Lee L. Doud, one of the founders and the first president of the Woodbrook Hunt Club, posed in front of the clubhouse on October 16, 1948 with his palomino Bourbon Blue Dare. The Club originated in 1925 through the efforts of Mr. Doud and J.E. Mathews. In 1948, the Club divided its time between the summer rides, picnics and gymkhanas and the winter drag hunt. Dr. Alexander G. Ruthven being initiated as an honorary member of the Pierce county Sheriff's mounted posse at Woodbrook Riding Academy. Dr. Ruthven, President of the University of Michigan, was visiting Tacoma and attending meetings with alumni and conferences regarding the University's program for the development of peace time uses of nuclear power. Fritz and Georgia Glenewinkle's Collie dog presented the family with 9 puppies. When the puppies were old enough, the Glenewinkles placed them in dish towels, or diapers, and hung them from a clothesline strung across their kitchen. Perhaps, this photograph, taken in December, was for the family's holiday greeting cards.

Marian's Timothy, a black Labrador owned by Marian McPhail, is shown with some of his prizes won in the National Field Trials. Tim was rated fourth nationally among the derby dogs for 1951 from a field of 725 derby starters. Derby dogs are those not more than two years old. Tim's sire was Rip of Holly Hill and his dam was the McPhail's Shady of Spanaway Creek. Marian (Mrs. Charles W.) McPhail ordered this portrait of her thoroughbred dog,
Albert H. Hooker divides his time between two roles as an industrialist and a rancher. He and his dog stand proudly together in a pasture while he inspects his Hereford cattle at his large ranch at McKenna. Master of Foxhounds Earl Craig addresses the mounted members of the Woodbrook Hunt Club on the New Year's Day hunt held in 1953. The hunt club's pack of foxhounds surround Craig. Woodbrook is one of the few clubs in the country that maintains their own pack of hounds. The Woodbrook Hunt Club is still active, and they remain associated with the Masters of Foxhounds Association of America. They also still enjoy the sport of riding to hounds, but they do not hunt a live fox. They "drag hunt". The dogs follow a trail created by dragging a scent impregnated gunny sack along the ground. They use synthetic scent; the dogs follow a synthetic fox.

On April 26, 1938, Humane Society officer H. A. Dennison presented a medal to "Frisky" Bedford, 6-month-old German Shepherd dog, who saved 2-year-old Leon Bedford from drowning in a small pond near his home at 5112 So. 10th St. Leon, seated in front of the Humane Society's "Be Kind to Animals" panel truck, accepted the medal for his friend. The medal originally read "To Frisky Bedford, for saving his master's life." When Leon pointed out to the Society that his dog was a lady, the red faced Humane Society had it re-engraved. To Frisky Bedford the medal reads, "for saving her master's life." Pierce County Humane Society uniformed officer H. A. Dennison holds 2-year-old Leon Bedford while petting "Frisky" Bedford. ca. 1938. Dogs were apparently welcome at this eating establishment as a large black Cocker Spaniel gets a treat from a man stting on a soda fountain stool. Begging on his hind legs appeared to have paid off for the pooch in a 1938 stock photograph. Although a touch of elegance is present with the rattan counter stools which slope back, hamburgers were still an affordable 10 cents each.
There are chickens as far as the eye can see in this June 4, 1953, photograph. There were many varieties of chicken houses; this evidently was much larger than the normal chicken coop. To keep the chickens warm, at least three metallic heater units are hanging above their heads. A woman is apparently adjusting the height of one of the heaters by tugging at a rope. The many eggs laid by these chickens would be then transported to the Washington Cooperative Farmers Association who would clean, rate and sell them on behalf of the farmer. ca. 1937. Three black bears at Point Defiance Park. Zoo keeper George R. Jones reaches into steel bar cage while four young people watch. Cage is outdoors in open area with fenced area on back slope. In April of 1937, the zoo had no grizzly bears after the death of "Juliet," long time zoo resident. Her partner "Romeo" died the winter before. The zoo was expected a delivery of a pair of grizzly cubs in May from Yellowstone.

The Tacoma Spaniel Club held their field trials for 1937 in the prairie lands west of the Northern Pacific car shops in South Tacoma on March 21st. The "prairie lands" were just south of the South Tacoma Swamp. "High class" cocker and springer spaniels, including Pepper the defending champion, a red male cocker owned by Robert Wadsworth (center), competed for the prize trophy. A woman and two younger girls tend to the two horses in this photo labelled Dr Hellyer, snow scenes. Dr. David T. Hellyer maintained an office in Tacoma at 722 So. K St.; but he resided at 7814 John Dower Rd. W. in Lakewood, which is most probably the location of this picture.
The Commerce Street Business Men's Club Dog Parade was held on April 22, 1939. The only requirements to enter were that kids had to be under 16 and have a dog. Over 1,000 kids turned out to parade, viewed by many times that number parents and well wishers. The Grand prize winner, Shirley King (2nd from right) is pictured with her 14-year-old dog Bummer; runner-up Donald Grassfield (right) holds the collar of his German shepherd. (T.
