In October of 1949, a smiling Avonne Nelson stepped from her vehicle outside the Winthrop Hotel's Broadway entrance shielded from the fall showers by her chic crinkle nylon raincoat and the umbrella held by Walter Andrews, a uniformed bellman. One of the fashion highlights of 1949 was the increased development of nylon fabrics. They were used in many classifications of clothing because of their durability and easy care qualities. The only hindrance to the mass acceptance of nylon was its short supply. Mr. Andrew's uniform patch indicated that he was employed by Western Hotels Inc., which in 1947 entered into a long term lease with the Winthrop Hotel at 773 Broadway. The Bostwick Building is in the background. (T.N.T., 10/23/49, p. C-6; retro-fashion-history.com).
