College of Puget Sound graduation. The College of Puget Sound held their 59th commencement exercises at Jones Hall, May 26, 1947. Two honorary degrees were given this year. The Doctor of Divinity was conferred upon William Bowman who was recently named superintendent of the Vancouver area of the Methodist Church. The Doctor of Human Letters was conferred upon Charles A. Laying of Cornerstone at Pacific Lutheran College. Ceremonies were held to lay the cornerstone June 10, 1947, at Pacific Lutheran College for a new, three-story student union building. Dr. C.S. On April 24, 1945, at Washington School, 3701 No. 27th St., Patsy Phillips (left) and Judy McMillan stood at attention while Ronnie Schermerhorn blew a salute on his trumpet for the World Security Conference to be held in San Francisco. Campfire Girls and Blue Birds throughout the nation took part in identical ceremonies designed to make the scouts think about what they most desired for the world and determine the part they could play to make those desires come true.The World Security Conference was one of the international meetings that led to the formation of the United Nations. C.P.S. Summer Ministers Class. The University of Puget Sound, known as the College of Puget Sound from 1914-1959, was established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1888. Its first location was in a rented building at 2102 So. I St. Its first permanent location was 602 No. Sprague Ave. The College first opened at 1500 No. Warner St. in September 1924.

Dissension was in the air on April 17, 1946, when approximately 50 students from Robert Gray Jr. High took to the streets to protest what they termed the "firing" of physical education teacher Victor Kovack by Principal Carroll A. Payne. The protest continued for 3 days, gathering up to 150 students demanding the removal of Principal Payne. When police forced the picketers from in front of the building, they paraded through the streets of South Tacoma. Kovack and Principal Payne had disagreed over the use of corporal punishment at the school, with Kovack opposing it. Students were advised that Mr. Kovack had been transferred, not fired, by the school district. After an investigation by the school board into the alleged physical punishments, Principal Payne was exonerated, but the regulations concerning corporal punishment in the schools were more clearly defined and published. Mr. Lennard Anderson, director of music at Central School, was photographed reviewing some of the arrangements to be performed for students at the February 18, 1948 concert by the Pacific Northwest Symphony Orchestra. He was playing with his right hand and pointing at the music with his left hand for a group of fifth grade students at the school. The students were, L-R, Jean Needham, Francis Moore, Ryo Inouye, Darrell Strain, Jeanine Miller and Marlys Bod. The February concert would be the last of a series of concerts performed specifically for children, presented by the Tacoma Philharmonic Association and underwritten by Medosweet Dairies. Four women students at the College of Puget Sound are handbuilding pottery with clay. The two women on the right are working on pedestals that twirl to make it easy to access all parts of the pot. The two women on the left, Cynthia Harris and Maxine Lister, are working with clay in molds. These students are probably in the occupational therapy program at the College of Puget Sound. As of the 1990's the University of Puget Sound is well known for their OT program and it is one of the few programs offered at the post-graduate level there. As of May 1948, ceramics would be featured in the annual student art exhibit. (T.Times, 5/15/1948, p.5)

Two College of Puget Sound students are weaving with large, foot-operated looms while their instructor looks on in this photograph from January of 1948. The foot-pedals are used to raise and lower specific strands of the warp threads (running from front to back of the loom and sometimes long enough to be wrapped around a cylinder at the back) in a pre-set pattern. When the warp is separated between top and bottom layers the weft threads held on a large bobbin (seen in the hand of the woman on the left) are shoved across the loom and removed from the other side. Then the pedals are changed to select the next set of warp threads for the pattern.

This aerial view of the Pacific Lutheran College campus and grounds was taken in January of 1948. Harstad Hall, "Old Main", stands proudly in the middle of the expanding campus as shown in this elevated view. Just in front of the point where the sidewalks converge is the entrance gate to Pacific Lutheran College. The Student Union is to the left of "Old Main" and the Science Hall is between and above them. The library is to the upper right. In the far, upper left is the new Memorial Gymnasium. R. Franklin Thompson, Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.) was the President of College of Puget Sound. College of Puget Sound was established in 1888. Their Alma Mater was "All hail to Alma Mater, The best that can be found, The spirit of the Westland---All hail to Puget Sound. This aerial photograph of part of the northwest section of the Stadium District was taken in August of 1948. The large Tudor Gothic design building at the bottom is Annie Wright Seminary, 827 Tacoma Avenue North, which opened at this address in 1924. Immediately above Annie Wright are the courts and clubhouse of the Tacoma Lawn Tennis Club, 502 Borough Road. The large area of trees to the left is the "top" end of Garfield Park. TPL-9494

Stadium High School was built in 1891, it was built in the French Chateau style and originally designed by architect A. B. Hewitt, architect Frederick Heath remodeled the building and changed it into the school. Stadium Bowl was built in 1909, it has been remodeled many times because of mudslides and weather damage. The buildings were designed by Sutton, Whitney & Dugan, architects. The Tudor Gothic brick buildings are covered by ivy. The roofs are studded by dormers. Expansive grounds surround the buildings.

The Marchetta Ki girls marching unit at Lincoln High School was scheduled to perform at two football games during the first weekend of November in 1948. On Friday evening, November 5 they appeared at the Bellingham - Lincoln H. S. game in the Lincoln Bowl. The next day they were part of the halftime show at the College of Puget Sound (now U.P.S) Homecoming game against Central Washington. Tacoma Public Schools served Thanksgiving meals to about 12,000 students with children receiving turkey, dressing and all the holiday fixings. The school cooks and their assistants were busy preparing the special meal all day.
