In October of 1941, Charles F.T. (Chen) Rowe stands next to Sanka, one of the horses that he boarded at the Point Defiance Riding Academy stables. Using the old barn and pasture that had been the home for the park's herd of buffalo, the riding academy was founded in 1933. The 50 year old stables were destroyed by fire in August of 1969 and never rebuilt. The 33 year old thoroughbred mare Sanka was a direct descendent of racing legend Man O'War. Sanka raced as a filly on the West Coast before being bought by Rowe at the age of five. The pair spent the next 28 years covering hundreds of miles together on the woody trails of Point Defiance, including remote areas patrolled only Rowe and his horse. Rowe also held a commission with the Pierce County Sheriffs Department. Sanka died of old age in October of 1964 and was laid to rest by her loving owner. (TNT 10/4/1964, pg B-10)

Big Jake, a one-year-old Saint Bernard, was to have been shot in October of 1940. Jake had gotten into a playful tussle with a pet goat and unfortunately killed it. His owner, 84, called the Sheriff's Dept. to have deputies be dispatched to kill Jake as he feared for Jake's future after the owner passed on. Deputies McLean and Bunce arrived at the home only to be met by a gentle Jake who promptly licked their hands. That persuaded the officers to take Jake to the dog pound instead and an alert was put on the air by sportsman Ray Grummel asking for a new home for Jake. Mr. Grummel had found homes for countless dogs in the past. Within a very short time, George Nygren of Spanaway was chosen as Jake's new owner. Edward Warburton, new manager of the Tacoma-Pierce County Humane Society, is standing beside the shelter's new truck with two dogs and a cat, stray pets at the shelter. The Humane Society is holding an open house on May 9, during "Be Kind to Animals Week" for visitors to see how the shelter operates and the many pets that are available for adoption. Dr. Alexander G. Ruthven being initiated as an honorary member of the Pierce county Sheriff's mounted posse at Woodbrook Riding Academy. Dr. Ruthven, President of the University of Michigan, was visiting Tacoma and attending meetings with alumni and conferences regarding the University's program for the development of peace time uses of nuclear power. A. Burwood Kennedy (left) on "Jeep" and Cyrus Happy, III, on "Kay Boy" were photographed in October of 1948 while going over the jumps at the Woodbrook Hunt Club in Lakewood. Co-founded in May of 1926 by Thomas H. Bryan and Major J.E. Mathews, the club divides its year between the informality of summer rides, picnics and gymkannas and the winter "drag hunts," where riders stream across the prairies behind the club's hounds. The Woodbrook Hunt Club's 1955 Spring Horse Show was held May 21-22, 1955 in the covered arena at the Woodbrook Stables. It featured exhibitions by the Pierce County Sheriff's Posse, square dancing on horseback by the Lariettes and a style show of what the best dressed horsewoman wears for Western riding, to an English hunt or square dancing. ca. 1937. Ed Griffin's champion English Mastiff "Broomcourt Nell" and her litter of puppies. The puppies were born in September of 1936, 7 females and 3 males. The puppies and their sires were the only English Mastiffs in the NorthWest.

In September of 1937, Vivian Sherman was pictured having a talk with her "lucky dog" Sport. The three year old setter was lucky to be alive. The year before in the winter, he caught his right front paw in a trap. He was stuck for eight days in the frozen trap until he broke the chain and crawled over a mile home. The Shermans had the leg operated on and Sport made a full recovery. He was an excellent hunting dog, despite the fact that he was left with only one toe on the damaged foot. Mrs. Sherman and her husband Frank were the owners of Tapps Fishing Tackle on South Tacoma Way. (T. Times 4/6/1937, pg. 13)

Along with daffodils and April showers, children and their pets have been a sure sign of spring in the Puget Sound area for generations. Photographer Chapin Bowen captured young Bobby David with his beloved dog, "Rags," seated in front of the Rialto Theater in 1931. Bob and Rags attended Tacoma's pet parade, held April 9, 1931.

In June of 1935, Champion Bulldog Sir Bolivar Buckshot poses steadfastly with his many trophies. Bred and owned by Mr. and Mrs. Frank W. Bjorklund of Spanaway, Sir Bolivar Buckshot was an English Bull, with a champion rating. He was declared both International and Pacific Coast Champion Bulldog. At four years of age, he was ranked second to none in this country or Canada. The famed champion died in 1942 at the age of 14, having sired many offspring around the country. (T. Gunnar Anderson, pianist, with his German shepherd, Duke. The two will ride in Anderson's Austin convertible from Tacoma to Cincinnati where he will study at the Cincinnati Conservation of Music under Dr. Karol Liszniewski. Mr. Anderson is considered one of the superior young pianists on the Pacific Coast. He has worked in Hollywood, on radio and as an organist. His goal is a career as a concert pianist. (T. Chief Boatswain Arthur L. Parker, US Navy, and his horse, Flicka. While in Tulagai, Mr. Parker operated on Flicka and to keep her safe from the threat of further bombs, her found a cave for her to stay in until she was well. He taught her tricks and they have been together four years. Mr. Parker says Flicka has more tricks than a poker playing ace. (T.Times, 10/1/1945, p.1)

Woodbrook Hunt Club. The Woodbrook Hunt Club was founded in May of 1926 and is the oldest hunting club in the Northwest. They held their fifth annual gymkhana of riding events on May 27, 1945 at Wrightacres on Clover Creek south of Tacoma. The nine events listed on the program included both English and Western styles. Alta Ryan and Marguerite Bonnell (L-R), mounted on "Lady" and "Patsy" rode in the event. (T.Times, 5/23/1945, p.6)

Lee L. Doud, the first president of Woodbrook Hunt Club and also one of its founders, is pictured with his palomino, "Bourbon Blue Dare," near the club stables on October 16, 1948. In this photograph from October 25, 1940, Dale Merry Wosnuk, 220 East 96th, is hand feeding a newborn cocker spaniel pup while its brothers and sisters sleep in a simple wooden crib.
