ca. 1954. Students are clustered close to the very modern brick South Hall dormitory for women on the campus of Pacific Lutheran College, in a 1954 photograph. Clothing styles have changed since then but the art of socializing has not. The students are taking advantage of a lovely day to converse with one another. The dormitory opened for the first time that year and was home to 129 students. The facilities included two lovely lounges with televisions and a grand piano, four small kitchen units, complete laundry service and two small lounge-study rooms. ca. 1954. Groups of students chat on the campus of Pacific Lutheran College in 1954 outside the new North Hall dormitory. The presence of long coats and sweaters may mean that it was taken in the fall. North Hall, along with the South Hall dormitory for women, was completed in fall, 1954; it housed 120 men students, two per room. Both new dorms were very large and made of brick with multiple windows to bring inside the beauty of the outdoors. They were designed by architects Lea, Pearson & Richards and built by Bennett-Campbell, general contractors, at a total cost of $1,150,000. The men enjoyed the same amenities as the women: two large lounges, several smaller ones and a complete self-service laundry. A busy social and spiritual life was planned by dormitory officers. ca. 1921. Pacific Luthern College's (later University) first building dominates the landscape in 1921. Designed by architect August Heide, the cornerstone was laid in 1891, one year after the college was founded. Known first as "Old Main," the landmark structure was renamed Harstad Hall for the school's first president, the Rev. B. A. Harstad. (B5709)

ca. 1922. This is Harstad Hall, familarly known as "Old Main," in a photograph taken circa 1922. "Old Main" was the first building on the Pacific Lutheran College (later University) campus located at 12180 Park Ave. So., Parkland. Its cornerstone was laid in October of 1891. The building was renamed for the school's first president, Rev. Bjug Harstad, in 1960. It had a myriad of uses over the years including classrooms, administration offices, chapel, library, dining hall and dormitories. G40.1-142, TPL-474, BU-12762

Pacific Lutheran College President O.A. Tingelstad poses with the Swedish granite cornerstone for the new library building at the October 23, 1937 cornerstone laying ceremony. The cornerstone reads in Latin : "Verbum Dei Manet in Aeternum MCMXXXVII." The Latin phrase translates as "The word of God remains in Eternity 1937." The building was designed by Emanuel J. The cornerstone laying ceremony of the new library building on the Pacific Lutheran College campus took place on Saturday, October 23, 1937. A crowd gathered around the partially completed brick building to listen to the college's "Choir of the West." At this time, the school had an enrollment of 700 and was a Christian Junior College and Normal School headed by Dr. O.A. Tingelstad. This building was replaced in 1967 by the Mortvedt Library; it was remodeled and is now known as Xavier Hall. (T.Times 10/25/1937, pg. 3)

Dr. Seth Eastvold (right), president of Pacific Lutheran College, along with his wife Enga and Board of Trustees chairman Dr. H.L. Foss of Seattle are gathered together to dedicate the new science hall in October of 1947. The building dedication ceremony will include many guest speakers and a performance by PLC's famous "Choir of the West." PLC had also recently dedicated their new student union building. Pacific Lutheran College had just dedicated their new $200,000 Science Hall in 1947. Classes were now being taught in the building, which had modern, fully equipped labs available in the classrooms. Johnson (standing, left), Master of Science, Biology. Professor Johnson spent two years at PLC from 1946-48 following his release from service at Fort Lewis. He went on to receive a Ph.D. in zoology at Washington State College (later named Washington State University) in 1953 and joined the faculty at the school's College of Veterinary Medicine the same year. Pacific Lutheran College "Choir of the West" with Professor Gunnar J. Malmin, Director of Music and Choir of the West Conductor. The choir wears traditional robes with a monogrammed stole. The Choir of the West toured the area and performed on the radio. They sang a classical repertoire. Prof. Malmin took over as director of the choir in 1937. A group portrait of the elegantly dressed Pacific Lutheran College Chorus on stage was taken on April 1, 1954. The men are dressed in tuxedos while the women are wearing floor length evening gowns. In the center of the photograph at the piano is the conductor, Professor R. Byard Fritts. The 70 member choir was well known for their beautiful voices and performed often with appearances in the Christmas Concert, Capitol rotunda in Olympia, Omnibus of the Arts, Drama-Music Festival, and the Commencement Recital. ca. 1954. This large brick Tudor/Gothic structure is believed to be the library on the campus of Pacific Lutheran College in Parkland. Two students are perched reading on the low brick wall next to the front steps. Pacific Lutheran had undergone great expansion of both facilities and student enrollment in the late forties and early fifties.

500 women attended the Evangelical Lutheran Church convention from the Pacific District in early June, 1953. A large number of them posed for this group portrait in front of the new music/chapel/speech building at Pacific Lutheran College on June 9, 1953. Perhaps some of the meetings may have occurred in the new building as the auditorium was designed to hold over 1,000 people. Mrs. Harold J. Pacific Lutheran College's 1952 Homecoming Queen, Inga Astrup, and her two attendants, Princess Darlene DeJardine and Princess Helen Enger, reigned over Homecoming weekend with the coronation ceremony, the football game against Eastern, the Powder Puff Bowl and various teas. Inga was a junior from Grenora, North Dakota. Darlene was a junior from Tacoma and Helen was a senior from Everett. All three co-eds were majoring in education. (TNT, 11/6/1952, p.13)
