidentified Columbian Opticians shop had a colorful display of fashionable glasses mounted on multi-colored mannikin heads. The heads, in striking hues of indigo, rose and brilliant yellows, were topped with contrasting feathers masquerading as hair. Five or more mannikin heads rested on several gold fringed tables. A Pacific Northwest Bell employee tentatively identified as Candy Young gives a hint that Easter is around the corner and with Easter, the arrival of the Easter Bunny. Dressed in a rabbit costume with "paws," flapping "ears," and two enormous "front teeth," she reclines atop a mountain of "eggs." A big carrot provides nourishment. Goods were being stored at BASH (Building a Scholastic Heritage) headquarters, 1130 Commerce St., as the group geared up for its annual auction to be held at the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse on April 27-28, 1973. Approximately $200,000 worth of donations would be ready to be snapped up by eager customers, including this antique Edison machine. An unidentified woman is pictured on March 20th testing out its sound. Some of the items, of course, could not fit inside a building - a school bus and a newly built Twin Lakes duplex, for example. Proceeds of the auction supported five private schools in the area, including Annie Wright School, Aquinas Academy, Bellarmine Prep., Charles Wright School and St. Leo's School. He would announce turning pro on October 5, 1973, with a bout scheduled eight days later in California. He would go on to defeat veteran boxer Dave Arrealino in an unanimous six-round decision. He went on to defeat veteran boxer Dave Arrealino in an unanimous six-round decision. Dale Grant began his boxing career at the Tacoma Boys Club in 1966.
