SIRLES-007 Front

  • Yard Birds, in the Chehalis/Centralia area, began as the Two Yard Birds Surplus in 1947. By 1958 it was known as Yard Birds, and in 1959 a sister store called Seamart was added in Olympia. Another Yard Birds store opened in Shelton in 1979. The firm was known for its eclectic merchandise and the very large bird statues out front. The last Yard Birds closed in 1995. circa 1971.

SIRLES-009 Front

  • Deception Pass is a narrow, tidal passage between Fidalgo Island on the north and Whidbey Island on the south in Skagit and Island counties. Capt. George Vancouver named it Port Gardner in 1792 not knowing that the channel was open at the west end. When Joseph Whidbey of his command found the western outlet, Vancouver renamed it Deception Passage, because he had been deceived as to its nature, and named the island after his assistant who found the mistake. circa 1930.

  • When explorers Lewis & Clark were preparing for their return trip most supplies had been depleted, so they set up a Salt House in Seaside to cure and preserve a meat supply for their journey. The area became the place for many western pioneers to vacation, with the first guest house opening in 1850. It is still a popular tourist destination today. circa 1965.

SIRLES-022 Front

The Monroe Street Bridge, pictured here, is a city landmark in Spokane, Washington. It was completed in 1911, and is adorned with western design motifs, including cast concrete bison skulls. The bridge was entirely rebuilt, except for the central span starting in 2003. It was reopened in 2005. circa 1960.

Entertainer Bing Crosby attended Gonzaga, and raised money for the library pictured here, which was dedicated to the Crosby family on November 3, 1957. After the library was moved to the Foley Center in 1992, this building was turned into the Crosby Student Center, and it still houses the Crosbyana Room and its memorabilia--including gold records, trophies, photographs, scrapbooks and an Oscar. circa 1960.

  • This building, constructed from 1936 to 1938, and expanded in 1977, is the third to house the Oregon state government in Salem. Two former capitol buildings were destroyed by fire, one in 1855 and the other in 1935. A lot of the interior and exterior of the building is made of marble, and it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. circa 1960.
