Three two-man crews of painters work from platforms suspended on the south wall of the Elks Temple, 565 Broadway, in August of 1947. The temple, dedicated on February 22, 1916, was designed by E. Frere Champney. The staircase next to the building, that connects Broadway with Commerce St., is known as the Spanish steps, and were intended to serve as a fire escape for the building. The Elks Temple has fallen into disrepair, and its future is in question. TPL-8446
On Sept. 15, 1946, at the awards ceremony of the First Annual Elks' Salmon Derby, Jerry Geeham, the master of ceremonies, in a white t-shirt, and an unidentified Elks member battled with an octopus. There were 104 fish entered into the competition. The first prize winner, Fred Bucholtz, won a 14-foot strip boat.(TNT 9/15/1947 p.14) Winners, Fishing Derby, Jerry Graham, Elks Club.

A memorial service was held for Walter Sutter at the Elks Club on October 3, 1947. Although one of Walt's last requests was that no flowers be sent, many arrangements were sent in his honor. Money that would have been spent on flowers was asked to be donated to the Tacoma Boy's Club. Exterior view of Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks, Tacoma Lodge No. 174. The Elks building had just been painted and repaired, additional remodeling would also be done on the interior of the building. Elks members chose this site in 1914 and it was officially opened in 1916. The stairs are spanish style and have a decorative balustrade between Broadway and Commerce Street. The style of the building could be classified as part of the Beaux-Arts movement with many classical and renaissance features including the symmetrical facade, grand arched openings, medallions and decorative swags. The Elks relocated to a new temple on So. Union Ave. in 1965.
Emmett Anderson, the past Grand Exalted Ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks No. 174, is visiting Tacoma and will be delivering the eulogy at the annual Elk's memorial services. The Elks Club at 565 Broadway was a full service club with its own barbershop. In this photograph from 1948, Exalted Ruler Cecil Walrath gets a haircut and shave with both giant scissors and a giant straight edge razor. The man holding the scissors is Swan Johnson; the one with a razor may be Harold R. Johnson, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Elks. Mr. Walrath doesn't seem too worried as he continues to read his Esquire magazine.

Gloria Ellexson, of Sumner, performed her award winning majorette routine for the Tacoma Elks Lodge on Wednesday June 30, 1948. A student at the College of Puget Sound, she had recently won the title of state champion in the majorette competition held in Aberdeen at the Elks' State Convention. She was the majorette for the Tacoma Elks Band, which , under the leadership of J. R. Gress, was also awarded state champion that year. (T. Times, 6/28/48, p. 1).

The goal of the Stocking Fillers project of the Tacoma Elks Club in 1948 was to insure that every child in Tacoma would be remembered on Christmas day. To help reach their goal, the Elks worked closely with Tacoma's 1,900 Girl Scouts. The scouts made sure that each of the 120 dolls that were given as gifts came with a full wardrobe of handmade clothes. The Elks Club had more than 100 members working on the upcoming Christmas benefit. The children would attend the annual Christmas Day party in the morning at the Elks Temple and receive their Christmas gifts. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is not just a club, it is a national fraternal organization with over 1,500 lodges in the United States. Interior view of the new kitchen, Head Chef Mitchell Pentel will be preparing wonderful meals for the Elks; everything has been remodeled and all the appliances are new, including an automatic dishwasher, sterilizers and a walk-in quick freeze storage room (T.N.T., 12/30/48, p. 4-7).
The Elks were organized to inculcate the principles of charity, justice, brotherly love and fidelity; the club promotes members' welfare and enhances the happiness of its members. The Elks believe they can increase American Patriotism and cultivate good fellowship. The newly remodeled Elks Temple was celebrating their new facilities with an open house for members and their wives. The Tacoma Elks Club was organized in 1890, the Tacoma Charter was presented by Deputy Exalted Ruler C. W. Niving. On December 30, 1948, the Elks Temple at 565 Broadway opened its doors to members, wives and ladies to see the newly renovated building. The club room, very popular with the majority of the membership, was just one of the rooms that was completely redone. Everything - chairs, tables, floor coverings, light fixtures - was new and modernized. Even the billiard tables were completely overhauled. All the funiture was custom made in Tacoma. (T.N.T., 12/30/48, p. 4-7).
The Tacoma Elks were celebrating the completion of their new building with an open house; all members and their wives were invited to attend. More than 150 boys were sworn in as School Patrol Officers, taking their oaths and joining the 600 other student officers in Tacoma. The Tacoma School District initiated the student safety program 20 years ago and since that time there have been about 10,000 patrol officers.
