The annual archery tournament was held at the College of Puget Sound May 21,23 & 25, 1934. Contestants shot 12 arrows apiece from 30, 40 & 50 yard distances. Dr. Edward H. Todd, College of Puget Sound president, points out a spot on the globe to his wife Florence in this March, 1936, photograph. The Todds resided near the school at 1604 No. Alder. Dr. Todd was president at C.P.S. for 29 years before being succeeded by Dr. R. Franklin Thompson. He was instrumental in raising funds for the relocation of the school to the No. 15th & Warner present address.

ca. 1926. Beutel Business College. Simulated tellers wickets, adding machines , stools. Beutel, founded in 1887, was the oldest commercial school in Tacoma. It offered classes in accounting, typing, shorthand, and other subjects needed to find placement in the business world. (filed with Argentum)

A group of unidentified former Vashon College students gathered on August 7, 1938 beside an unidentified wooden building for a school reunion photograph. The Burton Garage and Shell Station and a church steeple are in background. The community of Burton grew up around the college that was founded there in 1892. The school provided a co-educational, Christian environment for study, without all the distractions of city life. It closed in 1912 when the main building burned to the ground and it never reopened.

Library Building at Pacific Lutheran College, now Xavier Hall. Building designed by Tacoma Architect Emanuel J. Bresemann, firm of Heath, Gove and Bell, in 1937. The college broke ground on the building on May 1, 1937 and it was dedicated two years later. (T.Times, 5/2/1939, p. 4)

Beginning of the whisker growing contest at the College of Puget Sound. Over 50 young men had signed up for the two week "Whisker Derby," with the coronation of the winner coinciding with Homecoming on October 26, 1939. Whisker styles were supposed to be in keeping with those popular 48 years prior, when the first class graduated from CPS. ca. 1922. This is Harstad Hall, familarly known as "Old Main," in a photograph taken circa 1922. "Old Main" was the first building on the Pacific Lutheran College (later University) campus located at 12180 Park Ave. So., Parkland. Its cornerstone was laid in October of 1891. The building was renamed for the school's first president, Rev. Bjug Harstad, in 1960. It had a myriad of uses over the years including classrooms, administration offices, chapel, library, dining hall and dormitories. G40.1-142, TPL-474, BU-12762

How to Teach Religion was one of the classes taught at the College of Puget Sound's summer session in 1922. Members of Professor Miller's class posed on August 2nd on the steps of the main building. The school had been established in 1888 by the Methodist Episcopal Church. G67.1-016

The young men and women representing the 201-member freshman class of the College of Puget Sound posed for a group portrait on campus grounds on September 16, 1927. Despite the large number "30" chalked on the boardwalk, this would be the Class of '31. By 1927 the private school had been settled into their new campus at 15th & North Warner for three years. Taking a well-deserved breather is the band from the College of Puget Sound as they rest aboard an enormous log during the school's 1928 homecoming parade. Cooney Transfer & Storage has provided the means to haul the band - and log - for the November 3rd event. They have stopped on Broadway to be photographed by the Boland Studios. The homecoming parade helped to advertise the University of Washington-College of Puget Sound football game played that afternoon. Elevated view of the College of Puget Sound campus taken during the Christmas holidays in 1929. The large three-story brick building in the center is the Science Hall, completed in 1927, and considered to be one of the finest science buildings in the Pacific Northwest at the time. It was designed by Sutton, Whitney & Dugan, architects, who had previously designed the Main building (Jones Hall) and the gymnasium. Later this building would be named Howarth Hall. BU-13,595

On February 12, 1924, the concrete work by contractors J.E. Bonnell & Sons on Jones Hall, the first building to be constructed on the new College of Puget Sound campus, was almost complete. The red tile roof was scheduled to be done next. The building was designed by the architecture firm of Sutton, Whitney & Dugan, as was the entire original campus. The school was patterned after the English educational institution of Cambridge. When completed, Jones Hall would represent an investment of $300,000. It was built completely of reinforced concrete with brick veneer, making the building fireproof. It was scheduled to be finished in early summer, in time for the college to transfer from 602 No. Sprague (now the site of Jason Lee) to this location and open for classes in the fall. Ladies of the Splinter. These students, freshmen and sophomores at the College of Puget Sound, were members of the Ladies of the Splinter in 1925. They tried to support all activities of the school with much pep and spirit. Their aim was to serve and support the school in all endeavors. Their male counterpart was the honorary fraternity of freshman and sophomore boys called the Knights of the Log. G67.1-009
