James "Jim" Holroyd stands on the running board of an International Harvester truck owned by Holroyd Company, behind the door on the driver's side of the cab. The Holroyd Co. used durable International Harvester trucks to transport mixers, building materials, and concrete products. Two City Fuel Company GMC delivery trucks are parked outside the Coffee House Roasters, Inc. at 3700 Center Street in October of 1955. They were probably not stopping for a cup of coffee. City Fuel was at 3702 Center and the two businesses shared the building. Owned by Douglas O. Howe, City Fuel had been in the business of delivering fuel oil to customers for thirty years. Their slogan "When it's cool call City Fuel" was painted on their trucks. City Fuel had moved into their Robert Billsbrough Price-designed new building at 3702 Center St. in August of 1953. They advertised a complete one-package heating program including automatic metered fill-up service, Winkler heating equipment and Mobilheat stove and furnace oils. A fleet of International Harvester trucks are parked side-by-side at the Holroyd Co.'s plant on South Washington Street on October 21, 1955. Several of the trucks have cement mixers aboard. Mrs. Ralph Chantry is pictured in August of 1955 with two unidenfied men admiring the new 1955 Custom Royal Lancer Dodge she recently won as the grand prize in a U & I Sugar contest. She had previously received the keys to the automobile from C.M. Young of B & Y Motors, Dodge representatives. She was especially happy to get a new car as her 1949 vehicle had just been sent to the garage for repairs. In addition, Mrs. Chantry, with her husband, would be going on an all-expense-paid trip to Hollywood as guests of the sugar company. An enormous steel tank rests on its side as it is hauled by a Sunnen heavy hauling truck to St. Regis on December 14, 1954. Star Iron & Steel Co., Inc., steel fabricators, manufactured the tank. Star Iron had been located at 435 E. 11th in the Tideflats since 1918; it was owned by Roy N. Allen, president with Edward N. Allen as vice president and E. Leo Curry as secretary. Besides tanks, the company also manufactured heavy cranes and logging machinery.

A small vehicle, resembling a jeep, is parked inside the Mt. Rainier Ordnance Depot on November 2, 1954. This possibly could be a paint spray booth located within a warehouse on Fort Lewis. ca. 1953. Three cars are parked next to the Winthrop Hotel, 773 Broadway, in the fall of 1953. An ornate marquee extending over the sidewalk would help to protect exiting car occupants and passersby from inclement weather. The elegant hotel was built in 1925 with funds supplied by a local subscription drive. It was named after explorer and author Theodore Winthrop who helped popularize the Northwest. BU-12138

Fuel Oil Service Co.; exterior of trucks. Fuel Oil Service was a distributer of furnace and stove oil. Mark C. Dolliver was the Manager & Roger C. Stewart the Sales Manager. The trucks were used to deliver the oil to the residential customers.

The truck is posed in front of a large propane tank labelled "Propane, the modern motor fuel." The back portion of the truck where the logs are usually loaded has been unhooked and now sits on the bed of the truck. International Harvester sold and serviced large commercial trucks.

In the early 1950s, Arden Farms took over the building at 824 Martin Luther King Jr. Way that had been the home of the Olympic Dairy Products Co. The large milk bottle on the roof made the building immediately identifiable. This photograph from February of 1953 shows four Arden Milk drivers standing proudly by their new Ford delivery trucks. The men are all dressed neatly in striped overalls, ties, and caps with the company's logo on them. Arden Farms was well known for their milk, "flavor fresh" ice cream, butter and cottage cheese. Each new Arden Milk truck is matched with its own driver on February 21, 1953. Arden Farms had just received four new refrigerated Ford trucks for use in delivering their milk and other dairy products. Arden drivers were neat in appearance with striped overalls, white shirts, ties and company caps. TPL-8083
The past meets up with the future in this December, 1952, photograph, as an antique automobile pauses to make a deposit at North Pacific Bank's new drive-up teller window. The two men are dressed appropriately for the brisk winter weather as they sit in the roofless vehicle. Another man standing outside the car assists in completing the banking transaction. A new Dodge delivery truck is on display at the Puyallup Fair. The names of Carman Manufacturing Company and Spring Air Mattresses have been painted on the covered back end of the truck. Joseph L. Carman, Jr., was president of the bedding manufacturing company located at 801 East 25th Street in Tacoma.
