This float was entered in the July 22, 1939 Golden Jubilee Parade by the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce. In the back is a floral cornucopia with a young woman in a white or pastel dress sitting at the opening. Two other young women ride on the float and the driver's upper half, wearing a Jubilee hat, can be seen between the pair and the cornucopia, beside a bench. The float has a replica of the Narrows Bridge on the front. Around the sides are placards featuring Tacoma's accomplishments, either current or in the works in 1939, "The Nation's First Air Base" (McChord), "Portland Differential," "Highway Development," "Hylebos Waterway Development," "McNeil Island Purchased by Government," and "Tacoma Transportation Company."

Float #15 in the July 22, 1939 Golden Jubilee Parade seems to be constructed completely of foil. The float, entered by several service organizations, emphasizes their support programs for young people, "Dedicated to Youth." It has an undersea theme. A fish is pulling an unoccupied seashell throne, while waves lap at the sides of the float. The circles bear the names of sponsors: Rotary International, Gyro Club, Lions Club, Young Men's Business Club (YMBC) and Kiwanis International.

Float #19 was submitted to the July 22, 1939 Golden Jubilee Parade by the Lumber Industries. A replica of our beloved Mount Rainier sits ringed by old growth forest. Tacoma was still holding out for the name Mount Tacoma in 1939. At the back of the float is a model house, built from wood cut and processed in the Northwest.

A replica of the Narrows Bridge dominates this float entered by Pierce County in the Golden Jubilee Parade, held July 22, 1939 to celebrate 50 years of Washington's statehood. The bridge would connect Tacoma with the remainder of Pierce County lying on the Olympic Peninsula. Two people sit in chairs alongside the bridge, a native American in full headdress in front and a bathing beauty behind. The first Narrows Bridge, later infamous as the "Galloping Gertie," was opened to traffic July 1, 1940. It was destroyed in a windstorm just over four months later in November of 1940. TPL-6195 (T. Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939, celebrating Washington's fifty years of statehood. A "beary" interesting truck, offered by Buck & Bowers Tire & Oil Co., appears to be pulling a miniature truck, entered by Cavanaugh Lumber. The front truck has a bare tree in the back bed, in which a person in a bear suit with a bear mask is sitting. A bear's head also adorns the hood. A large banner on the side of the truck "We're bears for service." The miniature truck is labelled Cavanaugh Lumber, "Cavanaugh has a plan!" Buck & Bowers was located at 114 Puyallup Ave. They were the distributors of Dayton automobile tires, sunset gasoline, automobile accessories and farm equipment. Parker J. Buck was president. Cavanaugh Lumber Co. was located at 1423 Puyallup Ave. Cecil C. Cavanaugh was the owner. They sold lumber, building materials, paints, and builders' hardware.

Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939. Covered wagon bearing words "Steilacoom 1854" being pulled by a team of four horses. It is being driven by two people in pioneer clothing. There is a man running alongside wagon with a camera in his hand. Steilacoom sent three floats and the city band to the Golden Jubilee Parade which commemorated fifty years of statehood.

Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939, celebrating Washington's fifty years of statehood. This float entered in the parade by R.E. Anderson & Co. offers Washington best wishes on fifty years of progress, statehood and dependability. It is topped by a buckskinned frontiersman and a maiden in a sleeveless white dress with flowers in her hair. They pose for a picture as the floats line up waiting for the parade to start. R.E. Anderson was a real estate company that also dealt in loans, rentals, insurance and bonds. In 1939, they were located on the 4th floor of the Fidelity Building, 949-55 Broadway.

Golden Jubilee Parade on July 22, 1939, celebrating Washington's fifty years of statehood. Evergreen boughs cover a wagon pulled by a Metropolitan Park District truck in this tribute to the jewel of Tacoma's park system, Pt. Defiance Park. In front of the standing map of the park on the wagon is something one would hope to never run into in the park- a bear. Actually bears were housed at the Pt. Defiance zoo and two had escaped the previous year. One of them actually roamed the North End for several weeks.

The Commerce Street Dog Parade was held on April 22, 1939. A young girl with her puppy, tagged number 73, receives a Tacoma policeman's admiration. Another girl holds her sleeping puppy and does not seem to approve of the attention. Fairyland and Christmas parade for children, the day after Thanksgiving, November 29, 1935. Four clowns ride on a float with the sign " Merry Christmas, Happy New Year." This is possibly the "mechanical clown" float referred to in the news stories. Crowd of spectators stand at 9th and Broadway watching the float pass by. Governor's Review of National Guard at Fort Lewis. Large crowd of spectators gathered on a hill to observe the largest military review up to that time. Flag bearers followed by military unit on parade grounds. Governors from Washington, Oregon and Montana were present to watch 14,000 regular army and national guard troops pass in formal review. This is possibly the 161st regiment, Washington National Guard, from the 81st Infantry Brigade. (T. Times, 8-21-37, p. 1, 8-23-37, p. 1)

On August 29, 1936, Bremerton's Assistant Fire Chief Ernest Yett, left, and Fire Chief S.B. "Skippy" Lent posed with four unidentified girls and their favorite dolls prior to the Bremerton Pet Parade. Over 264 youngsters marched in the parade sponsored by the Retail Merchant's Association. They carried dolls, wore costumes or were accompanied by their pets. Fire Chief Lent would retire in 1936, after 26 years of service with the department; 11 as a volunteer and 16 years as Fire Chief. Assistant Chief Lett was the only man in the city eligible to test for the vacant Chief position. (Bremerton Sun 8/31/1936, pg. 1; 12/12/1936, pg.1 - Lent retirement).

This group of elaborately costumed Tacomans took part in the annual Toyland Parade on the morning of November 27, 1936 through the streets of downtown Tacoma. The first float in the parade carried Santa Claus in a giant sled pulled by 2 white reindeer. The Toyland Parade was the official opening for the Christmas shopping season. (T. Times 11-28-1936 p.11)
In one of its oddest parade turns, the Tacoma Safety Council presented the "Horror Parade," also called the Tacoma Safety Council Safety Show parade. The parade was intended to serve as a tragic reminder for reckless and careless drivers. The first prize winner was this wrecked automobile in tow with a dummy laying across seat. The sign says "Oh Why ! Didn't I Get My Brakes Repaired Yesterday?" Children on bicycles watch the macabre parade which traversed the main streets of Tacoma for two hours. (T. Times 2/26/1937, pg. 1)

The Tacoma Safety Council Safety Show Parade, also called the "Horror Parade." The parade visually showed the effects of careless and reckless driving to the citizens of Tacoma. Fairyland and Christmas parade for children, November 29, 1935. Marching band at corner of 9th and Broadway. This large band is unidentified, it is one of three in the parade. The bands hailed from the Musicians' Union, Stadium and Lincoln High Schools. The Bostwick Block can be seen at the right, the Bostwick Hotel on the upper floors with the "Credit Dentist" Walter Whetstone below.
