Several Wonder Bread delivery trucks are parked in a basement possibly belonging to Continental Baking Co. Metal carts full of loaves of bread are lined up behind the trucks. A large Dodge truck carrying a load of wooden crates covered with chicken wire is parked in front of a line of Pederson's Fryer Farms delivery vans. The driver's door is held open by Jack F. Kidd Sr. (left) while he has a discussion with Joseph (Jack) M. Pederson Jr. They may be talking about the chickens on board. Pederson's employed 88 people, including fifteen delivery drivers. The company, owned by J.M. (Jody) and Dorothy Pederson, had opened a newly enlarged fryer plant in June, 1958. Ford Wonder Bread trucks are parked in a vaguely circular shape in the Continental Baking Co.'s vast parking lot on Sprague Ave. They would make deliveries of freshly baked Wonder Bread and other Continental products to local stores. A Beachcraft T-34, owned by the McChord Flying Club, is being wheeled into a T-shaped hangar at the South Tacoma Airport on September 9, 1958. An unidentified man in a checkered shirt and cap is maneuvering the airplane by a wing while Frank Bly is pushing with his hands on the propeller. Another parked aircraft can be glimpsed in the adjacent hangar space. Mr. Bly would build a hangar at the South Tacoma Airport in the late '50s. ca. 1926. A new 1926 Moon Jubilee 6-60 grinds up the steep So. K Street hill, showing off the strength of the new automobile. The Moon Jubilee was created to celebrate 20 years of automobile manufacturing by the Moon Motor Co. (1905-1929) of St. Louis, Mo. The vehicle, which sold for under $1,000, had European styling with a Continental motor. The local agent for Moon cars was the Bye Thompson Motor Sales Co., 3320 So. G St. The So. K St. hill, heading north from Center St., was often used to test the prowess of new cars. This portion of the road closed around 1960. ca. 1926. Men gather along the side of the road to cheer on the 1926 Moon Jubilee 6-60 as it powers its way up the So. K St. hill. The Moon Jubilee was manufactured in 1926 to celebrate 20 years of car manufacturing by the Moon Motor Co. of St. Louis, Mo. The automobile, according to advertising at the time, featured European styling adapted to American driving needs and sold for under $1,000. The dealer for the automobile in Tacoma was the Bye Thompson Motor Co., R. Bye Thompson president, at 3320 So. G St. The So. K St. Hill climb started at Center St. and headed north. Alan Buchan and his large staff of delivery truck drivers posed outside the Buchan's Baking Company bakery at 3802 Yakima Avenue South on October 11, 1958. The Buchan family had been in the bakery business in western Washington since 1913. The Buchan bakery in Tacoma opened in 1955 when they purchased the Morning Fresh Bakery at the corner of 38th and Yakima Avenue South. The building was originally built in 1919. The patriarch of the Buchan family business became a baker at the age of 14 in his native Scotland. The bakery was known for their "Bonnie Good Bread Baked in Tacoma" which was made of the choicest Northwest wheat and enriched with protein and vitamins. The Tacoma Buchan's was owned and operated by Alan G. Buchan; it closed in 1968 and the building has since been demolished. (Photograph ordered by Buchan's Baking Co.) TPL-9897

Four new and old GMC trucks parked outside of Turner Towing on June 24, 1961. The tow trucks are ready to assist travelers with their automobile troubles. Each truck is clearly marked with the company's phone number, MA7-0077, and company symbol, a dragon with the words "White Drag-In" written on the truck doors. A fleet of six new International Harvester trucks on display at Dougherty & Zion, logging and general contractors, 3410 Lincoln Avenue, on July 28, 1962. Extra wheels are loaded on top along with the hitch. These International Harvester units were to be used for hauling massive logs from various logging operations. A look at the new lighted car lot belonging to Walker Chevrolet on April 24, 1964. The 40,000 sq.ft. lot is packed with Chevrolet trucks and automobiles, both new and used. Walker Chevrolet would be welcoming the Tacoma Giants with a "giant" opening celebration. A half-page ad in the May 1, 1964, News Tribune indicated that autographed free baseballs as well as many other prizes would be given away. Walker Chevrolet had been at its Division Ave. location since 1934. In the picture's background are the Tacoma Bible Presbyterian Church and on Tacoma Ave. So., the Romanesque First Presbyterian Church. (TNT ad 5-1-64, p. A-4, B-2)

ca. 1925. The wheels are falling off an old pickup truck. Another truck with built-up wooden sides is parked in front of the broken down truck; it has a rope dragging behind it and it appears to have been towing something. What is attached to the rope is blocked from view by the pole. (WSHS)

Four uniformed drivers stand beside their Griffin-Galbraith Fuel Co. delivery trucks outside company headquarters days before Christmas, 1965. Advertised as Tacoma's complete heating specialists, Griffin-Galbraith Fuel provided oil, coal and wood heating oils in addition to furnace sales and service. The company's radio dispatched fuel oil trucks could be utilized for speedier service. Established in 1889 as Griffin Transfer Co., and later known as Griffin Fuel Co., by 1965, the company was listed in the City Directory as Griffin-Galbraith Fuel Co. Raudenbush Motor Co. Mrs. DesLys with Whippet. Raudenbush Motor Co. was an automobile dealer located at 314 Puyallup Ave. Mrs. Norah DesLys was the vice president of the Bon-Des-Lys Candy Makers, 2407 Pacific Ave. The Whippet automobile was manufactured from 1926-1931 by Willys Overland. On June 4, 1927, 25 year old actress and entertainer Norah Elizabeth Deslys married Tacoma candy manufacturer John T. Bond. She gave up the stage, after 18 years, to work with her husband in their recently incorporated Bon-Des-Lys (invented from the compound of both last names) candy company. Both Norah and her performance partner, her sister Essie, would maintain a home in Tacoma as well as Hollywood. (TNT 6/6/1927, pg.5) (WSHS)

K St. For years Tacoma drivers tested the stamina of their cars and the grit of the driver by motoring up the K St. hill, from Center St. due north, straight uphill. The road was closed in 1960. Inter-city Auto Freight started up in March 1938 with just two trucks and no facilities. They primarily do hauling between Seattle and Tacoma, but they have done heavy hauling throughout the state. On February 8, 1945, a flatbed truck with an extra long load was parked in front of Tacoma GMC Truck Co. at the corner of East C and Puyallup Ave. East. The 60 foot long retort was being moved by Inter-City Auto Freight. Inter-city Auto Freight was founded in March 1938 with just two trucks and no facilities. They primarily did hauling between Seattle and Tacoma, but they had done heavy hauling throughout the state. They had set up ideal facilities, including having their own railroad siding which facilitated unloading, storage and distribution. John H. Galbraith was president of both Inter-City Auto Freight and Tacoma GMC Truck Co. Born in So. Dakota, Mr. Galbraith was prominent in Tacoma/Pierce County in both the lumber and transportation businesses, and was mayor of Eatonville for 23 years, resigning in 1941. He died in 1960 at the age of 70.
