1937 Engagement portrait of Shannon Smith and Dr. William McMahon. The couple is sitting in directors chairs beside a round, metal patio table on a wooden deck. A decorative lattice screen and raised flower beds are behind them. The couple's engagement was formally announced on September 17, 1937, by Miss Smith's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Raleigh. In June of 1937, the Coast Guard Patrol Boat #402 was assigned permanently to Tacoma's Harbor. Seven members of the crew posed on the deck of their ship. They are, front row left to right, Chief Boatswain's mate T.J. Firth- commanding, Chief Machinist's Mate Floyd L. Harmon, J.J. Pinton- Seaman First Class, A.E. Davis, Seaman 2nd Class and ship's cook. Back Row: Jacob Rockov, Fireman First Class, I. W. Tucker-Boatswain's mate, A.E. Godfrey- Machinists mate First Class. The CG 402 was built on the Atlantic Coast and had previously been a rum chaser during Prohibition. She was the fastest craft in Tacoma. (T. Times 6-3-1937, pg. 8).

Seventh from the left has been tentatively identified as Leah Kelley. The junior high was eleven years old at the time of the photograph; it served the South Tacoma area student population.

Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts and adult leaders off to the National Scout Jamboree in Washington D.C., June 30th to July 9th, 1937. The 17 boys and leaders came from Tacoma, Puyallup, Olympia, Centralia and Chehalis. The group left early, and made side trips to Yellowstone, Chicago, Niagara Falls and New York City on their way to the Jamboree, which was expected to draw around 30,000 Scouts. While the scouts were in the national capital, there was a laundry strike. Tacoma dads received telegrams imploring, "Dad, I'm broke. Laundry strike. Send me ten please. Rush." Mayor George Smitley, center, at meeting of the Young Men's Business Club during the planning of the organization's "Air Circus" event. Man on the left is Arthur A. Cook, secretary of the YMBC, and the one on the right is M.J. M'Caslin, chairman of the Aviation Committee. The big show, featuring races, stunts, contests, acrobatic flying, bombing contests and parachute jumps, would occur on June 13, 1937, at the Mueller-Harkins field. Party at Ed Short's home. Happy guests are pictured in this June of 1937 photograph. Mr. Short was a feature writer and columnist for the Tacoma Times newspaper. He was the first City Editor of the paper back in the early 1900's. (T.Times, Society).

Mayor George A. Smitley shakes hands with J. Lee Kress at his office in (Old) City Hall while congratulating the businessman on the opening of his new Malt Shop in the Bostwick Building. Young Mr. Kress' new Tacoma establishment would be located at the front of the flatiron building. It would serve 40 in both private booths and counter service. The Kress Malt Shop is owned solely by Mr. Kress and will be union operated. Mr. Kress was educated in Tacoma schools and has had much experience in the food and fountain service business. Mayor George A. Smitley hands J. Lee Kress a letter at his office in (Old) City Hall congratulating the businessman on the opening of his new Malt Shop in the Bostwick Building. Mayor Smitley is a personal friend of Mr. Kress; the letter welcomed him back to Tacoma and thanked him for the improvements to the area. He wished Mr. Kress a successful career. Mayor George A. Smitley and businessman J. Lee Kress in a July 1, 1937, photograph taken at (Old) City Hall. Mr. Kress, a personal friend of the mayor's, was opening a new Malt Shop in the Bostwick Building. The men are holding a letter from the mayor that welcomes Mr. Kress back to the Tacoma area. On July 8, 1937 Douglas Gonyea, Martha Turner, Margaret McGinnis and Robert Prins sipped bottled sodas in front of the check room at the King Roller Skating Rink, 2707-13 Pacific Avenue. Martha and Margaret were hosting a roller skating party in honor of Betty Doud of Los Angeles, who was visiting her aunt and uncle in Tacoma. Nearly 100 Tacoma teenagers attended the party. In 1939, Robert Prins, Stadium High school graduate and junior at the University of Washington, was sent to Hollywood by Warner Bros. studio to do a screen test. He was discovered by a talent scout while performing in a play at U of W. As a highschooler, Prins became an actor after a dare by Stadium dramatics instructor Miss Alberta Frances Black. He appeared in two Warner Brothers movies in 1940, "Flight Angels" and "Money and the Woman". (T.Times,7/10/1937, p 10; T. Times 4/1/1939, pg. 1). TPL-10464

Snapped in the act of sharing a bottle of pop, two young people sneak a romantic moment during the July 8, 1937 roller skating party in honor of Betty Doud of Los Angeles. Miss Doud was paying a visit to her aunt and uncle in Tacoma that summer. Nearly 100 teenagers were invited to the King Roller Skating Rink, 27th & Pacific, including the above twosome in sweaters. When Betty Doud, of Los Angeles, came to Tacoma in July, 1937 to visit her aunt and uncle, Margaret McGinnis and Martha Turner arranged a roller skating party in her honor. Upwards of 100 Tacoma teenagers met at the King Roller Skating Rink at So. 27th and Pacific for an evening of fun. In a romantic moment caught by a photographer from the Richards Studio two young people share a bottle of pop through two straws, their heads almost touching. (T.Times 7-10-1937 p.6)

This was the fitting room for customers, doing double duty as the waiting room. Attached chairs, Art Deco frieze, plants in wall niches, Modernistic chrome tube-frame chairs, foot rests and display tables.
