New administration buildings and offices at Fort Lewis. Camp Lewis was built during WW I, on land given to the military as a gift. After the war, the camp fell into disrepair. In March of 1926, Congress passed a ten year building plan to revitalize several military posts, including Camp Lewis. In September of 1927, Camp Lewis was redesignated as Fort Lewis. During the Depression, the government embarked on a six year, five and a half million dollar development plan at Fort Lewis. Wooden structures were replaced by ones of brick, stucco and steel. Over 80 buildings were completed by the end of 1934, as well as new roads and water mains. Fort Lewis was ready to take its place as a major US installation. (T. Times 11/23/1934, pg. 1) TPL-8303

Troop B demonstrates some trick riding at Camp A. H. Hankins, the 1935 Washington National Guard encampment at Camp Murray. Three soldiers are head and shoulders above the rest on a single horse as they pose one atop another. Troop B is actually designated as the Headquarters Troop, 24th Cavalry Division, Washington National Guard and it is the oldest military organization in the state. Tacoma's famous Troop B demonstrates some trick riding at the 1935 Washington National Guard encampment at Camp Murray, Camp A.H. Hankins. Troop B is actually designated as the Headquarters Troop, 24th Cavalry Division, Washington National Guard and it is the oldest military organization in the state. Tacoma turned out in full force to welcome the marines and sailors from the U.S. Naval fleet during the big, colorful parade that was part of the July 1935 "Fleet Week" celebration. Tens of thousands viewed with patriotic pride Uncle Sam's best: the 1,700 sailors and marines and 2,500 Fort Lewis soldiers, R.O.T.C., and C.M.T.C. troops who marched in the joint naval and military four-mile parade. The Reserve Officers from Fort Lewis are pictured above marching down Broadway in front of buildings in the 900 block. The distinctive Bostwick building can be seen clearly in the right background. The Washington National Guard's annual encampment took place in the last 2 weeks of June, 1936. Given a different honorary name each year, the 1936 camp was named "Camp Wesley Lloyd" after the late Congressman. The first week was plagued with the heaviest rain since 1931.

The 1936 encampment was held the last two weeks of June and offered Guard members a chance to re-train and take part in military exercises.
