A Turner tow truck is lifting a big freighter on its towing rig. The freighter truck is pulling a trailer behind its regular load. The Turner truck cab has a dragon painted on the driver's door and words, "Call Turner, White Drag-In". Turner Towing was located at 2620 Pacific Avenue in Tacoma. TPL-7943

Close up of crumpled and twisted Medosweet Dairy truck after impact with a train on February 27, 1947. A police car, 1946 Ford model, can be seen in the background. The accident occurred at 10:05 in the morning on a private crossing opposite the entrance to Chicago Ave. in the Lakeview district south of the Tacoma city limits. This photograph was taken minutes after the accident. Medosweet route supervisor Alex McBeath Jr, 32, was killed while riding in the passenger seat. Driver William J. Velacich was seriously injured. In June of 1927, Seattlite and frequent Tacoma visitor Esther Landstrom (in coat) was pictured with her new Willys-Knight 70-A coupe in front of the First Presbyterian Church at 20 Tacoma Avenue South. Her small dog stands on the running board. Her friend Dolly Wescott, a bookkeeper at Manley Motors, was at the wheel. Mrs. Landstrom had recently purchased her car from Manley Motor Company, 956-58 Fawcett Avenue, in Tacoma. Manley Motors were the authorized dealers of Overland, Willys-Knight, and Whippet automobiles. (TDL 6/19/1927, pg. G2) (WSHS)

A side view of a "Woody", a style of early station wagon with windows to the back of the automobile, three interior seats and the exterior under the windows covered in wood, except for the rear fenders. This automobile has the letters S.T.S.C. on the rear door for Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corporation, and the number 25 on the front door.

View of rear of truck painting lines. This photograph, taken on September 12, 1951, shows a rear view of a General Traffic Controls, Inc., truck which paints lines on city streets. Invented by Tacoma police officer, Carl Sohmer, the vehicle is on its way to Los Angeles for demonstrations before the National Institute of Traffic Engineers. There is an instrument board, chrome colored tank, and valve covered smaller tanks. Paint is possibly held in the large tank below the license plate. One or two color combinations of striping can be applied by regulating the panel board. Utilizing a two man crew, the guides are adjustable for 2-12 inch lines. (TNT 9-23-51, A-4)

James "Jim" Holroyd stands on the running board of an International Harvester truck owned by Holroyd Company, behind the door on the driver's side of the cab. The Holroyd Co. used durable International Harvester trucks to transport mixers, building materials, and concrete products. Seattle and Tacoma employees of Abar, Inc., form a long line in front of the store on Pacific Avenue on September 19, 1958. In addition, four delivery trucks stand ready to transport Abar products to their customers. Abar sold aluminum storm doors and windows and screens direct from the factory. Roy V. The parking lot at Owen Beach is filled with cars whose occupants are watching the water show provided by the Tacoma Fireboat. Among the vehicles appears to be the well-known Steve Gay '90s cable car. Small tugs circle the fireboat whose plumes of water arch over Commencement Bay. Water is blasted through mounted nozzles on the boat; the purpose would be to put out marine and waterfront fires. The display was part of the Kiwanis convention festivities held in August, 1958. Delivery. Carl Albertson (at left) and Dick Fenger are apparently exchanging paperwork regarding the delivery of Washington Iron Works' heavy duty equipment by Widing Transportation Co. in mid-November, 1969. Widing Transportation arranged for heavy hauling through several West Coast states and up to British Columbia by St. Johns Motor Express, a division of the company. Mr. Albertson was one of the top two drivers for Widing at the time. Mr. Fenger was the head of its heavy haul division. The large piece of equipment shown above has been identified by a reader as a portion of a "spar pole" used to pull logs up the hill to a landing where they would be loaded onto a logging truck. An unidentified man is partially obscured by the blast of steam as he is cleaning the exterior of the Widing Transportation truck to ready it for repairs on November 1, 1969. The truck was parked at a terminal in the 24000 block of Pacific Hwy. S., in the Midway area. The building shown above was called the "wash rack" which was used to clean and purify the tanks inside. An interested crowd gathers at the Kent Auto Marshaling complex on August 17, 1970, to see the Vert-A-Pak bulk compact carrier in action. It appears to be a unique way to transport new automobiles. Present in the group is C.E. Crippen, president of the Milwaukee Road, whose organization developed the automobile unloading center. The new vehicle boxcars system is limited at the moment to compact cars only, due to size requirements. The system was devised in joint planning by the Milwaukee Road and General Motors.
