Shriners gather in Tacoma to board the special train to the Golden Jubilee 1938 Imperial Council Session to be held in Los Angeles June 6-9. A farm wagon carries eight men. Several other men wait for an opportunity to ride in the wagon which displays a sign "New Deal." Parades, events, stunts and hijinks will be an important part of the convention.

On December 3rd, 1938, The Golden Jubilee was brought to a close with a banquet at the Winthrop Hotel, where 600 Shriners from 12 temples gathered to commemorate the founding of Tacoma's Afifi Temple. Honored were the "Old Timers," those who were members before 1900 and helped to grow the membership from 8 to the current 2,000. Tacoma Elks motion picture. Man and woman holding a piece of paper and standing in front of Elks casting office. Sign in window "Now Casting Tacoma Elks Own Motion Picture." The Elks had signed the Peptimist Motion Picture Corp. of Hollywood to make a motion picture comedy drama woven around the industrial life and scenic beauties of Tacoma. The script called for a cast of 500 Tacoma men, women and children, with the two lead female roles to be salaried. An unidentified Tacoma motorcycle patrolman operates the camera while cameraman L.A. Tatom, in white knickers and sweater, selects the best angle. Director L. Jack Sherry crouches by a 1931 Buick eight automobile directing the action, involving three motorcycle patrolmen holding two cuties aloft. In 1931, the Tacoma Elks commissioned a motion picture comedy/drama about Tacoma to be made by the Peptimist Motion Picture Corporation of Hollywood. This staged production photograph was taken in the Stadium Bowl. Patrolmen appearing in the film were officers Bill Cordell, Edwin Janassen, Bob Marshall and George Johnson. The Tacoma Drama League had a full program of plays scheduled for the 1934-35 season. The first production was a revival of the old fashioned melodrama "The Streets of New York". In their effort to recreate the true atmosphere of an old time play, special scenery, costuming and lighting had to be designed and constructed. From 1933 through 1939 the Tacoma Little Theater productions were presented on the stage of the Slavonian Hall at 2306 No. 30th St. In 1940 they moved to their current home at 210-12 No. I St.

Undated photograph of the Matrons Club. The woman seated front left is Helen Beck Stafford, one of the founders of the group. Dr. Stafford moved to Tacoma in 1926 to marry Wendell P. Stafford on New Years Eve. Even though she had taught for a few years in Kansas schools, Tacoma school personnel directors refused to hire a black teacher. She stayed at home and cared for her husband and daughter. She and several other women who stayed home to rear their children would get together for a social outlet. In 1927, they formally organized the Matrons Club. The women who attended the meetings often brought their children along and the children would play together. Last Man Club, American Legion, November 30, 1946. Eighteen men stand behind six empty chairs draped with American flags during their annual meeting held at the Hotel Winthrop. The Last Man Club was formed by World War I veterans who were also past Commanders of the Edward B. Rhodes Post of the American Legion in December of 1938. A bottle of 1917 cognac was reserved for the sole survivor to drink a toast to his fallen fellow members.

Nearly 40 local Boy Scouts and scout masters helped the 1947 Community Chest campaign by posting pole cards along Tacoma streets to keep Tacoma citizens aware of the upcoming campaign.
