Two console models, one in a dark wood cabinet and one in light wood, are seen on the left. Smaller players flank an easy chair; and portable players and radios are lined up on shelves. Westinghouse referred to the popularity of radio thrillers aired at that time in their advertisements for their radios, "It's a crime not to hear it" and "Listen to the evidence, your ear will prove it."

The Assembly of God Church at 1121 So. G St. (now Altheimer St.) is filled with families attending a youth rally. The Tacoma church was founded in 1918 by Rev. Frank Gray. Today, as First Assembly of God Life Center at 1717 So. Union Ave., it has one of the largest congregations in Tacoma. The building in this photograph was designed by Silas E. Nelsen, architect, and dedicated in 1926. It is now the Altheimer Memorial Church of God in Christ. TPL-6397

This garbage truck has sides that can be lowered for adding new materials and the back doors open wide when the truck is ready to lift and dump the load.

Cecil B. DeMille's "King of Kings" was presented at the Roxy (Pantages) Theater March 22 - 26, 1948. Admission was free as sponsored by the Tacoma Council of Churches. The theater was nearly filled for the showing of the film when this photograph was taken on the 26th. The Pantages was built as a vaudeville theater in 1917. Motion pictures replaced vaudeville shows and the name was changed to the RKO Orpheum in 1930 and changed again in 1932 when the new Roxy opened. Filipino-Americans from the Puget Sound area honored Pedro G. Ramirez, newly appointed consul for the Republic of the Philippines, at a banquet held in Swiss Hall. Appointed by President Manuel Roxas, Ramirez opened an office in Seattle and is the first Filipino diplomatic representative to maintain an office in the Pacific Northwest. The dinner and dance was sponsored by the Filipino-American Council of Puget Sound. (TNT, 3/27/1948, p. 10).

Two flatcars with boilers, Birchfield Boiler. Giant boilers wait on flatcars for shipment to Southern California. The largest will be installed in the new building of the General Petroleum Corp. of Los Angeles.The Birchfield Boiler facilities can be seen in the background. The plant was also completing an order for 25 large pressure tanks complete with copper heating coils for the US Army in addition to approximately 400 tank heaters for the army. New West Coast Grocery Company building at Tacoma, DFPA, Mrs. Leik. Ordered by Douglas Fir Plywood Association, the exterior of this building shows the use of plywood in concrete construction. The walls were built using plywood and structural lumber as molds with iron rebar to strengthen the poured concrete. Openings were left for windows to be installed.

Medical Arts Building from Saint Helens Avenue, Holroyd Company, Jim Holroyd. The exteriors of the street front shops have been modernized. The Custom Boot Shop's and Raitano's Jewelry's exteriors now feature cement block - probably produced by the Holroyd Company. The exteriors of Columbian Optical, Braley's Inc. Drugs, and further up the street are decorated with dark squares of stone or tile.

A man in the clothing storage area of Supreme Fur Storage is evaluating the condition of one of the fur coats hung on racks. Fur stoles are also shown. The company advertised steel and concrete vaults, new scientific equipment, fumigation and demothing, refrigeration and expert craftsmanship. Scottish Rite reunion, Mr. Farnsworth. Scottish Rite bodies of Freemasonry in the Tacoma district held their 84th semi-annual reunion the week of May 16, 1948, and dedicated it to the memory of the late Felix Robinson, 33rd degree, in appreciation for his 27 years of activity in the Masonic order. Over 100 petitioners were expected to form the reunion class for the ritualistic induction. The Scottish Rite of the Freemasons appears to have been organized in the United States in 1801. It offers higher Degrees to a Master Mason (the third and highest of the traditional degrees, and as far as he can go in his Blue Lodge). The Scottish Rite is open to Jews and others. Richfield Gas Company opened a service station at this location in 1928. Kress Retail Drive Inn was located here in 1938, and Five Point Inn from 1945 through 1947. The building takes advantage of the triangular property it sits on at the intersection of Division and Tacoma Avenue North.

Two views of candy packing machine at Brown & Haley plant, Fred Todd Company, Los Angeles, California. Women are seen in the candy factory packing Olympia Mints. The mints were one ounce and advertised as, "a giant chocolate mint, soft, creamy-cool center, rich dark chocolate coating - the most popular mint bar in the West". The women each wear coverings over their hair and aprons. After the end of the war Brown & Haley began making every kind of candy imaginable: peppermint sticks, lemon drops, gum drops, taffy chews, chocolate bars, fudges and caramels. After 1972 they began to specialize in three basic product lines: Almond Roca, Mountain Bars and boxed chocolates. As of 1989 Brown & Haley was the largest exporter of candy in America. Installation of officers, White Shrine Masonic Temple, studio spec. The White Shrine of Jerusalem was founded as a Christian auxiliary to Freemasons in the United States. There were 69,000 members in 1995. Until 1953 members of the White Shrine of Jerusalem were required to be members of the Eastern Star. The original White Shrine of Jerusalem was founded by Charles D. Magee in Chicago on October 23, 1894. Membership is open to Master Masons as well as their wives, mothers, daughters, widows, and sisters.
