Formerly Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief of South Africa, the Earl had extensive military experience in both the South African War and First World War. He had attended the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and was an officer in the 7th Queen's Own Hussars, the Royal Horse Guards, and the 2nd Life Guards.
