Lincoln High School beat Stadium High School, 13 to 7, in the big Thanksgiving Day football game classic at Stadium Bowl. Lincoln High School's football team won two titles in the 1948 season--Cross State Champions and City League Champions. In 1948, Tacoma had two public high schools; and for many years on every Thanksgiving Day the cross town rivals Stadium and Lincoln met for an epic football battle. The gridiron battle was intersected by a halftime show featuring competitive spectacular performances by girl marching units and the schools' marching bands. Pictured, left to right, were Stadium High School's majorettes: Betty Johnston, Pat Mason, Rosemary Martenson, Joan Mason, Dolores Dessen and five year old Suzanne Ramstad. The girls were wearing their uniforms, boots and plumed hats. This year Lincoln High School won the game 13-7; there was no record of who won the half time show. (T. Times, 11/26/48, p. 1). TPL-9315

This close up of halfback Otto Fink, in his battered leather helmet, was taken just before the September 1947 Grid-Go-Round football game sponsored by the Tacoma Athletic Commission. Otto Fink, a letterman at Bellarmine, had been on both the all-Northwest Catholic team and the all-City team in 1946. As a returning senior, he helped the Bellarmine Lions defeat Lincoln to win first place in the Grid-Go-Round. This was the last game prior to the start of the Evergreen Conference season. The highly favored San Jose came from behind to beat the Loggers 20-7. New grandstand at Fife High School, Fife Hi, Mr. Vioson. The new stands at Fife Memorial field were dedicated September 23, 1948, by a football game between the Fife Trojans and the Clover Park Warriors. Royal Magnus takes a stance as the letterman prepares for another season of Lincoln football. Lincoln had another successful year as it rebounded from losing all but three first-stringers to winning the City Title and splitting the Capitol League crown with Olympia High School. Presentation of the Totem Trophy by the Young Men's Business Club was made on November 2, 1963, to Coach John Heinrick of the University of Puget Sound. Seniors Ralph Bauman (#60) and Jack Sather (#23) stand next to their coach. The Loggers came from behind to defeat Pacific Lutheran University 9-7 to claim the Totem Trophy which is given to the winner of the annual match. UPS took home the Totem Trophy for the 13th time in 17 attempts. The tradition of Logger-Lute football dates back to about 1931 and is one of the longest running rivalries in the Northwest. Coach Heinrick was a coach, teacher and administrator at the University of Puget Sound for 30 years. Each year an award is given for the most inspirational athlete in Mr. Heinrick's name. Frank W. Patrick was named athletic director and head coach of the CPS Loggers football team at the College of Puget Sound in 1946. He was a former University of Pittsburgh and National Pro All-American football star. He played with the Chicago Cardinals of the National Professional League in 1938 and 1939. At the 1937 Rose Bowl game, playing for the Univ. of Pittsburg, he carried the ball for two touchdowns and helped defeat the Huskies 21-0. Coach Patrick turned in his resignation after CPS's 1948 losing season. (Tamanawas, 1946)

Captain Everett Gust led his Stadium Tigers football team to victory in the 9th annual Grid-Go-Round sponsored by the Tacoma Athletic Commission. The football game on September 14, 1951, featured four Tacoma area football teams: Stadium, Clover Park, Lincoln and Bellarmine. Gust, a fullback, recovered a Lincoln fumble in the title match, which eventually led to the final score of 6-0. The sixteen boys, members of the Cheney Studs Pee-Wee team, stand proudly dressed in football gear along with their two coaches in late October, 1967.
