More than 10,000 people joined together for prayer and songs at the 1949 Easter sunrise service at Mountain View Memorial Park in Lakewood. It was estimated to be the largest group to ever participate in local Easter worship services. A portion of the large crowd was captured through a doorway as they attended the annual sunrise service. The "Mary E. Petrich" would be capable of fishing for tuna in Australian waters, these waters have never been fished by American coast-based vessels. Western Boat Building Company has just completed and launched the "Mary E. Petrich", the largest tuna clipper ever built. The new vessel is 149-1/2 feet long, has a 34 foot beam, 1,600 horsepower submarine type diesel engine, and cost about $500,000 to build. J. M. Martinac Shipbuilding Corporation just finished building another Tacoma built fishing boat. The beautiful tuna clipper "Mary S." was built for Captain Manuel Sousa and Associates of San Diego, California. "Mary S." is 109 feet long and has a 600 horsepower engine, the vessel cost $300,000. The "Mary S" slid down the ways at Martinac Shipbuilding on April 14, 1949. The , launching of the 109-foot tuna clipper drew the attendance of L. L. The Tacoma Council of Parent-Teacher Associations sponsered an Easter egg hunt for preschool and kindergarten age children at Wright Park in April of 1949. Hazel Churchill was the chairman of this event. She is pictured (center) enjoying a tasty carrot along with fellow Easter Bunnies Suzanne (Mrs. E.R.) Marcy (at right) and another unidentified helper. The 16th annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival began with the coronation of the 1949 Daffodil Queen, and included activities such as flower shows, parades, yacht racing and ski races. Spectators are several feet deep while viewing the Young Men Business Club daffodil float which advertised the club's 25th anniversary.
