Morris Jaffe-Edith Brodsky held their wedding and wedding reception at the Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel Winthrop on November 3, 1946. Eleven waitresses, a chef and kitchen manager stand behind the heavily laden banquet serving table. The bride was the daughter of Phillip and Anne Brodsky. The groom was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Jaffe of Seattle. The bride's cake, not shown, was surrounded by 100 gardenias and a sprinkling of silver sequins. (T.Times, 11/6/1946, p.8)

Surrender Day and parade, August 14 and 15, 1945. . People throw confetti from the upper floors of the downtown buildings celebrating the end of World War II.

After President Truman's announcement on August 14, 1945 that Japan had surrendered, the greatest mass celebration in Tacoma history took place on the downtown streets. People poured out of offices into the streets to celebrate the end of the war in the Pacific. Bottles appeared to toast the victory, but would not be replenished as the liquor stores also closed for the victory holiday. Maids and matrons of all ages bestowed "Victory kisses" on the willing servicemen to express their thanks. (TNT 8/15-16, 1945, pg. 1)

Americans listened intently to radios on August 14, 1945, for word that the Japanese had surrendered. The message came at 4 p.m. on the West Coast, "The war is over!" Emotions ran high--people yelled; horns honked; bits of paper poured down from business buildings; downtown streets were jammed with cars and sidewalks were crowded with jubilant people. The excitement continued the following day with a Surrender Day parade on Pacific Avenue. The marching soldiers are one of the four platoons from Fort Lewis. The North West Junior Livestock Show was held in Auburn, Washington on April 5, 1946. Carsten's Packing Co. sold a total of 69 steers, 37 hogs and 8 lambs. Many Tacoma restaurants and clubs attended the show and placed orders, in order to serve their customers award winning meat. Rhodes provided the spring and summer fashions and helped the Shipmates' Club with planning their annual style show in April of 1946. These ladies are wearing the latest in spring fashions, skirts just below the knee with matching midriff tops, the perfect outfits for yacht trips (T. Times, 4/13/46, p. 2).

Nine members of the Shipmates modeled a variety of bathing suits for the annual Shipmates' Tea and Style Show held in April of 1946 at the Tacoma Yacht Club. For the style show, the Rhodes Sports Shop provided a selection of outdoor clothes suitable for sailing Puget Sound and Canadian waters. The bathing suit models are standing in front of the "Santa Rosa" owned by Jewell and Edna Lerum; Edna was a club member. Tacoma Yacht Club member Eva Seymour has been tentatively identified as posing fourth from the right. She and husband August Seymour were owners of the "April Ann" which was moored at the Club. (T. Elks Christmas Dance Committee was making arrangements for their annual dance. The committee's Chairman was Lowell and Evelyn Wasser, they were in charge of the event. The Elks would be collecting Christmas gifts for needy children between the ages of one and 14 years. The Elks were planning to distribute 600 gifts to children during the holiday season. Dance committee members are wrapping gifts and deciding on the dance decorations (T. Times, 12/5/47, p. 15).

Renamed Veterans Day in 1953, November 11 was first proclaimed as Armistice Day in 1919 to commemorate the end of World War I. That year, on November 13, John Philip Sousa's band played in the Washington National Guard Armory in Tacoma and President Woodrow Wilson spoke there two months earlier. In 1947, a Military Ball was held on Armistice Day at the Armory, where more than 1,500 people were expected to attend. The presentation of colors to the local reserve units of the Army and Army Air Corps highlighted the evening. Army and Navy dignitaries and prominent civilian guests attended the event. George Hunt Weyerhaeuser had his brother Philip as his best man for his July 10, 1948 wedding. The couple was married at 5:00 P.M.in a ceremony officiated by Reverend Harold B. Long. The reception was held in the Pavilion and was immediately following the marriage ceremony. The Tacoma Times on their front page reported on the wedding of James H. Louie and Virginia Lew Wing who were married by Rev. Walter Macoskey on August 5, 1948 at First Baptist Church in front of 125 guests. This was the first wedding ceremony officiated for a Chinese-American couple at First Baptist Church. Virginia had been a member of the church since childhood. James is a graduate of University of Washington and received his masters degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Virginia graduated from Stadium High School and is a graduate of St. Joseph Hospital, School of Nursing. Marian Andahl - Arnold Slater wedding. Marian Josephine Andahl and Arnold Clyde Slater were married in front of 400 guests on August 14, 1948. These are believed to be the bride's attendants at the altar of Our Savior's Lutheran Church featuring the maid of honor, four bridesmaids, flower girl and candlelighters. Maid of honor Grace Cuthbert wore a gown of pale blue taffeta and carried delphiniums in crescent shape. Bridesmaids Edna Andahl, Pat Johnson, Lois Buck and Louise Sylstad were in dusty rose taffeta gowns and carried bouquets of rubrum lilies. Candlelighters, in yellow taffeta, were Delores Burns and Mrs. Andres Holt, Jr. Dressed in blue taffeta was Linda Peterson, flower girl. Marian Slater was a graduate of Stadium High School while her new husband Arnold graduated from Lincoln High School and was a Washington State College student at the time of their wedding. Chaplain Howard Rusthoi of Los Angeles, California brought his United Full Gospel City-Wide Revival to Tacoma for two weeks in August of 1948. His giant tent cathedral was set up at South 14th and Trafton. Chaplain Rusthoi had served for twenty years in the ministry including 28 months with the U.S. Army Air Corps. His services were broadcast nightly on KTBI radio. His revival had the local help and support of eleven churches and their pastors. Appearing with Chaplain Rusthoi were Joseph Waugh, a scotch tenor, and Fred Henry, who with billed as the "Blind Pianist". (T. Times, 8/7/48, p. 3).

Dorothy Ann Schneider-Glastetter. Dorothy Ann Schneider and Herman Bernard Glastetter were married September 18, 1948, at St. Patrick's Catholic church. Father McGreil performed the ceremony before 200 guests. Dorothy is shown wearing her wedding gown of ivory satin with a round neckline and tight girdle of crystal beads and pearls. The skirt flowed into a long train. She wears a finger tip veil of illusion caught with a tiara of pearls and is holding her bouquet of stepanotis and orchids. (T.Times, 9/18/1948, p.10)

Lincoln High School's Junior-Senior prom was held in the school's gymnasium on January 21, 1949 with Keith Rader and John Hreha as the event's chairmen. The theme for the evening was "Top Hat Twirl" and the gym was decorated with a top hat, cane, white gloves and a New York City skyline. A local orchestra played for the students.
