Morris Jaffe-Edith Brodsky held their wedding and wedding reception at the Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel Winthrop on November 3, 1946. Eleven waitresses, a chef and kitchen manager stand behind the heavily laden banquet serving table. The bride was the daughter of Phillip and Anne Brodsky. The groom was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Jaffe of Seattle. The bride's cake, not shown, was surrounded by 100 gardenias and a sprinkling of silver sequins. (T.Times, 11/6/1946, p.8)

Tacoma Housing Authority Valentine Party at Salishan. Salishan began as a community for military, war workers and their families. The first families moved in, in 1943. The community center offered many activities for youth to take part in. The Valentine's Day dance was sponsored by the Tacoma Housing Authority. Martinac Shipbuilding was founded by Joseph M. Martinac, he established himself as an expert boat builder in Tacoma. Martinac has built minesweepers, purse seiners, sardine and tuna boats, pleasure boats and has converted fishing vessels into Navy patrol boats. Western Boat was about to launch a YP627, self propelled patrol craft, for the navy, in honor of Navy Day. Alexander S. Melovidoff was the founder and president of the Tacoma Conservatory of Music. For many years he conducted a summer band concert series at Point Defiance Park. This picture shows Mr. Melovidoff and his All-Tacoma Band as they appeared in 1947. Their first concert in the park that year was on June 29th. They played 15 numbers. (T.Times, 6/26/1947, p.13)

Tacoma's Community Chest Parade officially kicked off the 1947 fund raising campaign. Thousands of people gathered on Pacific Avenue to enjoy one of the most colorful parades in Tacoma history. Tacoma businesses, organizations and community members gathered together in the hopes of making it a successful campaign. Bellarmine's annual Bazaar was a day filled with a variety of activities, including a theatrical production and an evening semi formal dance. The event was sponsored by the Philomathea Club. Elks Christmas Dance Committee was making arrangements for their annual dance. The committee's Chairman was Lowell and Evelyn Wasser, they were in charge of the event. The Elks would be collecting Christmas gifts for needy children between the ages of one and 14 years. The Elks were planning to distribute 600 gifts to children during the holiday season. Dance committee members are wrapping gifts and deciding on the dance decorations (T. Times, 12/5/47, p. 15).

Renamed Veterans Day in 1953, November 11 was first proclaimed as Armistice Day in 1919 to commemorate the end of World War I. That year, on November 13, John Philip Sousa's band played in the Washington National Guard Armory in Tacoma and President Woodrow Wilson spoke there two months earlier. In 1947, a Military Ball was held on Armistice Day at the Armory, where more than 1,500 people were expected to attend. The presentation of colors to the local reserve units of the Army and Army Air Corps highlighted the evening. Army and Navy dignitaries and prominent civilian guests attended the event. Lincoln High School's Junior-Senior prom was held in the school's gymnasium on January 21, 1949 with Keith Rader and John Hreha as the event's chairmen. The theme for the evening was "Top Hat Twirl" and the gym was decorated with a top hat, cane, white gloves and a New York City skyline. A local orchestra played for the students. Tacoma's Monday Civic Club was planting the first seedling trees at Franklin Park near So. 12th St. and So. Puget Sound. The trees would be known as "The Monday Civic Club Memory Grove", the trees were a gift from the Washington State Forestry Department. Over 100 members of the Civic Club were participating in the ceremonies, which would begin with a luncheon at the New Yorker Cafe. The Tacoma Times on their front page reported on the wedding of James H. Louie and Virginia Lew Wing who were married by Rev. Walter Macoskey on August 5, 1948 at First Baptist Church in front of 125 guests. This was the first wedding ceremony officiated for a Chinese-American couple at First Baptist Church. Virginia had been a member of the church since childhood. James is a graduate of University of Washington and received his masters degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Virginia graduated from Stadium High School and is a graduate of St. Joseph Hospital, School of Nursing. Marian Andahl - Arnold Slater wedding. Marian Josephine Andahl and Arnold Clyde Slater were married in front of 400 guests on August 14, 1948. These are believed to be the bride's attendants at the altar of Our Savior's Lutheran Church featuring the maid of honor, four bridesmaids, flower girl and candlelighters. Maid of honor Grace Cuthbert wore a gown of pale blue taffeta and carried delphiniums in crescent shape. Bridesmaids Edna Andahl, Pat Johnson, Lois Buck and Louise Sylstad were in dusty rose taffeta gowns and carried bouquets of rubrum lilies. Candlelighters, in yellow taffeta, were Delores Burns and Mrs. Andres Holt, Jr. Dressed in blue taffeta was Linda Peterson, flower girl. Marian Slater was a graduate of Stadium High School while her new husband Arnold graduated from Lincoln High School and was a Washington State College student at the time of their wedding.
