Franklin Thompson, president of the College of Puget Sound, can be seen in front of the mantel, right of center. Bids for the three houses at 5201, 5213, 5219 South K Street that would be removed to make way for Mann Elementary School were to be received by the Tacoma School District by October 29, 1951. Mann Elementary and opened in 1953. This early venacular style one-story house with hip roof, full front porch, and wood foundation was built in 1906 by R.C. Oeder. Launching of "Southern Pacific" at J.M. Martinac. The 123 foot tuna clipper was built for Lu Brito (skipper) along with John Silva. She had a capacity of 270 tons and a crew of 15. She was equipped with a 800-hp Enterprise engine, two 150-hp 120 kw GM generating sets, one 60 kw GM generating set for auxiliaries at a cost of $400,000. She was also equipped with Sperry automatic power steering and an automatic pilot; Tacoma Range Company electric range; a Coolidge propeller, TCA radio, Intervox direction finder and a Submarine Signal fathometer. A Turner tow truck is lifting a big freighter on its towing rig. The freighter truck is pulling a trailer behind its regular load. Lois Elinor Holm and Arthur Louis Jewett were married January 26, 1952, in Immanuel Presbyterian Church. Mrs. David Curtis was matron of honor and wore a gold colored velveteen dress. Patricia Jo Holm, sister of the bride, Mrs. Robert Hansen, sister of the bridegroom, and Miss Joyce Anderson were the other attendants. They wore emerald green velveteen dresses and each carried a muff with her flowers pinned on it. An aerial view of the plant facility for Hooker Electrochemical Company located at 605 Alexander Avenue on the Tacoma tideflats. The Hylebos Waterway provided excellent accessibility with a company dock and a railroad spur running through the facility enhanced transportation even further. The Port of Tacoma sold an additional 20-acre site to Hooker Electrochemical in December 1951 for $56,400 according to George Osgood, manager of the Port. The property, including a 1,200-foot frontage on the Port-Industrial waterway, was to be used for further expansion of the chemical firm's Tacoma plant. (TNT, 12/16/1951, p.1)

National Auto Parts celebrated the grand opening their third auto parts and accessories store in and near Tacoma in early 1952. The firm had been established in 1938. National Auto Parts was one of the largest distributorships of automobile parts, accessories and rebuilt engines in the Northwest and carried a full line of original equipment parts. During the grand opening the store showed free movies of the 1951 Indianapolis race and a film containing "Colonel Lindbergh's Takeoff Flight to Paris" and others. (TNT, 1/5/1952, p.8)

Another machine, a large roller type machine, is used to strip bark from logs at the St. Regis Paper plant. At the end of 1951, St. Regis reached a point where it was able to supply from its own operations virtually all of the sulphate pulp requirements, both bleached and unbleached, of its kraft paper mills. St. Regis had been experimenting at its Tacoma mill in manufacturing kraft pulp from clean waste wood chips and in 1951 was making use of this material on a considerable scale in production.
