The bottles pass in front of a lighted panel and the man is able to detect any flaws in the bottle, the filling, or the cap. In 1946 Heidelberg was brought back on the market in long-neck, 12 oz. brown bottles. In 1947, when machinery became more readily available, the brewery converted to stubby containers.

Old Timers nite at Elks Club, Times, Buzz. All members of the Elks with 25 years or more of service were honored at a reunion at the Elks Temple January 26, 1949. The Tacoma Lodge received its charter from the grand lodge in 1890. Thirty-two of the men who were honored at the event have posed in front of the stage. Names are listed in the newspaper. Mrs. Emma Love, Masonic Temple, at request of Mrs. Love. Mrs. Herbert F. Love was one of the past Queens of Zora Temple No. 5. She and the other past queens assisted during the ceremonial dinner where the Zora Temple honored Supreme Queen Mattie E. Watson from Phoenix, Arizona, at the Masonic Temple. Mrs. Love stands in front of chairs draped with oriental rugs with sparkling fabric hung decoratively behind. The S.H. Kress & Co. store in Tacoma, 934 Broadway, advertised fresh, home-made, butter cream fudge for 30 cents per one-half pound for Valentines Day 1949. In their front window, heart shapes and stripes were made of suckers on a continuous tape. Several large pieces of fudge spelled out the name "Kress," and other candies were made into bouquets at the top and near the edges of the display. S. H. Kress closed their store on Broadway in 1972. Tacoma Drug Company, interior and exterior of new offices, Tacoma Drug Co., Fred Osmers. The interior of the offices of the wholesale drug company. A view from the back of the common office area shows the entry to the building on one of the exterior corners. The entry way has been walled with glass-block to let available light into the offices. Conduits in the floor made it possible to install power, telephone, or inter-communication outlets at 30 inch intervals. (TNT, 2/15/1949, p.A-14)

This photograph of the Tacoma Drug Company warehouse at 1815 East D Street on Tacoma's tideflats was taken in February of 1949 shortly after the warehouse was completed; the vast area is crowded with a multitude of tables and boxes, including Bayer and Bromo Seltzer products. The Tacoma Drug Company was founded in 1925 by Chis F. Osmers. By 1949 the company had become one of the largest distributors of pharmaceutical products on the Pacific Coast. Their warehouse incorporated the latest technology so that orders could be filled quickly and efficiently. In 1951, under the corporate leadership of Fred C. Osmers, Tacoma Drug became part of the Northwest Drug Company; in 1984 the company was sold to Pay n' Save.

See A37889-3 for a view of the building after remodeling. The company had been founded by Herbert Brown. Brown's had been located at 9102 South Steilacoom Boulevard until 1937 when it was moved to 4734 South Tacoma Way. Herbert Brown's son, Wilfred (Bill) was now co-owner and manager of the shop. John H. "Big John" Anderson (right) was the newly selected Exalted Ruler of the Tacoma Elks Lodge for 1949-1950. He is pictured above accepting the gravel from his predecessor, Cecil Walrath, on April 5, 1949. Mr. Anderson, a well known Tacoma building contractor, was installed in impressive ceremonies headed by Edwin J. Anderson, past president for the State Elks Association. John Anderson had a bright career ahead of him: he was elected mayor of Tacoma twice and served as school board president three times. An avid sportsman and noted civic leader, Mr. Anderson passed away in November of 1974. (TNT 4/5/49, p. 20-article; TNT 4-7-49, C-7).

Birchfield Boiler company were builders of the famous "Birchfield Boiler", they also specialized in building tanks, hot water heaters, pipes, stacks and various types of vessels. Birchfield Boiler, Inc. was located on 2503 East 11th Street in Tacoma's tideflats area; the plant was on the Port Industrial Waterway, now known as the Blair Waterway. View of Birchfield Boiler built "Situk", a 48 foot by 16 foot by 28 inch power scow built for Libby McNeill and Libby.

Eight people were killed as a result of the April 13, 1949 earthquake, one little boy from Lowell School in Tacoma was among the eight victims. A Tacoma road near East 11th Street and Alexander Avenue was severely cracked; for the most part people considered themselves fairly lucky. This is a bull, possibly a breeding bull, belonging to well-known cattleman Roy Tower of Everett. Mr. Tower and another of his cattle made an appearance in the April 8, 1949 edition of the News Tribune. His pet cow, "Saffo," was only two feet tall and weighed in at 90 pounds. Some fellow cattlemen believed she was a cross between a cow and a midget deer although Snohomish County Agricultural Extension Agent Arnold Z. Smith believed "Saffo" was a small normal cow. This year's Daffodil Festival was being called "the most successful of all daffodil celebrations". Red Cross Motor Service department transported volunteer nurses and Gray Ladies to various hospitals and medical centers throughout Pierce County. This program also transported patients to their medical appointments, sightseeing trips and errands.
