In February of 1952, representatives from the Tacoma Master Builders posed outside the model home, the "Tacoman," that was built by Jardeen Brothers for the fourth annual Tacoma Home Show. It was built on a lot adjoining the College of Puget Sound fieldhouse. The Master Builders were sponsors of the home show and suppliers of materials for the model home. The "Tacoman" was to be complete in every detail. Builders, designers, architects and suppliers within the organization contributed suggestions for items to be included in the home's design. A capacity crowd attended Jack Lacy's Sales Clinic at the College of Puget Sound that was presented by the Tacoma Sales Executive Club over three evenings. All shows were sold out days ahead of the lectures. William S. Crean, vice president of Lacey Sales Institute, flew from San Francisco for a three-city itinerary which included Vancouver, B.C., and Seattle, and Tacoma. (TNT, 2/2/1952, p.19)

ca. 1952. The cornerstone was laid in February, 1924, for Jones Hall on the College of Puget Sound campus. The building was designed by architects Sutton, Whitney and Dugan, who later designed several other campus structures. View of ivy-covered Jones Hall showing exterior and main entrance, the first building constructed on the college's North 15th and Warner site. The campus was opened in September, 1924. Franklin Thompson, president of the college conferred the degrees. Dr. Robert E. Burns spoke to the granduates on "World Unity, But How?". A poster on the counter at the right offers a chance to win a $50 savings account. It will go to the person who guesses the total resources of the National Bank of Washington as of May 7, 1951. Stinson Heating Company featured Rossoe Furnaces in their booth at the 1951 Home Show held at the College of Puget Sound fieldhouse. Lloyd J. Stinson and Grant A. Graham were partners in the business which installed, repaired and cleaned furnaces and oil burners. Rossoe models they carried included the Rossoe Economatic Floor Furnace and Rossoe Compact Models for basement or utility. They were located at 1907 South 56th Street.

Three unidentified employees of Western Furnaces, Inc. pose with the furnaces on display at the 1951 Home Show at the College of Puget Sound fieldhouse. Western Furnaces was founded in 1912. The company was the exclusive distributor for General Electric oil fired furnaces, air conditioning and heating equipment, and boilers for Southwest Washington. They maintained one of the largest oil burner service departments in Tacoma and had a fleet of 15 trucks. (TNT, 7/8/1949, p.3)

This beautifully decorated table at Jones Hall greeted the attendees of a preview showing on February 6, 1951 of Northwest artists on exhibit at the College of Puget Sound. The Tacoma Art League sponsored the exhibition. On the table were ti leaves, candelabras in black marble stands, brass coffee urn and assorted delicacies. From left in the photograph are: painter Mrs. Helen Everett, program chairman of the Tacoma Art League Mrs. Warren Tomlinson, Helen Feek, Tom Jensen and Maxine Parker. On January 5, 1951, three unidentified Tacoma Athletic Commission members posed with tennis stars (in white, left to right) Pancho Segura, Pauline Betz Addie, Gertrude "Gussie" Moran and Jack Kramer at the Bobby Riggs Professional Tennis Show held in the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. TAC and the Tacoma Lawn Tennis Club cosponsored the two singles and the doubles match offered in the nationally touring show. The most exciting matches were those of Kramer, who was top of the amateur field, and Segura, the flashy Latin player from Ecuador with the two handed forehand and backhand returns. "Gorgeous Gussie" Moran, consistently rated in the top 10 of this country, was better known for her fashion statements such as her ruffled tennis undies. Addie, who had worn the national women's crown for four years, was also known as a sharp dresser and the two women consistently tried to out dress each other. A portion of the evenings returns were donated to the March of Dimes. (TNT 1/5/1951, pg. 15)

Mrs. Robert Hyde directs the attention of Mrs. Lucille and Dr. R. Franklin Thompson to the painting entitled "Carnival", on loan to the exhibition at the College of Puget Sound. Dr. Thompson was the president of C.P.S. He and his wife were on hand to attend the Tacoma Art League's preview on October 3, 1950, of an exhibit featuring the work of two local artists, Mrs.Vera Fraser and Nelson Sears. Dr. Thompson became President of C.P.S in 1942 and served as president for 30 years.(TNT 10-8-50, p. D-4)

115 Boy Scout executives met at the College of Puget Sound in September, 1950, for a week long training session on administration and finance. Although the Boy Scout leaders meet annually, this was the first time they had ever met in Tacoma. Seven national leaders and Governor Arthur B. Langlie were also in attendance. (TNT 9-3-50, p. A-6)

Commercial gardening exhibit booth sponsored by Tacoma Seed Company, 805 Pacific Ave., at the spring flower show at the College of Puget Sound fieldhouse March 31- April 2, 1950. Organized by the women of the area's garden clubs, the spring flower show was part of the Daffodil Festival celebrations. The booth displayed yard machinery, Zehrung garden chemicals and Fletcher-Bilt all cedar greenhouses. In the foreground of the picture is a profusion of spring flowers supplied by the garden clubs and professional growers as decoration. Tacoma Seed Company's exhibit booth at the spring flower show, part of the Daffodil Festival, at the College of Puget Sound fieldhouse March 31- April 2, 1950. The booth displayed gardening products by Miller Products Co. of Portland, Oregon, including insecticides, fertilizers, fungicides and weed killers. The display also featured Scotts Lawn and Vigoro plant food, as well as manual push lawn mowers. The show included commercial exhibits such as this one and competitive horticulture and flower arranging exhibits. Both garden club members and the general public were invited to compete for the blue ribbons. A profusion of spring flowers decorated the fieldhouse and floral wall hangings were prepared by the garden clubs. Entertainment was supplied by local choirs and bands. Tacoma Master Builders Association exhibit booth at the second annual Greater Tacoma Home Show.The TMB was an organization for contractors that ensured quality by its logo "Master-built." The 6 day and 5 night 1950 Home Show was sponsored by the Master Builders and Associates and had over 100 exhibitors- roughly double the size of the 1949 show. Admission cost was 55 cents for adults, 25 cents for children and included admission to the $20,000 "Home of Ideas", at No. 11th and Jackson, that was constructed for this event and given away as a prize. Exhibits covered all aspects of home construction, remodeling, decorating, and landscaping. Special entertainment events were also scheduled throughout the show. The 1950 Home Show was a rousing success attended by over 21,000.

Booth at the second annual Greater Tacoma Home Show for Kirby Co. of Tacoma, 3521 6th Ave., electric vacuum cleaner sales and service. The booth features floor polishing equipment and products as well as vacuums. Prominently displayed is the Kirby sanitation system that has eight complete units: demother, suds sprayer, mattress cleaner, rug cleaner, floor duster, floor polisher and "handi butler." A drawing was held to give away a free Kirby. The company persuaded home show goers to purchase by telling them that "your home deserves a Kirby."

Booth at the second annual Greater Tacoma Home Show for Zingler Electric Co., 1112 Pacific Ave. The Home Show took place March 21-26, 1950 at the College of Puget Sound fieldhouse. This shot shows the latest in electric appliances- cabinet style sewing machines, an automatic wringer washer, new ranges and Frigidaire refrigerators. The electric sewing machine retailed for $89.95 at Zingler, $9 down and $5 per month.
