The staff of the Progressive Italian-American Club stand behind the clubs newly modernized bar. The PIA Club was about to celebrate their remodeling by hosting a complimentary buffet luncheon for fraternal and social members and the press. The club, at 739 St. Helens, had been totally remodeled, at a cost of over $70,000 - almost twice the original budget. Rocco Manza, the club manager, and Frank A. Reda, the social chairman, had made elaborate preparations for the event. The same location was later home to Honan's Restaurant. (T. Times, 3/14/46, p. 9).

In April of 1944 the U.S.O. Travellers Aid Service at 13th and Pacific hosted a special Easter egg hunt. The two lucky winners who found the golden eggs that were hidden in the service center each received the special prize of a free telephone call home. As four service men and two travellers aid employees listened in, Pvt. H. Shaboby (left) of Chicago, Illinois and Seaman 1/c Michael V. Moauro of Canton, Ohio waited for their calls to go through. When Seaman Moauro's mother heard her son's voice she wept, and couldn't talk to him; his father came to the phone. In August of 1944, Camp Fire Girls Donna Lee Schaller, Nancy Lee Coons, and Florence Neu helped prepare campaign supplies for the upcoming Community War Chest drive. These girls decided to volunteer for the campaign and spend their last few days of summer vacation helping the Tacoma Community Chest and Council office. Camp Fire Girls giving ten hours of community service were eligible for the National Service emblem, with a Red Star added for each additional twenty five hours. (T. Nearly 40 local Boy Scouts and scout masters helped the 1947 Community Chest campaign by posting pole cards along Tacoma streets to keep Tacoma citizens aware of the upcoming campaign. Here Russell Matthews, Lucien Gumm, Bob Wright and Scoutmasters S/Sgt. L.J. Keehley and Lt. J.A. Kruavica from Troop 102, McChord Field, put up placards in South Tacoma. On Thursday October 9, 1947, the Tacoma Charter of Building Laborers and Hod Carriers honored three members with honorary life membership at a dinner in their union hall. D. L. McInnis became a member in 1916; Joe Collins in 1917; and Dan Avery , a member of the local in Denver, CO in 1888, helped establish the Tacoma chapter when he moved to Tacoma in 1905 and was present when it received its charter in 1911. Fred Wheeler (left) and Charles McDonald congratulate each other as the two newly elected labor leaders for the Cooks, Waiters, Waitresses and Bartenders Local No. 61. The union held a special two day election, Wheeler was appointed the new Outside Business Representative and McDonald the local Secretary-Treasurer. For the second November in a row, the Tahoma Guild of the Tacoma Orthopedic Association in 1947 set out "Wishing Candles" in many restaurants as a fund raiser for a much needed children's hospital in Tacoma. The Steel Workers Organizing Committee later became known as the United Steel Workers of America, including a chapter located in Tacoma, Washington. Tacoma Art League was presenting the work of Colonel C. Ross Greening at the Washington State Historical Building. Colonel Greening painted his graphic paintings while in a German Prison Camp. Colonel Greening was the inventor of the "10 Cent Bomb Site", this technique was used by Colonel James Doolittle in his Tokyo raid. View of Colonel C. The Tacoma Girl Scouts held a Fashion Revue at the Temple Theater on March 20, 1948. The proceeds would benefit the St. Alban's Girl Scout Camp. The Girl Scouts showed traditional and new scouting clothes as well as sports outfits and fashion clothes furnished by Rhodes Brothers Department Store. Background music was provided by Arnold Levenenze at the organ. Four young girls and boys wearing their Sunday best and two teenage girls wearing two-piece bathing suits wait in the sidelines, with four women organizers, for their turn on the runway. The goal of the Stocking Fillers project of the Tacoma Elks Club in 1948 was to insure that every child in Tacoma would be remembered on Christmas day. To help reach their goal, the Elks worked closely with Tacoma's 1,900 Girl Scouts. The scouts made sure that each of the 120 dolls that were given as gifts came with a full wardrobe of handmade clothes. Barn yard dance at Woodbrook Hunt Club, Lakewood Orthopedic Club, Mrs. VanWinkle. "Calico Capers" was sponsored by the Lakewood Orthopedic Association on April 24, 1948. Hay and spring flowers decorated the club. "Gals in gingham and lads in jeans" danced to old-time music and more contemporary music. Here we see Thelma and William M. Busch dancing to the music. Bob Hager led the group in square dances. The Lakewood Guild was one of the newer of the 37 guilds associated with the Tacoma Orthopedic Association. As part of the Goof Parade men, dressed as women wearing mops for hair, dresses, and on one case, women's underwear on top of long johns, march and play drums and cymbals. Poggie Derby at Pt. Defiance Picnic Beach, Isaah Walton League, Erling Bergerson. 24 boys and girls fished in the Father-Mother-Son-Daughter dog fish derby held August 15, 1948, at Point Defiance Park. They brought in 60 dog fish. The Erling Bergerson and Bob Foz trophy and 1st prize went to David Scott with a 35" dog fish. Bobby Scott took 2nd place with a 33" dog fish. 3rd place went to Bill Schneider, 4th place to Raymond Cox and 5th place to Buzzy Cain. Post #138, auxiliary and men in joint installation, American Legion Post #138. 14 women from the auxiliary pose in front of the stage at the American Legion Hall. Bessie Potter, in the center of the front row wearing a dark dress, was the new auxiliary president and Ann Dale, third from the right, was the first vice president. Each of them wears a corsage. They wear pretty dresses of the longer street length with necklaces, a brooch or earrings.

On December 30, 1948, the Elks Temple at 565 Broadway opened its doors to members, wives and ladies to see the newly renovated building. The club room, very popular with the majority of the membership, was just one of the rooms that was completely redone. Everything - chairs, tables, floor coverings, light fixtures - was new and modernized. Even the billiard tables were completely overhauled. All the funiture was custom made in Tacoma. Old Timers nite at Elks Club, Harry Lynch. All members of the Elks with 25 years or more service were honored with dinner at the Elks Club on January 26, 1949. After dinner the Old Timers marched to the lodge room and, after a short business session, they were treated to a two-hour professional vaudeville show and surprises. More than 400 members and their guests were expected. A band sits at the edge of the floor for the performance. A stuffed elk stands by one of the exits and a mounted elk head is over one of the doors at the rear on the room. Murals decorate the walls. (T.Times, 1/24/1949, p.2)

Lou Plante was president of the Tacoma Gun Club when it sponsored the Washington Birthday Classic held on Saturday and Sunday, February 19 & 20, 1949 at the club on Highway 99 in Lakewood. Shooters came to Tacoma for the annual shoot from all parts of the Northwest and parts of California. A keen trap man, Mr. Plante was a life member of the Tacoma Gun Club. He moved to Tacoma in 1911, and was a member of the Plaster Contractors Association. (T.Times, 2/19/1949, p.5)
