Eastern Star Convention at Armory. Mrs. Eva Holland Hamilton of Chicago is on the right. She was the Most Worthy Grand Matron of the General Grand Chapter and was a visitor throughout the 59th annual session of Order of the Eastern Star held in Tacoma in June 1947. Mrs. Stephen J. Chadwick of Olympia, a past Most Worthy Matron of the General Grand Chapter, was affectionately known as "the First Lady" in Washington Eastern Star. She is wearing an overblouse of lace and crochet. Eastern Star Convention at the New Yorker Cafe, Margaret Kinnich. The Grand Chapter of Washington Order of Eastern Star held its session in Tacoma June 19 - 21, 1947. More than 2,000 members and guests were expected from Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and British Columbia. National President of the Cooks, Waiters, Waitresses and Bartenders Union christening new building. This new building was purchased for $68,500 and will house the new local union headquarters. The new building will have a comfortable lobby, clubroom, union hall and kitchen. The building is expected to be dedicated in December of this year. In 1919 the Edward B. Rhodes Post No. 2 of the American Legion drew together a group of veterans at the Tacoma Armory to consider an organization and elect a delegate to the first national convention of the Legion in St. Louis. Regular meetings started soon afterwards. Since then new veterans are inducted on a regular basis. Tacoma Mayor Val Fawcett with woman believed to be his wife Linda at Gyro Club District Convention function at Tacoma Golf and Country Club in August of 1946. The three day annual convention of the Gyro Club District Number 4 attracted 500 delegates representing 18 clubs from Washington, Oregon and British Columbia. Cooks and Waiters Union, new officers. Substantial wage increases for employees of restaurants in Tacoma and Pierce County were provided in a new agreement executed August 27, 1946, effective September 1, 1946 - June 1, 1948, between the Pierce County Division of the Washington State Restaurant Men's Association and Local #61 of the Cooks and Waiters Union. Bartenders at the Wild West Veteran's Club in Nov. 1947. The club was affiliated with VFW Wild West Post No. 91. It was located in the Crawford's Sea Grill Restaurant Building at 505 Broadway. Wild West Veteran's Club was affiliated with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Wild West Post Number 91. The club was only listed in the 1947 Tacoma City Directory at this location, in the 1949 Tacoma City Directory the club is listed as being located at 260 South 5th Street. Wild West Club was located in Crawford's Sea Grill Restaurant, a two story concrete blocks and glass, 275 person capacity building. Crawford's became very popular with Tacoma residents and tourists, especially after they added a unique terrace room in 1950. Exterior view of Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, Tacoma Lodge No. 174. The Elks building had just been painted and repaired, additional remodeling would also be done on the interior of the building. Elks members chose this site in 1914 and it was officially opened in 1916. The stairs are spanish style and have a decorative balustrade between Broadway and Commerce Street. The style of the building could be classified as part of the Beaux-Arts movement with many classical and renaissance features including the symmetrical facade, grand arched openings, medallions and decorative swags. The Elks relocated to a new temple on So. Union Ave. in 1965.

Permanente Metals was an aluminum producing plant, the demand for aluminum and aluminum made products had dramatically increased since the end of World War II. Aluminum products could be found in kitchens, automobiles, airplanes, luggage, homes and many other areas; aluminum offered durability yet was extremely light weight and versatile. Permanente Metals had started operations in Tacoma in late October of this year. Permanente Metals employees in plant's pot room, the white powdery substance is alumina, which is discharged into the reduction pots, the molten aluminum is siphoned from the pots into large capacity ladles, photo ordered by United Steel Workers of America.

Forty Women at Masonic Temple, Daughters of the Nile, Mrs. Shotwell. The Zora Temple No. 5, Daughters of the Nile, were honored by the official visit of the supreme queen, Mrs. Ray Hoble of Rockford, Illinois. The decorating committee chose an oriental theme. The program included an exhibition drill by the Egyptian patrol and the dancing girls presented an Egyptian number. These women are wearing a variety of costumes and stand on the stage at the Masonic Temple. The formation of the Daughters of the Nile originated in the home of Mrs. Mable R. Krows, Seattle, Washington. She and a number of other Shriners' wives on February 20, 1913, formed the Ladies of the Nile Club. The Beta alums held their annual silver tea for alumni of the Alpha Beta Upsilon sorority from the College of Puget Sound at Don and Lilian Shotwell's home in 1948. Daughters of the Nile, Mrs. Shotwell installation at Fellowship Hall, Don Shotwell. The Daughters of the Nile held their annual installation of officers of the Zora Temple No. 5 March 26, 1948, in Fellowship Hall of the Masonic Temple. These thirteen women wear evening gowns, above-the-elbow lace, fingerless gloves, and floral headpieces. The purpose of the order is to pursue "a philosophy of living which will enable them (the members), when shadows lengthen, to look back on a life well spent." Lillian M. (Mrs. J.Donald) Shotwell was installed as Queen of the Zora Temple No. 5 of the Daughters of the Nile in a ceremony held at Fellowship Masonic Hall on March 26, 1948. The room had been transformed into a scene of Oriental splendor with the river Nile flowing in the background. The Egyptian chorus and Egyptian dancers performed. Queen Lillian Shotwell carried a shower bouquet of baby orchids for the installation. Mrs. Shotwell is shown seated on the throne, which is covered with oriental carpets. The purpose of the follies for 1947 was to raise funds for the Tacoma Occupational Therapy Workshop. It had been twenty years since the Tacoma Junior League had put on a follies. In 1948, three women Amvets members discuss world events over drinks and cigarettes. They were with a group of one hundred and thirty Amvets attending a banquet at the Winthrop Hotel. The guest of honor was National Commander Edgar C. Corry who spoke on the topic "Peace Through National Preparedness." (T. Times, 5/12/48, p. 3).
