The company was celebrating its 46th year in business and the gradual recovery from the Depression. The company began business in 1889 as a horse drawn moving company for any kind of commodities. By 1904, Griffin Fuel had moved to this location and focused in on the fuel business. In 1935, they delivered and sold fuel in the forms of oil, coal, wood and sawdust. (T. Times 12/10/1935, pg. 5)

ca. 1935. Griffin Fuel Company. Man pulling lever on coal chute to release coal into truck. These are automatic gravity bunkers filled with coal. The company was begun by Fred L. Griffin Sr. in 1889 as a horse drawn delivery company. It was called Griffin Transfer in the early days. By 1904, they moved to Commerce Street and concentrate solely on fuel deliveries. (T. This photograph from March 1932 shows four unidentified empoyees in one of the Piggly Wiggly grocery stores in Puyallup. This store was under the management of Mr. Pinckney. Going through a wooden turn-style, a shopper could find bargains such as Max-i-mum coffee at 37cents per lb. and apples at 63 cents a box.

Four people standing by door of log building with sign reading " Jay's Log Cabin, Dine & Dance" on the roof ridge and extending from the side of the structure. The two couples outside are possibly the proprieters. One man is dressed in a long apron, as if he has been or is planning to cook. The log cabin is located in what appears to be a rural location. Group includes a young couple to the left of the seated row dressed alike in slacks, white shirts and sweaters and a woman in the standing row wearing a "Andre's Market" brown paper bag as a hat.
