The Bremerton Sun ran the first official married portrait of Mrs. Margaret Ann Pease, formerly Adams, in their April 16, 1937 issue. Miss Adams had become the bride of Jack H. Pease the previous Wednesday evening. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Adams and the groom was the son of Mrs. Edna K. Pease. (Bremerton Sun 04-16-1937, pg. 3).

In this photograph from the June 4, 1937 Tacoma Times newspaper, Berthold A. Prengel watches as his four year old granddaughter Patricia McLean zooms down the slide that he built for her in his yard. Mr. Prengel, a retired cabinet-maker, used his ingenuity and scrap lumber that he salvaged from the tideflats to convert his backyard at 4318 East N Street into a playground for "Pat" and her friends. In addition to the slide, the four year old can play on a wooden ferris wheel, a merry-go-round, and a teeter-totter; her grandfather also built several carnival skill games. The toys are all painted bright cheery red, orange, yellow and blue and are emblazoned with the name "PAT." (T. Times 6/4/1937, pg.3)

Each year the Tennis Club held a Presidents' Tea to open the summer season. It was sponsored by the board members to honor all past presidents of the club. In 1937, it was held on May 20th. Pictured pouring is Mrs. Welles Wheeler. Standing are Mrs. Grant S. Hicks, Mrs. W. S. Anderson, Mrs. D.J. Young and Mrs. James Morris (order uncertain.) (T.Times 5/22/1937, pg. 9).

St. Regis' floating log dump as viewed in early May of 1937. Docked nearby is the Japanese vessel, "Gyokoh Marudairen." In the distance are prominent city structures: the towers of City Hall, Pierce County Courthouse, and Central School and the Art-Deco styled Medical Arts Building. The floating logs will eventually be pulped and the product shipped via water to St. Regis' eastern paper mills and exported to foreign countries, including Japan. A stunning, 1937 Mill Studio model jukebox made by Mills Novelty Co., Chicago, is installed in front of star-studded drapery at Kipper's Korner, on U.S. Highway 99, seven miles south of Tacoma. Cafe patrons can "Dance to the world's best music". Sound adjustment dials and High Fidelity Color Expressors provide the highest quality "big band" sound for dancing. Each of the 12 - 78 rpm records inside the wood-grain cabinet is affixed to its own turntable by a ferris wheel mechanism which is activated by the push-button selection dial.

On May 7, 1937, Mrs. Avis Christian posed with her 30 piece harmonica band at Oakland School, 3319 So. Adams St. The band, composed of Oakland students, performed the folk songs of Stephen Foster; strains such as "Old Folks at Home" and "Beautiful Dreamer." Mayor George Smitley (R) shakes hands with El Haren, newspaper astrologer, during his visit to Tacoma. El Haren's column was carried by the Tacoma Times for a limited time; the Times ran this photo on May 12, 1937. Free daily advice was dispensed by America's "most celebrated astrologer" with replies printed in the Times. For $1.00 and a 6 cent self-addressed stamped envelope, El Haren provided a complete astrological reading and answered three questions free. If the reader chose to save money, he/she would be entitled to one free question using the Times coupon. The newspaper was apparently swamped with thousands of requests during the astrologer's short stay here. This faded sepia photograph is one taken of a luncheon held in honor of Anna Roosevelt Boettiger at the Hotel Winthrop in May, 1937. Mrs. Boettiger was the wife of Seattle Times publisher John Boettiger and the daughter of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. She is seated in the center next to the microphone, wearing a small striped dark hat and suit of "Eleanor Blue" with large corsage of roses and lilies. She is gazing downward at small notes in her hand in preparation for her speech to the Junior Women's Club. Seated next to Mrs. Boettiger is Sally Sicade, general chairman and toastmistress of the club. This was Mrs. Boettiger's first visit to Tacoma and she spoke highly of the northwest while addressing the 300 women in attendance. (T.Times, 5-19-37, p. 1, 9) ALBUM 1.
