The chapel was erected by the Raynor Alumnae Chapter of the Seminary in honor of Mrs. Amanda Raynor, vice president of the school from its opening in 1884 till 1908. The ivy-covered walls of Annie Wright Seminary do not appear to have changed in the decades since the school was established. The elegant brick buildings of the college preparatory school for girls still remain in the city's northend. The Tudor Gothic style buildings were designed by architects Sutton Whitney and Dugan and built by J.E. Bonnell, contractor. Photograph ordered by the Shield yearbook.

Although Annie Wright Seminary had been at this location, 827 Tacoma Ave. No., only since 1924; it was in the process of celebrating its Diamond Jubilee in October of 1958 when this picture was taken. The first class of 93 girls entered Annie Wright in the fall of 1884 in the school's first building at Tacoma & Division Avenues. Annie Wright experienced financial troubles due to decreased enrollment in the 1930's and increased expenses during the early part of WWII; the school was nearly forced to close in 1943. Headmistress Ruth Jenkins and the Board of Trustees were given 48 hours to raise enough money to pay the most outstanding debts. Friends, alumnae and students rallied to save the school. Annie Wright Seminary continued to expand with a new wing added in 1957. In 2002, the school had pupils from seven states and eight countries and was planning to add a 10.3 million three story addition. (The Shield:1959, TNT 9-30-02, B-1)

Ray Ridge Motors. A rear view of a new 1947 Lincoln Continental including the driver's side. The rear wheel wells are skirted and the spare tire is encased in a special cover at the rear of the automobile. The rear bumper is highly reflective and a rear lamp is seen just behind the spare tire. The automobile is parked outside Annie Wright Seminary.

ca. 1950. Aerial view of Annie Wright Seminary, from Tacoma Ave. No. to Commencement Bay in the North end of Tacoma. The heavily wooded area between the school and the Stadium district is Garfield Park. Annie Wright Seminary was endowed by Northern Pacific Railroad's President C. B. Wright, with an original grant of $50,000. The school was named for his daughter Annie. It opened in 1884 with 94 students, at its original location of 611 Division Ave. It was moved to this location in 1924.

ca. 1925. Annie Wright Seminary under construction. The Tudor Gothic building was designed by Sutton, Whitney & Dugan, architects. The Seminary first opened in 1884 at 611 Division Street. The school on Tacoma Ave No., which opened to students in the Fall of 1924, appears barren without its lush green lawns and landscaping. (WSHS- negative A852-0)

ca. 1959. Aerial of Annie Wright Seminary in the North End of Tacoma. The heavily wooded area to the right is Garfield Park. The school is bounded by this park, Tacoma Ave North and No. 10th. Commencement Bay can be seen in the background of the picture. The school moved to this Gothic building in 1924 and remains there today. The girls' school offered grades Kindergarten through high school. In 1959, the college preparatory school had 300 students. It opened in 1884 with a total of 46 students under the guidance of founder Rt. Rev. John Adams Paddock. 1958-59 was the Seminary's Golden Jubilee, celebrating 75 years of achievement. Annie Wright Seminary Christmas Doll Bazaar. Group of young women with dolls arranged in a village scene. The girls are all wearing the same uniform-type dress. The doll bazaar was an annual event at the school, with proceeds going to benefit the Bishop Huston Missionary Society. The bazaar opened with a doll buggy parade by the school's littlest girls. Each year Annie Wright Seminary held a Dads' Day to honor students' fathers. A variety of activities was planned which dads and their daughters could enjoy. A smiling father prepares to take on his daughter in a game of tennis on May 18, 1957. They are both clutching Wilson tennis rackets with wooden frames. The timeless beauty of Tudor Gothic-style architecture is reflected in the ivy-covered columns of Annie Wright Seminary. The school was designed by the architectural firm of Sutton, Whitney & Dugan and built in 1924 by J.E. Bonnell, contractor. In 1957 Annie Wright grew to include the construction of new classrooms and a music room. It was primarily a girls' school and attracted students from as far away as Hawaii. The Rt. Rev. Stephen Fielding Bayne, Jr., gazes at a portrait of himself that is hung in the Great Hall of Annie Wright Seminary. The painting shows the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia with staff in hand. Bishop Bayne became the president of the Board of Trustees at Annie Wright in 1948. The painting was done by Jeanie M. Walkinshaw of Seattle; it was presented to the school by the 1957 graduating class. Bishop Bayne is wearing a purple cassock and pectoral cross. The pastoral staff he holds is a gift from Ruth Jenkins, headmistress of Annie Wright, in honor of the bishop's 10th anniversary as bishop of the diocese. Photograph ordered by Annie Wright Seminary.
