Morris Jaffe-Edith Brodsky held their wedding and wedding reception at the Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel Winthrop on November 3, 1946. Eleven waitresses, a chef and kitchen manager stand behind the heavily laden banquet serving table. The bride was the daughter of Phillip and Anne Brodsky. The groom was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Jaffe of Seattle. The bride's cake, not shown, was surrounded by 100 gardenias and a sprinkling of silver sequins. (T.Times, 11/6/1946, p.8)

On June 5, 1944, the War Stamp Minute Maids made an unannounced appearance at the Young Mens' Business Club luncheon to sell war bonds and stamps. They made a pleasing sight with their "V" for Victory halo hats and red, white and blue stamp boxes. The pictured men stepped forward to buy a $100 War Bond each. Pictured, left to right, purchasing their bond are George Neumeyer, Gil Gunderson, Leonard Peck, Jim Lasher and Gese Nist. Heading up the sale for the Maids are, left to right, Jean Hallen, Shirley Abel, Merrille Longstreth, Marilyn McCormack and Patty Doe. The maids were raising funds for the 5th War Loan Campaign. (T. William Harrison "Jack" Dempsey was born on June 24, 1895, and celebrated his 49th birthday while visiting Tacoma in support of the 5th War Bond drive. The guest of honor at a dinner held at the Hotel Winthrop, Jack Dempsey was surprised by the appearance of a cake since he had not mentioned it was his birthday. He blew out all 49 candles with one breath. On June 24 and 25, 1944, the former heavyweight champ made several appearances in Tacoma including a stop at the Todd Pacific Shipbuilding yard on the Tideflats and a visit to Point Defiance. He had last appeared in Tacoma about 1932 in an exhibition on behalf of the Tacoma Junior League Milk Fund. Dempsey was a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Coast Guard at the time of his 1944 visit. Construction of signs was one of the "1,000 uses of plywood" being promoted at the annual meeting of the Douglas Fir Plywood Association held in the Winthrop Hotel from June 8-9, 1948. Many signs produced by the Cole & Redmayne Company, the makers of "Vivid Tone" products, were on display. "For Sale" signs, "Carstens" wieners and ham, school zone signs with a little girl and "Susie Q," a policeman and many other plywood cutouts were featured in their sign display area. California Governor Earl Warren, Republican Vice-Presidential candidate and future Supreme Court Chief Justice, Mrs. Warren, and the Warren children Dorothy, Virginia, Nina Elizabeth, and Bobby, during a campaign appearence in Tacoma. Four of the Warren children accompanied their parents on a whirlwind tour of the Pacific Northwest. Hundreds of women had lined up as much as an hour before to meet the Warrens at a Republican reception. Tacoma was the nation's leader in the plywood industry. Douglas Fir Plywood Association and the Plywood Research Foundation were working on developing new and additional products that could be manufactured from parts of the tree not already being utilized. Patricia Clarke modeled a yellow and black formal with an over skirt for the Fisher's Department Store style show held in the recently opened Wedgewood Room at the Hotel Winthrop in February of 1948. Beginning in March, Fisher's started a series of monthly fashion shows held on the first Thursday of each month. Starting at 1 p.m. the fashion shows were held in connection with a "musical" luncheon with music provided by Bob Dickinson and his orchestra; there was no charge other then the cost of the luncheon. The Tacoma Times was about to begin publishing a Sunday edition of the Times, it would begin on December 5, 1948. On Saturday September 6, 1952 a sound truck caravan carrying the Pierce County Youth for Cain set out from the Winthrop Hotel to drum up support for Senator Harry Cain's re-election. The Senator's daughter, Marlyce "Candy" Cain, handed out candy canes from a small basket, as various speakers took turns at the microphone. Cain supporters taking part in the caravan included Harry Cain Jr. (second from left), "Candy" Cain (at center with basket) and Bill Brown (second from right). Senator Cain was unseated by Henry M. A group of thirty-two men and one woman gathered for Standard Brands' annual Quarter Century club dinner for the Northwest area at the Winthrop Hotel. Four new members were inducted into the club: Clifford T. Blanchfield, Henry E. Dieatrick, Ada Kacer, and Harry E. Kuhn. All four new members were employed at the Fleischmann plant in Sumner. Each new member must have completed 25 years of continuous service with Standard Brands and they were presented with an engraved gold watch and a certificate of long service at the dinner. Western Brewers Institute's booth at Washington State Tavern Association Convention consisted of a room arrangement with sofa and chairs. A large sign at the rear of the exhibit shows a map of Washington and announces, "87% of your Customers Prefer these Washington Beers" and "8 Friendly Breweries Serving You Dependably." This was the first annual convention of the Washington State Tavern Association held in Tacoma. 500 members of the association attended the three-day session in October of 1952 . Heidelberg Brewery- Salesmen's wives boarding bus outside the Winthrop Hotel. Heidelberg often held sales meetings in Tacoma and entertainment was planned for the ladies. Here the wives are neatly attired in coats and some furs, as well as the requisite hat, and ready to board a bus for a sightseeing junket. The brewery was known as Columbia Breweries from 1900-1953; in July of 1953 the company changed its name to Heidelberg Brewing Co. Its most famous products were the beers "Alt Pilsener" and "Columbia Ale." Both labels stopped production with the breweries' closure in 1979. TPL-8479

Winthrop Hotel, new sample furniture on display in rooms 505, 522 & 525. The room has been decorated for the discriminating traveler with a patterned embossed carpet, floral drapes, full bed with chenille bedspread, dresser, a desk/vanity and a variety of tables and chairs with numerous lamps. A bench has been placed at the end of the bed to hold an open suitcase or for sitting. A long coffee table, however, has been placed blocking a door.

The beaming lass pictured is Lynn Green, the 1954 Sweetheart of Sigma Chi, Delta Phi Chapter. She has recently been selected over four other contestants to rule as Sweetheart at the Sigma Chi dance in the Crystal Ballroom of the Winthrop Hotel. Lynn Green from Redmond was a sophomore at the College of Puget Sound. She was working toward degrees in sociology and education. She belonged to the Chi Omega sorority and Spurs. (TNT 3/7/1954, pg. Jordan Baking Company banquet at the Winthrop Hotel. The bakery was introducing a new and improved loaf of bread, "Sunbeam Bread". The new trademark showed a little blonde girl eating a slice of bread and butter. "Sunbeam Bread was an achievement of many years experimentation to produce a truly superior loaf of bread," according to Arthur K. Jordan, owner of the bakery. The new wrapper design was executed in a light blue and white with a floral border and a picture of the girl eating a slice of bread and butter. Arthur K.
