Eddie Taylor, second baseman and manager of the 1937 Tacoma Tigers baseball team, connected for a double in his first at bat against Vancouver in the second game of a double header on Sunday May 2, 1937. He was the first batter in the first inning of the second game against the Vancouver Maple Leafs. The wooden stadium at 1302 South Sprague Avenue was filled with a capacity crowd. The Tigers won the first game 3-1, but lost the second 10-5. (T. Times 5/3/1937, pg. 11)
Bremerton dentist Dr. Renus Bender double checked the calendar, making sure that it was set for his ninth birthday, February 29, 1936. Although he was forty years old, he was born during a leap year, on a date that only rolls around every four years. Dr. Bender was born in Manette on February 29, 1896. His birthday was so rare that in the 20,527 births registered in Kitsap County from 1890-1936, his was the only birth on February 29th. (Bremerton Sun 02/28/1936, pg. 1).

Washington National Guard encampment, "Camp Wesley Lloyd." Each year the Wa. National Guard conducted a training encampment. In June of 1936, it was "Camp Wesley Lloyd." During the engagement, officers were photographed using binoculars and site equipment to observe artillery. Another officer was plotting trajectory.

The clothes of most all of the children have short or no sleeves, with the exception of the boy wearing a sweatshirt or sweater with "who's afraid of the big bad wolf" imprinted on it.
In August of 1935, the west end of the Navy yard in Bremerton was known as the "Boneyard." Here unused or outdated ships rode at anchor, fastened together with intricate knots of cable. The white bow, visible in the interior of the group, was the USS Patoka. The Patoka, constructed in 1919, was outfitted with a distinctive stern mooring mast in 1924 for lighter-than-air craft. She was subsequently used as an operational and experimental base by three of the Navy's great dirigibles, USS Shenandoah (ZR-1) in 1924-1925, USS Los Angeles (ZR-3) in 1925-1932, and USS Akron (ZRS-4) in 1932. On Thursday July 30, 1936, hundreds of Tacomans watched the annual whaleboat race, put on by the sailors docked in Tacoma for Fleet Week. Thirteen-man crews from eight ships took part in the race, with the victory going to the men from the U.S.S. San Francisco. Led by coxswain Tommy Loughran, the men from the San Francisco completed the one mile course, begins at the Old Tacoma Dock and proceeds toward the City Waterway, in 9 minutes 55.5 seconds. Following time-worn custom, the coxswain of the winning crew was tossed overboard at the end of the race. (T. Times 7/31/1936, pg. 1 &3)

Retired in name only, Jacob W. Braman still reported to work everyday at the Braman Mill & Manufacturing Co. in Bremerton, the millworks that he ran with his son, J. W. Braman. He was photographed in June of 1936 measuring a corner knick-knack shelf on the counter of the shop. A cash register and wall calendars are in the background. He acted as business manager for the concern and its five employees, content not to put in a full eight hours a day during his retirement. He had spent more than 50 years in business; 30 of them in Bremerton operating millworks. He came to the city in 1906. (Bremerton Sun 7/18/1936, pg. 1).

In February of 1937, the planning committee for the Bremerton Ski Cruisers dance, to be held on the 26th of the month, posed for the Bremerton Sun newspaper in front of a large brick fireplace. The women are dressed in ski gear and two of the women are wearing jackets with the Club's emblem. W.L. Bundy pulled the whistle cord on Monday morning, August 5, 1935, at the St. Paul and Tacoma mill sending returning lumber mill employees back to work after the settlement of a 13 week walk out. By a vote of 1,391 to 97 the members of the Tacoma local Sawmill and Timber Workers' Union accepted the terms offered by the 22 Tacoma mills affected by the strike. The terms of the agreement included a 40 hour work week, an 8 hour day and time and one-half for overtime. (T.Times 8/5/1935, pg. 1)

Rehearsal for the Tacoma Elks sponsored musical program over CBS/KVI radio to raise funds for their annual "stocking fillers" benefit. Billy Carns, left, stocking filler chairman holds the script as George Johnson, violinist, and Joe Lento, guitarist, perform in front of the CBS microphone. Two sets of triplets at Tacoma General. Erna, Erma and Ernest Christensen, who were born in Tacoma on June 28, 1918 to Hulda and Gothard Christensen hold the triplets that were born to Genevieve Hartle on November 14, 1937. Because the babies were premature and quite small (the largest weighed only 4 pounds 7 ounces), the Christensens were asked to wear surgical gowns and masks for this picture. Mrs. Hartle, smiling said that her husband, William Hartle, seemed more shocked than she when he learned about the increased family. (T. Times 11/16/1937 p.1).

Sitting in a boatswain's chair, just a board slung in the loops of a bowline knot, he works at replacing burned out light bulbs and repairing defective wiring. Mike Cromoga, carpenter, artist, and daredevil, bites into a beer glass at the Valley Tavern. Tavern customers cringe and gasp, one woman screams. Cromoga is calm; he has eaten glass before--the first time in 1916. A reporter asks him how he does it? Cromoga explains that he chews the glass into a fine powder before swallowing. "It just takes nerve!" he replies. (T. Times, 6/4/1937, p. 1).

Jessie (Mrs. Frank) Stephens standing beside a deer she shot that has been tied to the running board and fender of her automobile. Mrs. Stephens, of 3916 No. 32nd St., bagged the 200 pound buck in Mason County. It was larger than the deer shot by her husband Frank and his brother Earl Stephens. The largest was the 400 pound bear shot by Jim Pocquette of Midland. Mrs. Stephens has had a successful hunting season each of the three years since she started hunting. (T. ca. 1936. African white deer at Point Defiance zoo. The deer, called white fallow deer, are natives of South Africa. They were born in captivity in the Portland zoo and were a gift from that city. They are the 6th variety of deer to be added to the zoo's deer pens. The deer retain their white coat all year and weigh over 200 pounds when fully grown. Spectators called them more graceful and alert than the other varieties. (T. Times 2/4/1936, pg. 14)
