Dinner at Tacoma Club for 73rd birthday of Sydney Albert "Sam" Perkins, local tycoon and former newspaper editor. The dinner was attended by over 100 of Mr. Perkins's friends and business associates. During his 50 years in Tacoma, he had served as the partner of W.P. Bonney in a wholesale and retail drug business, in Washington D.C. as the secretary of Mark Hanna and as owner of the Tacoma Daily Ledger and the News.

In September of 1939 the members of Tacoma's Daughters of Italy Drill Team gathered at Normanna Hall for a group portrait. The drill team members all dressed in their satin uniforms with satin hats and strap shoes. They were scheduled to travel by train to San Francisco on Sept. 6th, 1939 to attend the Supreme Convention of Sons and Daughters of Italy and compete for national honors. The competition was included as an attraction at the San Francisco World's Fair. In the front row, left to right, are Eva Nomellini, Carmella Pupo, Rose Pellegrini, Mobel Monaldi, Kate Lanza and Lena Reda. 2nd row, Rose Furaco, Mary Recona, Mary Carbone, Esther Reda, Elvira Salatino, Rose Colombini and Caroline Turco. In January of 1940, nine men were photographed while looking over the dormitory in the new Tacoma Rescue Mission at 1510-12 Pacific Avenue. The Tacoma Rescue Mission provided clean beds in a wholesome, Christian surrounding to transient and homeless men, most referred by the Pierce County hospital, the welfare office or the Police Department. The Mission's "new" building had previously been a tavern and small two story hotel. The Courtyard by Marriott Hotel was built on the site where the Rescue Mission used to stand. (T. The new tent and hive officers of the Knights and Ladies of Maccabees were installed that evening in public rites. Roy Devish and Ethel Koch are the respective leaders. Formally attired young folk at a dinner-dance held at the Tacoma Club on March 9, 1940. This was the first of Tacoma Club's formal dinner dances during the 1940 season. In May of 1939, the Tacoma Amateur Astronomers met on the campus of the College of Puget Sound to have their photograph taken for an exhibit at the New York Worlds Fair. In this picture, three of the club members are seen with one of the clubs larger telescopes. The young fellow looking through the telescope is Jimmy Wiborg, who was 14-years-old and the youngest member of the club. Jimmy had just recently finished building his own telescope. It had taken him two years to build, including 8 months to grind and polish the six-inch mirror. In this photograph Jimmy is flanked by (left) W.H. Crump, past-president of the club, and Fred Myers, meteorologist at the U.S. Weather Bureau. (T. Times, 5/16/1938, p. 16).

Fourteen year old Jimmy Wiborg gazes through a telescope on the campus of the College of Puget Sound in May of 1939. He is the youngest member of the Tacoma Amateur Astronomers. Other members pictured are, left to right, Fred Myers (meteorologist with the US Weather Bureau) and W.H. Crump (past president of the organization.) The group was posing for a series of pictures scheduled to be exhibited at the New York World's Fair. The group had constructed over 30 telescopes of varying sizes and power. The one pictured was built by Mr. Crump. The club was currently meeting on the campus of CPS, but had purchased property at 968 McKinley Road on McKinley Hill, with the intention of building a clubhouse and observatory. (T. Rainbow Girls Parade. State Convention. Costumed band aboard a mule drawn buckboard proceeds along streetcar tracks on Broadway at the corner of South 9th Street. Spectators are standing in the street watching the parade. The 13th annual Grand Assembly ran from July 12 through July 15, 1939, with nearly 1,200 girls in attendance.

Sam Perkins, seated on the right, and three other men pose for a portrait to celebrate Perkin's 73rd birthday. The event was held at the Tacoma Club in the Washington Building. Mr. Perkins had a long and varied work history in Tacoma. Sam Perkins and W.P. Bonney were partners in a wholesale and retail drug business in the late 1880s- 1890s. They went out of business in the depression of the early 90's when customers dried up. Mr. Perkins became the secretary of Mark Hanna, chairman of the Republican election committee for William McKinley. After the election, Perkins stayed on with Hanna for a while. Mr. Perkins returned to Tacoma in the late 90's as the owner of the Tacoma Daily Ledger and the News. His party at the Tacoma Club was attended by over 100 of his friends and business associates. (T. Members of the Tacoma and Puyallup chapters of the P.E.O. (philanthropic educational organization) gave a tableaux performance on January 28, 1939 in period costumes, in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Sisterhood. The program and breakfast party was held at the Y.W.C.A. Weyerhaeuser Hall. PEO was a women's organization that celebrated the achievements of women and promoted their educational advancement. Maxwell, member #2, whose career was in shipping; George L. Palmer, in the printing business and served once as Deputy Sheriff; S.A. Perkins, member #3, newspaper publishing; Major Charles O. Y.M.B.C. Narrows Bridge Committee. Club members may have looked deep into their closets to find the variety of hats worn in this June 25, 1940, photograph. Ten-gallon, sombreros, top hats and skipper's caps are worn jauntily by the Young Men's Business Club. Each year they held a Water Carnival at Point Defiance; in 1940, the date of the carnival was set for Sunday, June 30th, the day before the grand opening of the first Narrows Bridge and several days before the opening of the nation's newest airbase, McChord Flying Field. The Y.M.B.C. was a service organization who was heavily involved in community affairs; they would also sponsor the last ferry ride on the Kalakala, July 2nd, which would carry nearly 1400 people over the two routes to be discontinued by the opening of the Narrows Bridge.
