Float for the Tacoma Retail Trade Bureau with two children in a boat with sails made out of strings of flowers being pulled by a small vehicle at the 1954 Daffodil Parade.
This float, apparently entitled "Daffodil Daze," was decorated with three giant daffodils and a multitude of blossoms. Standing on the float is believed to be 1972 Daffodil Festival Queen, Paula Achziger. The parade itself has not been identified; it possibly could be the Seafair Parade which was held in late July of 1972.
Float constructed for the celebration of the P.W.A. $2,700,000 grant to begin construction on a bridge across the Narrows. Standing on a truck bed, construction workers display a sign: " We Pledge our Cooperation - Structural Iron Workers Union Local 114." 1938 Daffodil Parade. The Rotary Club, Tacoma #8, float took fourth place in the Civic Club Division. It was one of 23 floats entered in the 5th annual daffodil parade. Adams Brake Service building in background. The morning of the parade dawned clear and cloudless, and blessed with the appearance of that rarest of Northwest spring visitors, the sun. Two young boys, dressed in shorts and sporting skinned knees, pose on their decorated bicycles at the first annual Bicycle Race Meet and Parade held August 5, 1938 at the Stadium Bowl. The boys are tentatively identified as Junior Holquist, age 6, from Sprague St. and Bob Lasham, age 5, from 2709 S "J" St. The meet was jointly sponsored by the Tacoma Times and the Parks Department.

Celebrating P.W.A. funding to begin Narrows Bridge construction, a parade of automobiles and motorcycles are seen crossing a bridge. More than 500 automobiles and trucks participated in the event organized by a committee of local business districts. The parade began at Union Station and wound through Tacoma streets until it reached the Stadium Bowl where a crowd of 5,000 listened to speeches from local dignitaries. (T. Times, 7/1/1938)

More than 500 automobiles and trucks participated in the parade celebrating the P.W.A. $2,700,000 grant to erect the Narrows bridge. Two unidentified men observe the damage done to a power boat during the 2nd Annual Tacoma Yacht Club Daffodil Festival Regatta held on April 3, 1938. The boat is most likely the "Bo-Peep," captained by Bennett O. Swain, which was damaged in a collision during the 24 vessel race. Rain, wind and tide contributed to the accident which resulted when Capt. Norton Clapp's "Carmelita" passed the "Bo-Peep." The passing was close and the "Bo-Peep" was drawn into the "Carmelita's" wake, smacking the "Carmelita's" stern. The "Bo-Peep" was damaged on the bow above the water line, but continued on, and eventually won the race. (T. Times 4/4/1938, pg 1)

The Sixth Annual Daffodil Parade was held on Saturday April 1, 1939. There were 24 floats and 13 marching bands in the parade. It stretched out for almost two miles, and took 40 minutes to pass. In this photograph, the float built by the Lincoln Citizen's Club, representing the Lincoln business district, passes the Sherman Hotel at 1546 Broadway. With its daffodil model of the first Tacoma Narrows Bridge, this float placed second in the "organizations" catagory. (T. Times)

Children pose with their decorated bicycles at the Stadium Bowl, the terminus of the August 5, 1938 bicycle parade sponsored by the Tacoma Times and the Park Recreation Department of the Metropolitan Park District. Some of the more creative entries are a covered wagon and an airplane. The parade started at 2:30p.m. at 8th and Commerce, as hundreds of children wound through downtown streets and on to the Stadium Bowl to the cheering of thousands of proud parents. Prizes were given for the best decorated entries, funniest costumed rider, craziest looking bicycle and oldest bicycle. The top prizes were three 1939 Schwinn "World" bicycles with all the latest accessories- knee-action, motorcycle-type kick stand, rear vision mirrors and fore wheel brakes. (T. The "Famous Reichmuth Family" plays Swiss tunes for the crowd from the back of a flatbed truck during the Golden Jubilee Parade, July 22, 1939. Their regular location to perform was the Swiss Village at 1318 Broadway, where they played old-time Swiss and Scandinavian tunes for the dancers' enjoyment. The parade entry was also sponsored by Whitworth Fuel Co., 2513 No. Proctor, and Oil Sales & Service Co., 764 Commerce St. A lone child stands in the street beside the truck. The crowd can be seen in the background, 5-6 layers deep.

Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939, celebrating Washington's fifty years of statehood. The "Swiss Colony" entered this float in the parade. Its floral decorations include replicas of the United States and the Swiss flag on the front. A model of the Alps takes up most of the float. Two accordion players and several people in native costumes populate the float. It is accompanied by four girls in Swiss outfits walking beside the float. The crowd along the parade route, several people deep, can be seen in the background. The front row sits in chairs, while those in back stand or perch on the buildings for a better view.

This float, created by KVI Broadcasting, takes a nostalgic look back to the time when the "news" consisted of two women visiting over their backyard fence. The structure on the float is "Ye Olde Woode Shedde."

The float featured a gilded youth as Aladdin, an electric lamp, four maidens in huge jars and a smoke machine. Spectators shield their heads from July sun with their Jubilee hats. This floral tribute, inhabited by young people performing various kinds of work, was contributed to the July 22, 1939 Golden Jubilee Parade by the "National Youth Administration (NYA)." The program was a Works Progress Administration offshoot, heavily supported by Eleanor Roosevelt and intended to educate and start young people out in the workforce. Instituted in June of 1935, it covered youths ages 16-25. Those wishing to remain in school were given part-time jobs and those out of school were given on the job training. The program was abolished in 1943.

This float was entered in the July 22, 1939 Golden Jubilee Parade by the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce. In the back is a floral cornucopia with a young woman in a white or pastel dress sitting at the opening. Two other young women ride on the float and the driver's upper half, wearing a Jubilee hat, can be seen between the pair and the cornucopia, beside a bench. The float has a replica of the Narrows Bridge on the front. Around the sides are placards featuring Tacoma's accomplishments, either current or in the works in 1939, "The Nation's First Air Base" (McChord), "Portland Differential," "Highway Development," "Hylebos Waterway Development," "McNeil Island Purchased by Government," and "Tacoma Transportation Company."
