CPS. Students at the College of Puget Sound are determined to win the many valuable awards in the Tacoma T-Man contest. One young man is wearing a gas mask. Two hold rifles and the last one holds a revolver in his hand and a pipe in his teeth. They have scoured the campus in hopes of locating the elusive subject. The 7th jingle clue was, "For he is sound as sound can be, A saint in two he is, not three. All will vouch and praise his name, and then go on to win the game". "T-Men", an Edward Small production released by Eagle Lion Films, was opening at the Rialto Theater. The film starred Dennis O'Keefe and was based on a compilation of three actual cases of US Treasury Department agents going under cover to track down a counterfeiting ring. CPS. The College of Puget Sound SPURS hosted the regional meeting of SPURS, the national women's honorary service organization, March 5, 6, and 7, 1948, on the CPS campus. Members from Washington, Oregon and Montana attended. Three main topics were discussed: new member selection, activities and expansion of activities. ca. 1948. Christie Walker points out a "favorite" child among a photograph of French orphans to interested donors; Edward J. Cooper, Bank of California executive, stands at her side. C.P.S. students opened their hearts - and wallets - in support of French orphan boys. The student body decided by ballot to "adopt" the De Bon Secours French orphanage for the rest of the winter (February-May,1948) and signed pledges totaling approximately $1000. The money raised would be sent to C.A.R.E. and the organization would send food and clothing packages. It cost about $29 to support one child per month. The orphanage was in debt due to France's post-war situation and money raised would help the orphanage through the winter months before spring crops and before Marshall Plan aid started. De Bon Secours housed 35 boys between the ages of 4-14. Their parents had either been killed during the war or sent to German concentration camps. The drive to collect funds, sponsored by the International Relations Club, began the first week of February, 1948. By February 6, the campaign neared the $1000 in pledges redeemed and a check was turned over to Edward J. Cooper, Bank of California assistant manager, who handled the C.A.R.E. gifts. Todd Hall, College of Puget Sound's men's dormitory, was named after Dr. Edward H. Todd, in honor of his many years of service to the school. College of Puget Sound had many new additions in mind for the future, hoping to make CPS one of the nicest and most modern liberal arts colleges in the Northwest. Todd Hall, College of Puget Sound's men's dormitory, was designed by architects, Sutton, Whitney & Dugan and Mock & Morrison. The ground breaking ceremony was held in July 1946. The cornerstone was laid by Dr. Edward H. Todd, CPS's previous president, the building was named in his honor for his many years of service to the institution. On October 16, 1947 College of Puget Sound officials and West Disinfecting Company representatives inspected the newly refinished gym floor in the CPS Gymnasium which had originally been built in 1924. The floor had been re-done and coated with "lastincote" for durability. Left to right, A. R. Emerson, W. R. Palling, Gerard Banks, W. E. Patrick, Alice C. Bond and John Heinrick. The CPS gymnasium was now ready for indoor sports to begin.

Tacoma Chamber of Commerce, new men's dorm under construction. The brick work on the College of Puget Sound was started June 2, 1947, by the MacDonald Building Company June 2, 1947. The Doctor of Divinity was conferred upon William Bowman who was recently named superintendent of the Vancouver area of the Methodist Church. The Doctor of Human Letters was conferred upon Charles A. R. Franklin Thompson, President of College of Puget Sound, is wearing a baseball mitt and standing on the C.P.S. baseball field. Thompson had a Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and a Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.), he had been the President at C.P.S. for many years. President Thompson liked to get involved in many of the College activities (Tamanawas, 1947).

R. Franklin Thompson, Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B.) was the President of College of Puget Sound. College of Puget Sound was established in 1888. Their Alma Mater was "All hail to Alma Mater, The best that can be found, The spirit of the Westland---All hail to Puget Sound. Her guardian is the Mountain, Beside the silver sea; We love thee, Alma Mater---All hail, all hail to thee."

A contest was held in 1946 at the College of Puget Sound (now U.P.S.) to select the best look alikes for "Daisy Mae" and "Lil Abner" for the Sadie Hawkins Day dance that was held on campus on November 2. The winners of the contest were Gwen Roberts (center left) and Harold "Hal" Wolf (her dance partner), both freshmen. Sadie Hawkins Day was created by the cartoonist Al Capp and made its debut in his Lil Abner strip on November 15,1937. By 1939 over 200 colleges were holding Sadie Hawkins Day events. TPL-9200

An elevated view of the matriculation exercises at the College of Puget Sound. Nearly 900 freshmen were welcomed at CPS. They participated in the centuries-old tradition of matriculation by passing between their professors and then on through the color post quadrangle where they were personally welcomed by President R. Franklin Thompson into the student body. They would pass the color post again upon graduation. (T.Times, 10/10/1946, p.5)

Frank W. Patrick was named athletic director and head coach of the CPS Loggers football team at the College of Puget Sound in 1946. He was a former University of Pittsburgh and National Pro All-American football star. He played with the Chicago Cardinals of the National Professional League in 1938 and 1939. At the 1937 Rose Bowl game, playing for the Univ. of Pittsburg, he carried the ball for two touchdowns and helped defeat the Huskies 21-0. Coach Patrick turned in his resignation after CPS's 1948 losing season. (Tamanawas, 1946)

Two co-eds in small booth with sign "Spur Stamp Sale." Six students gathered around booth. Spurs were a service-oriented campus organization composed then of sophomore women. Puget Sound's chapter was the fifth formed nationally in 1925.

Close-up of splashing fountain in new science complex at the University of Puget Sound. The circular fountain, 74-feet in diameter, was in the middle of the U-shaped, three story Gothic-Tudor Thompson Hall. The $4,000,000 project was dedicated on April 21, 1968. In 2005 the university decided to build a new 51,000 sq.foot science building linking the north and south wings of Thompson Hall, thereby displacing the fountain and a large sequoia tree. The school hoped to build a new highly visible water feature on the west side of campus. (www.ups.edu)

New science complex at the University of Puget Sound. After more than two years of construction, the new science building, named in honor of longtime U.P.S. president R. Franklin Thompson, was dedicated in April, 1968. The $4,000,000 science complex was the largest building project in the school's (then) 80-year history. It was designed by Nelson, Karona & Zeigler, architects, and built by McDonald Bldg. Co. View of U-shaped, three story Thompson Hall facing Union Ave., shows off the Tudor-Gothic brick architecture. A circular fountain, 74-feet in diameter, lay in the middle of the complex. The fountain would become the scene in the coming years of much illicit wading, dunkings and pranks. View of elaborate, newly completed $4,000,000 science complex located at the University of Puget Sound. Taking over two years to construct, the complex, named after 26-year-president R. Franklin Thompson, would be dedicated on April 21, 1968. Its Tutor-Gothic style of architecture neatly fit in with the remainder of the campus located in the city's north end. The 74-foot diameter water fountain, located in the Harry Brown Family Quadrangle, could be illuminated at night. President Thompson had led the school into an era of major expansion which included the construction of four dorms, the president's brick home, library, music building, student center, eight men's housing, two women's dorms, Baker (football) Stadium, Kilworth Chapel and McIntyre Hall. On September 30, 1941, before moving into the College of Puget Sound's new Student Union building, representatives of the campus sororities meet to draw lots for room assignments. Numbers were drawn from a box held by Barbara Tomlinson, the pictured small daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Warren Tomlinson. On November 8, 1940, the freshmen presented Booth Tarkington's comedy "The Travelers" before a student assembly.
