Do to shortages of materials and delays caused by the war, the Seattle-Tacoma Airport, 19 miles north of Tacoma at Bow Lake, took 6 1/2 years to build. Still under construction in November of 1948, it was dedicated on July 9, 1949. The airport served four airlines- Northwest, Western, Pan American and United. By 1951, it was the only debt free airport in America. The reinforced concrete terminal had underground parking and an open observation deck on the field side.
