For the second November in a row, the Tahoma Guild of the Tacoma Orthopedic Association in 1947 set out "Wishing Candles" in many restaurants as a fund raiser for a much needed children's hospital in Tacoma. Fred Wheeler (left) and Charles McDonald congratulate each other as the two newly elected labor leaders for the Cooks, Waiters, Waitresses and Bartenders Local No. 61. The union held a special two day election, Wheeler was appointed the new Outside Business Representative and McDonald the local Secretary-Treasurer. The newly elected labor leaders will officially take over their duties on November 15, 1947.

Wild West Club was located in Crawford's Sea Grill Restaurant, a two story concrete blocks and glass, 275 person capacity building. Crawford's became very popular with Tacoma residents and tourists, especially after they added a unique terrace room in 1950. The Building and Hod Carriers union celebrated with an "Old Timers' Night". The union presented three union pioneers with honorary lifetime memberships. On Thursday October 9, 1947, the Tacoma Charter of Building Laborers and Hod Carriers honored three members with honorary life membership at a dinner in their union hall. D. L. McInnis became a member in 1916; Joe Collins in 1917; and Dan Avery , a member of the local in Denver, CO in 1888, helped establish the Tacoma chapter when he moved to Tacoma in 1905 and was present when it received its charter in 1911. Nearly 40 local Boy Scouts and scout masters helped the 1947 Community Chest campaign by posting pole cards along Tacoma streets to keep Tacoma citizens aware of the upcoming campaign. Here Russell Matthews, Lucien Gumm, Bob Wright and Scoutmasters S/Sgt. L.J. Keehley and Lt. J.A. Kruavica from Troop 102, McChord Field, put up placards in South Tacoma. In September of 1947 Tacoma boy scouts Bob Evans (left) and LeRoy Gruver returned from the World Jamboree which was held that year near Paris, France. The two scouts were greeted with a three-way handshake by their unidentified scout master as they disembark from their train at Union depot. Three two-man crews of painters work from platforms suspended on the south wall of the Elks Temple, 565 Broadway, in August of 1947. The temple, dedicated on February 22, 1916, was designed by E. Frere Champney. The staircase next to the building, that connects Broadway with Commerce St., is known as the Spanish steps, and were intended to serve as a fire escape for the building. The Elks Temple has fallen into disrepair, and its future is in question. TPL-8446

Children who have learned swimming under the Red Cross, American Red Cross, Mrs. Thomsen. A large group of boys stand in the pool at Lincoln High School watching while the instructor helps one of the boys learn how to float. Over 5,000 free lessons were given so far that summer. All instructors were trained at an American Red Cross safety institute. The free lessons were open to children from 8 to 17 years of age.

Here are the big winners in the 1947 Tacoma Poggie Club Father-Son-Daughter Salmon Derby held at Point Defiance on July 13th. At the left, Richard Sheriff holds his top prize bicycle while his dad, Johnny Sheriff holds their 18 lb. 13 oz. salmon. At the right are Judy Weller and her father C.J. (Bud) Weller. Eastern Star Convention at Armory. Mrs. Eva Holland Hamilton of Chicago is on the right. She was the Most Worthy Grand Matron of the General Grand Chapter and was a visitor throughout the 59th annual session of Order of the Eastern Star held in Tacoma in June 1947. Mrs. Stephen J. Chadwick of Olympia, a past Most Worthy Matron of the General Grand Chapter, was affectionately known as "the First Lady" in Washington Eastern Star. She is wearing an overblouse of lace and crochet.
