The ultra-modern store located at 942 Commerce St. (alternate address 935-41 Broadway) featured salmon-colored terra cotta applied to the exterior with neon signage. Harry P. Cain, future Mayor of Tacoma and U.S. Senator, appeared in the Tacoma Little Theater production of "The Animal Kingdom" under the direction of his wife, Marjorie Dils Cain. Mr. Cain, who starred as Tom Collier, is pictured in this March, 1937, print speaking to the woman on the stairs. He portrayed a small-time publisher with a genuine sense of humor. Other cast members included Mrs. Salem Nourse, Salem Nourse, Uwarda Egley, Claude Brennan, Mrs. Galvin Hopper, Gordon Tuell, Mrs. Thomas Turner and Merle Benedict. Showroom of Hopper-Kelly Company of Tacoma, household electrical appliances dealers, featuring kitchen stoves and space heaters. A new department had been added to the expanded store at 1145 Broadway. They handled coal, wood and oil circulating ranges, including the Olympic and Great Western banquet lines.

ca. 1937. A frame shelters gathered in a large circle at Roy's model hop farm. Pictures ordered by Tacoma National Bank. The 41 acre hop farm was owned by James E. & J. W. Feak. The shelters are possibly intended to house migrant workers that pick the hops. Farm also pictured in series D5210. In 1936-37, the County was involved in improving and deepening Lacamas Creek. The work was not sufficient and the creek flooded the Feak's hop lands. In 1938, the Feaks sued the County for over $30,000 in damages.

ca. 1937. Independent Bible Church, circa 1937. The pastor of the church was the Rev. Roy T. Brumbaugh. This new church was created when Rev. Brumbaugh split from the First Presbyterian Church. Four hundred and sixty-five members signed up with Dr. Brumbaugh to join the Independent Church. He typified his members as "fundamentalists" who opposed the organization of the Presbyterian Church. The Bible Church met at the Scottish Rite Temple, 5 So. G St., which it purchased in 1937. In 1943, the church dropped the Independent and became the Tacoma Bible Church. (filed with Argentum)

ca. 1935. Throughout the mid-1930s, Yelm's irrigation water system was subsidized by the Works Progress Administration, WPA. The government furnished labor and much of the lumber for flumes to irrigate farm land. Ross Houston had a contract in 1935 to install a wooden water flume on this farm near Yelm. At the same time, his Houston Treated Wood and Fabricated Wood Products were installing prefabricated wooden street gutters in Tacoma.

On March 2, 1937, the Tacoma Times Spring Fashion section hit the newstands, featuring two couples modeling the latest in suits and coats from Klopfenstein's, Inc. Gathered around the piano at the Winthrop Hotel were Nancy Hawks in a classic Rothmoor coat, Don Baker in a Hart-Schaffner suit and Irene Tollefson, also in Rothmoor. On March 2, 1937, the Tacoma Times ran their Spring Fashion section, featuring two couples modeling the newest styles of suits and coats from Klopfenstein's Inc. Pictured left to right at the Winthrop Hotel were Nancy Hawks, of Dallas Texas, in a classic Rothmoor coat, Don Baker in a Hart-Schaffner suit, Irene Tollefson in Rothmoor and Vic Vine in Hart Schaffner. In November of 1937, Arnold Leverenz was photographed playing the organ at Ted Brown Music Co., 1121-23 Broadway. Ted Brown was in business at this location from 1934-2001. Mr. Leverenz was a noted local musician. He provided background music at the Pantages during the silent film era and was a featured performer at Steve's Gay Nineties in the 1950's. The unidentified young women in this photograph from June, 1938 are probably the drill team from the Knute Rockne Lodge, Daughters of Norway. Over 1,000 members of the Sons of Norway and the Daughters of Norway, representing lodges in Washington, Oregon,California, Idaho, Alaska, and British Columbia, attended the four day convention in Tacoma from June 23 - 28. The drill team members, and their little "mascot," are attired in jodhpurs and holding what appear to be polo mallets. The male team leader in the center is wearing a United States Marines uniform. Hatasu Dancers, June of 1938. Large group of women in hall, attired in matching costumes. The Hatasu Temple was a group name used by Daughters of the Nile. Queen Hatasu was an Egyptian monarch. The Daughters of the Nile are the female offshoot of the Shriners, or Masons. The group was founded in 1913 in Seattle. The Hatasu #1 Temple still meets in Seattle. The annual session of the Supreme Temple of the Daughters of the Nile was held in Tacoma June 6-10, 1938. It was the first convention of this group to be held in Tacoma since 1925.
