Swimming team, Stadium High School, Metcalf, Times. A group portrait of the 1949 swim team. The 1949 Varsity Swimming Team was coached by Walter G. Streeter. The Stadium High School Reserve Swim Team of 1949 created quite a record for themselves. Led by Coach "Cam" Haslam (far rt., back row), a former Tiger swimmer, they won eight straight meets. These well-dressed men and women were gathered at Stadium High School in late January, 1953, as potential city council persons. Six lectures, each held on Monday nights, were held on city government. The lectures and discussions were open to all candidates running for the new city council. Stanton Warburton, E.K. Murray and Hal Murtland, former freeholders, were guest speakers the last Monday in January. Discussions were held on the role of public utilities under the new charter, a new continuous audit of the city's financial books, and the new role of the city manager. Stadium High School's Annual Senior Ball was the last formal event for students before graduation. The theme was "Orchids in the Moonlight", the school's gymnasium was decorated with orchids. A view of the front entry of Stadium High School. Originally built in 1891 as a hotel, the building was never completed and was converted to a high school in 1905. The school opened September 10, 1906, as Tacoma High School, and was renamed in 1913 as Stadium High School. It was designed by architect A.B. Hewitt in the French chateau style. Frederick Heath served as architect for remodeling as a high school. Towers topped with spires add decorative appeal to the exterior of the building. The steep roof has several dormers in it providing light the the upper rooms. Buildings, churches, schools, and parks made for special edition of Times, studio. TPL-1908.

Stadium High School. Designed by A. B. Hewitt in the French chateau style and perched on a bluff overlooking Commencement Bay, Stadium High School is the rebuilt shell of what was planned as a great tourist hotel by the Northern Pacific Railroad Co. The Tacoma Land Co.'s Tourist Hotel was built on a site costing $86, 000. The 240 x 250 foot five story edifice was slow in construction due to confines in financing caused by the 1893 Depression. When near completion, the $750,000 hotel was gutted by a fire October 12, 1898. Because of the high cost of rebuilding, it was abandoned as a hotel and in 1903 was proposed as a high school. The top 2 floors were removed, it was remodeled and in 1906 opened as the new Tacoma High School. The Old Woman's Gulch adjacent to the school was converted into a stadium. The name was changed to Stadium High School in 1913. The building is on the city, state and national historical registers and has been captured on film in "Ten Things I Hate About You." TPL-8382

The Chest drive has proven to be a great success, with the quota of $340,000 having been reached and exceeded by $171.09. This is the first time in 12 peace time years the Chest has met its quota (T. A true "Easter Parade" of fashions was on display at the afternoon tea and fashion show sponsored by the Girls Club of Stadium High School and the P.T.A. in March of 1947. Stadium and Lincoln High School students joined together at Stadium High School to clean up vandalism that occurred after the Lincoln-Stadium basketball game in March 1947. After Lincoln beat Stadium, 38 to 31, "Lincoln" was found spray painted over buildings, windows and sidewalks. Lincoln students formed a scrub brush and mop brigade with Stadium and helped clean up the mess. (T. Times, 3/5/47, p. 1). TPL-10465

During the summer of 1946, while Tacoma's school age children were on vacation, a group of police candidates were taking classes at Stadium High School. At the end of August, 37 of the candidates received diplomas and were declared full-fledged members of the Tacoma Police Department. Attending the graduation were a number of veterans of the Tacoma and Seattle police departments including: Police Captain A.E. Farrar, third from the left in the front row; Police Chief P.G. Gregg, in a dark suit and white hat; Safety Commissioner R.S. Temme, in light colored suit and "skimmer"; and Seattle Police Captain Emile Vallet, next to Temme. Joseph E. Ford, County Auditor, had a voting machine placed at Stadium High School so students could become familiar with the voting process. Students were offered the chance to vote on the candidates for the upcoming election. Student ballot results were announced prior to Tuesday's national election and their major candidate choices included : Franklin D. Roosevelt, Democrat, for President and Mon C. Wallgren, Democrat, for Governor. The public concurred on election day. (T. Times, 11/2/44, p. 1, names listed).

On Memorial Day in 1941 a ceremony was held at Stadium High School to pay tribune to the eleven Stadium High alumni who lost their lives in World War I. Twelve wreaths were lain, one each at the base of the eleven trees that lined the parking strip in front of the school, and one at the memorial plaque that lists the names of the soldiers.
