Capacity of the Tacoma plant for production of chlorine and caustic soda was being increased 30%. Pennsalt had been granted a federal certificate of necessity for $445,450. As of March 1951, power hearings brought out the fact that chlorine and caustic sodas were ranked among the top poriority defense items, being used in aircraft manufacture and at the Hanford A-bomb plant, as well as suppllying local chemical plants and domestic needs. South Tacoma Motor Company was co-sponsor of the 1951 Tacoma Soap Box Derby in Tacoma with Walker Chevrolet and The News Tribune. The first place winner of the derby, Richard Johnson of Sumner, represented Tacoma at the national finals in Akron, Ohio, August 12th, and won an all-expense paid trip to Akron plus a $5,000 four-year college scholarship. The race was held July 15, 1951, on Derby Hill, South 38th Street, just east of the baseball park. Duane Hopper came in second and Paul Meyer was third. Duane and Paul won Schwinn bicycles. Roger Gotteland of Seattle, French Consular Agent, speaking in Tacoma at the unveiling of a replica of the Statue of Liberty at the Washington State Historical Society. The replica was presented to the Washington State Historical Society by the Mount Rainier Council of Boy Scouts, comprising part of King and Pierce counties. Russell, Inc., had a booth at the Japanese Trade Fair held in the University of Washington Hec Edmundson pavilion. Several Tacoma concerns were represented by booths at the fair. Eleven Japanese newsmen were on hand to cover the fair for their papers. Russell, Inc., was managed by J.A. Milliam and the company handled exports in Tacoma. Launching the "Historic" at J.M. Martinac Shipbuilding Corporation. The new tuna clipper was built for Oliver Verissimo and Assoc. of San Diego. She was powered by a 615-hp Enterprise diesel, two 150-hp GM diesels, 120-kw auxiliaries and she had refrigeration capacity of 240 tons. On June 7, 1951, Mayor John Anderson officially opened the new Sears, Roebuck parking lot by snipping the red ribbon. The three level garage was located directly adjacent to the main Sears store with 365 feet fronting Market St. Each level opened to a street: the first level opened to Court D, second level to 13th, and the upper story had its entrance on Market. Apparently the third level was already packed with cars and drivers were advised to use the second level. The concrete facility had a 500-car capacity.
