Grain elevator, Port of Tacoma, George Osgood. A $500,000 bond issue was authorized in 1930 to provide funds for what became one of the major wheat handling terminals on the Pacific Coast. A subsequent addition to the grain elevator in 1947 brought the capacity to 1.1 million bushels. Another 500,000 addition was added in 1951. The unit was equipped with 3 receiving legs having a capacity of 100 cars per day and 2 shipping legs providing ship delivery at a maximum rate of 30,000 bushels an hour. College of Puget Sound. Three male college students, members of the Intercollegiate Knight National Service Fraternity, are cleaning an attic. One of them is dismanteling what looks like a bed frame, and the other two are mopping the floor. Old furniture, roll-up blinds and other items are still piled up around them. The walls are finished in wooden planks. This group participated in the year-round activities of the college and undertook two major spring projects: remodeling the out-dated bulletin boards at Jones Hall and the procurement of a chapter room. Newly repainted jeep, Buck & Sons, Dal Buckhalter. Buck & Sons repainted jeep has a combined covered cab and back with flat sides and flat doors. The cab door shown is painted with company information. Further back it has Ford tractor and Dearborn Farm Equipment insignia and Owner's Service painted on it. The company not only sold Ford and Ferguson tractors, they also manufactured and repaired farm machinery. The jeep is parked in front of Buck & Sons facilities.

Blanket window at Weisfield's Commerce Street side, Virginia Knowland, Simmons Blanket. Weisfield and Goldberg's store had two entrances, 924 Commerce Street and 925 Broadway. The window display includes a bedroom suite including a vanity with mirror and stool, bed and bedside table and dresser. The emphasis is on the Simmons Electronic Blanket, however. The blanket was said to keep an even temperature even if the room temperature changed.

The unidentified staff of the Oven Sweet Bake Shop, 8221 So. Tacoma Way, Lakewood, stand behind display cases containing fresh-baked pies, cookies, doughnuts, rolls and heart-shaped cakes. The bakery opened for business in February of 1948. The heart-shaped floral stand at the back of the shop has a ribbon wishing, "Success". The owner of the bakery may have been Mr. Filigini. The bakery only remained in business for about one year.

Showroom at City Motor Company, Oldsmobile, Anson Hart. The new 1948 model Oldsmobile offered many new developments: a streamlined body design with increased front and rear visibility with curved glass, wider seats, more luxurious upholstery and interior trim. Powered by a 115 hp, 8-cylinder engine, this automobile was known as the "Futuramic" series "98" Oldsmobile. (T.Times, 2/16/1948, p.8) TPL-1653

Showroom at City Motor Company, Oldsmobile, Anson Hart. A large, artificial cake with artificial candles stands next to the drapery covered frame announcing the "Futuramic" Oldsmobile. The "Futuramic" series of "98" Oldsmobiles was the top of the line for Oldsmobile. The "Dynamic" was for medium price buyers. General Motors' hydra-matic drive, providing automatic shifting in all forward speeds, hydraulic controls for raising and lowering the windows and adjusting the position of the front seat were optional equipment throughout the Oldsmobile line. Showroom at City Motor Company, Oldsmobile, Anson Hart. An 1898 automobile is included in the display of the new 1948 Oldsmobiles, perhaps a way of introducing the Oldsmobile "98" class of automobiles. Oldsmobile was America's oldest motor car manufacturer with over five decades of design and construction development. The "98"'s were the upper tier of the Oldsmobile line. They carried a newly designed high-compression head. All the 1948 models were equipped with coil springs at all 4 wheels, rigid X-member reinforced frame, double-action hydraulic shock absorbers, proven knee-action front wheel units, four-way stabilization to prevent side sway at high speeds and dual-control center steering. Forty Women at Masonic Temple, Daughters of the Nile, Mrs. Shotwell. These women are wearing a variety of costumes. In the very front five women are dressed as belly dancers with sheer skirts, midriff exposed and egyptian head pieces. Women in the middle are wearing white cossack-style costumes with blouson pants, cumberbund and high-necked, long, full sleeved blouses. They also wear matching head pieces.The women around the edges and back row are wearing evening gowns.

Forty Women at Masonic Temple, Daughters of the Nile, Mrs. Shotwell. The Zora Temple No. 5, Daughters of the Nile, were honored by the official visit of the supreme queen, Mrs. Ray Hoble of Rockford, Illinois. The decorating committee chose an oriental theme. The program included an exhibition drill by the Egyptian patrol and the dancing girls presented an Egyptian number. These women are wearing a variety of costumes and stand on the stage at the Masonic Temple. The formation of the Daughters of the Nile originated in the home of Mrs. Mable R. Krows, Seattle, Washington. She and a number of other Shriners' wives on February 20, 1913, formed the Ladies of the Nile Club. Several shots of illuminated neon signs. Batsford, Constantine & Gerdner, Mr. Haverly. This neon sign spells out, "Olympia, It's the Water." Olympia Brewing Co. was located in Tumwater, Washington, just south of Olympia. Located at the southernmost tip of Puget Sound, by the waterfall on the Deschutes River, the brewery was proud of their good water. Tumwater is an Indian name that means "strong water," or "falling water." The brewery was built by Leopold F. Schmidt. The battle of the beers between Olympia and Rainier beer began early and lasted through the advertising schemes where wild Rainiers took on the Artesians during the 1980s. TPL-9327

Exterior of house at present state, Wollander Far West Homes, W.A. Wollander. Site construction of this prefabricated home was begun January 22, 1948 (see Richard's collection series #D31,563). The windows, doors and roof have been installed. The chimney is complete. Frames are in place for a concrete front step. The landscaping has not been finished.

When this photograph was taken in February of 1948, the venerable Bowes Building, 100 So. 9th St., was home to Tacoma Savings and Loan, one of the pioneer financial institutions on the Pacific Coast. The company had purchased the building in 1920 and added their neon sign above the entrance in 1941. The Bowes Building was designed by the architectural firm of Heath & Twichell and built of white Vermont marble. It was named after its developer Major Edward J. Bowes, who achieved national fame for his "Amateur Hour" radio program. It is on the City, State and National Registry of Historic Buildings. Photo ordered by William D. Tomatoes are moved along a conveyor system and packed into card board trays and then wrapped in celophane ready to be placed in wooden shipping crates. Building and pipe yard, American Plumbing, George Hill. The exterior of the American Plumbing and Steam Supply Company. The four-story brick building was built in 1911. Darmer and Cutting were the architects and the Cornell Brothers were the contractors. Walsh and Gardner Plumbing Company was the first owner. American Plumbing and Supply moved to this location in 1921 from its earlier location at 1750 Pacific Avenue. TPL-8831

Building and pipe yard, American Plumbing, George Hill. The exterior of the American Plumbing and Steam Supply Company. The American Plumbing and Steam Supply Company was founded in 1907. H.K. Munroe was president of this wholesale plumbing, heating and mill supplies company. This building later became one of the University of Washington, Tacoma campus, classroom buildings (UW-T).

Casket closed showing flowers, also at Tacoma Cemetery, Violet Davies. James D. Davies passed away in Tacoma at age 82 on March 12, 1948. He was born in Swansea, South Wales, November 8, 1865. He came to the United States in 1887, cast his first vote in the Washington Territory in 1888. He and Mary Thomas were married in 1897. His casket was surrounded by flowers at the Buckley King Funeral Home. (TNT, 3/12/1948, p.22)
