Pacific Lutheran College was first known as Pacific Lutheran Academy between 1898 and 1919, in 1920 they changed Academy to College. In 1944 PLC officially stated they intended to build a new gymnasium, but building was delayed until the end of World War II. The fourteen student members of the College of Puget Sound Choral Readers perform in recital in Jones Hall Auditorium. The group, under the direction of Martha Pearl Jones, performed a diversified program of ensemble verse readings. Members were Herb Stark, leader, Gloria Nelson, assistant leader, Doug Cullen, Ellen Davenport, Mary Kincheloe, Helen Pearson, Kaye Klopfenstein, Mel Gidley, William Gianelli, Dale Lee, David Stell, Fern McCullough, Claudia Zediker and Homer Johnson. The exterior of "Old Main" at Pacific Lutheran College (later University) has been cleaned of ivy in 1950. In other years the administration building was covered thickly with ivy. Pacific Lutheran University was founded in 1890 by a group of mostly Norwegian Lutherans from the Puget Sound area. They were led by the Reverend Bjug Harstad, who became PLU's first president. Although founded as a university, the institution functioned primarily as an academy until 1918, when it closed for two years. It reopened as the two-year Pacific Lutheran College, after merging with Collumbia College, previously located in Everett. Spokane College merged with PLC in 1929. Four-year baccalaureate degrees were first offered in education in 1939 and in the liberal arts in 1941. TPL-9332

Professor Gunnar J. Malmin, Director of Music at Pacific Lutheran College and well known musician, conductor and composer. He was born April 9, 1903 in Thompson, Iowa. He studied music at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, at the famed St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. and the University of Michigan. He was an active member of the Lutheran Church and the Norwegian community. His career was based around those things most precious to him, singing, teaching and his faith. Malmin was married twice, to fellow musician and composer Dorothy, who died in 1986, and later to Berna Holland Olson, who died in 1999. Malmin died July 23, 2000 at the age of 97 of natural causes. He was survived by four children, Olaf, Jon, Ann and David and six grandchildren. (TNT 8-11-2000)

Paying little heed to the lovely campus beyond the large view windows, these Pacific Lutheran University students are hard at work on January 16, 1963, studying at the school library. Long tables provided plenty of room for students to spread out their books and other materials.

This smiling group of Pacific Lutheran University students show the happiness of the annual May Festival. Under the direction of Mrs. Rhoda Young, a whole year of dedicated practice would culminate in the May, 1963, two-night performance of the folk dance festival. Not only were dances from the Scandinavian countries represented, but also those thousands of miles away, from the Philippines. (1963 Saga yearbook, p. 98-99)

ca. 1955. Students enjoy tasty meals at one of the dining halls on the Pacific Lutheran College campus in 1955, while lines of people wait to be seated. This may have been taken roughly around Thanksgiving, as trays are filled with plates of turkey, mashed potato, peas, and pumpkin pie. The dining hall appears to be very large with bright overhead lights and plenty of windows. The new dining hall seats 600 persons. Everything is new, including furniture, dishes, silverware, and even trays. Students who board at P.L.C. eat very well on $1.33 a day covering three meals. Professor Gunnar Malmin, Director of Pacific Lutheran College's Choir of the West, stands at the base of the cross composed of choir members in January of 1956. The choir was taking its annual two-week tour through the Pacific Coast states of Washington, Oregon and California where it presented a sacred music-only program. It appeared before many civic organizations and church groups. Besides the tour, the choir also appeared on many radio broadcasts and gave a concert, for the first time, at the state prison. Pacific Lutheran College's May Festival. Eight couples perform a folk dance. The entertainment included a demonstration of folk art from Lithuania, Sweden, Russia, Germany, Spain and the U.S. The women are dressed in skirts with contrasting ribboned stripes at the bottom, short vests, white blouses and flower chains in their hair with cascading ribbons. Delighted Pacific Lutheran College co-eds applaud the selection of freshman Nadine Bruins of Arnegard, North Dakota, as the Lucia Bride on December 12, 1958. She has her eyes closed as the traditional red sash is wound around her waist. Tammara Oman (L) and Solveig Leraas (R) were selected as her attendants. The Festival of Santa Lucia is a very old Swedish custom, generally held the 13th of December, which features the eldest daughter of each household approaching her sleeping parents dressed in a long white gown with a red sash and wearing a crown of lingonberry leaves in which are set seven lighted candles. She supposedly represents the white-clad maiden, wearing a crown of burning candles, who brought food to starving Swedish villagers. Pacific Lutheran, like many other schools with large Scandinavian populations, celebrated this festival annually with the selection of a lovely Lucia Bride. Too cool for swimming now that it is November, but Pacific Lutheran College students can still enjoy the presence of the new outdoor swimming pool. The pool was presented to P.L.C. students by President and Mrs. S.C. Eastvold on May 28, 1958. The Eastvolds were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary and their 15th anniversary at P.L.C. The swimming pool is adjacent to three women's dorms. It is 20 feet wide, 40 feet long, and nine feet deep at the diving end. Its heating system is powered by propane gas and the pool has a chlorinating system with water changes every 6-8 hours. The celebration would be highlighted by gay spring music, colorful folk art and dancing and the coronation of the May Queen. Over 2,000 people attended the celebration. ca. 1955. The lovely Miss Marion Gabrielson of Eugene, Oregon, will be crowned 1955 May Queen at Pacific Lutheran College. Her coronation would take place during a program on May 4, 1955, in the college gym. She was a senior nursing education student. She poses here on the campus grounds in front of what is probably the Science Hall. She is dressed formally in an evening gown and holds a bouquet of spring daffodils and forsythia. ca. 1955. An exterior view of the Student Union Building at Pacific Lutheran College. This building was constructed in 1947 on the foundation of the gym that was destroyed by fire in 1946. It was designed by Lea, Pearson and Richards, Architects. During its use as the Student Union, it served as the center of student social and extra curricular activities. It contained a bookstore, coffee shop, recreation room, student lounge, auditorium, and stage. It was replaced in 1955-56 by a larger and more modern Student Union and this structure was converted to classrooms.

The Concert Chorus at Pacific Lutheran College, posed in the Music Building. The students are attired formally, with the girls wearing evening gowns and the boys in tuxedos. The 93 voice chorus was under the direction of R. Byard Fritts (seated.) The choir performed throughout the year, its productions enhanced by the special effects of staging, drama and costuming. A class in "Primary Methods" was taught by Mrs. Hayner during the 1922 summer session at the College of Puget Sound. There were several different classes in the Religious Education department being held at the college, then located at 602 No. Sprague Ave. The small class posed on the steps of the school on August 2, 1922. This view of the College of Puget Sound campus was taken on a lovely spring day in 1931. By this time the school had been at its North Warner address for seven years. The major buildings on campus were constructed of brick and resembled those built in Tudor style. G67.1-003

ca. 1901. Tacoma Business College at the corner of South 9th and Tacoma Avenue South circa 1901. The business college occupied the top floor(s) of the Lucerne Block which was later renamed the Midtown Bldg and the Hess Bldg. The school instructed its students in shorthand, bookkeeping, typewriting, commercial law and other business subjects. It had previously been located in the 1200 block of Tacoma Ave. So. before moving to the Lucerne Block. The Bennett New & Second Hand Furniture store (at 901 Tacoma Ave. So.) occupied part of the first floor. It was owned by Thomas Bennett and sold new and second hand furniture, stoves and carpets. Frank P. Fentress's Bicycles & Bicycle Sundries firm (at 903 Tacoma Ave. So.) was adjacent to Thomas Bennett's establishment.
