Four women students at the College of Puget Sound are handbuilding pottery with clay. The two women on the right are working on pedestals that twirl to make it easy to access all parts of the pot. The two women on the left, Cynthia Harris and Maxine Lister, are working with clay in molds. These students are probably in the occupational therapy program at the College of Puget Sound. As of the 1990's the University of Puget Sound is well known for their OT program and it is one of the few programs offered at the post-graduate level there. Two College of Puget Sound students are weaving with large, foot-operated looms while their instructor looks on in this photograph from January of 1948. The foot-pedals are used to raise and lower specific strands of the warp threads (running from front to back of the loom and sometimes long enough to be wrapped around a cylinder at the back) in a pre-set pattern. When the warp is separated between top and bottom layers the weft threads held on a large bobbin (seen in the hand of the woman on the left) are shoved across the loom and removed from the other side. Then the pedals are changed to select the next set of warp threads for the pattern.

Harstad Hall, "Old Main", stands proudly in the middle of the expanding campus as shown in this elevated view. Just in front of the point where the sidewalks converge is the entrance gate to Pacific Lutheran College. The Student Union is to the left of "Old Main" and the Science Hall is between and above them. The library is to the upper right. In the far, upper left is the new Memorial Gymnasium. The Central Board was a group of students vested with the responsibility of appointing committee heads, supervising the control of ASCPS finances, choosing publication heads and planning special campus events. The board was comprised of representatives of each class, editors of the Trail and Tamanawas, department managers of forensics, men's and women's intramural, music and dramatics, elected officers of ASCPS, and three faculty advisors. The new Pacific Lutheran College Memorial Gymnasium was dedicated at the first basketball home game of the season. The new gym has a sound proof radio booth, electric scoreboard, portable bleachers, classrooms, laundry facilities and a trophy ornament area. Robert West, Lincoln High School art student, was awarded first place for his "Night Incandescent", he received a $300 full tuition waiver for CPS's art program. Robert Greuger, Stadium High School art student, received second place and a $150 partial tuition waiver. The contest was open to students from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana; out of 11 honorable mentions, 7 were awarded to Tacoma students. Gathered around Tacoma's historic totem pole at 10th and A St. in this picture from November of 1951 are several of the principals in the fifth annual "Totem Bowl" football game which brings together the College of Puget Sound (UPS) and Pacific Lutheran College (PLU) teams Saturday November 10th in the Lincoln Bowl. Left to right are Co-Captains Don Murdock and Bob Demko of the Puget Sound squad; Eileen McArthur, C.P.S. yell queen; Bob Nielsen, P.L.C. Captain, and Jack Enochs, P.L.C. yell king. Miss McArthur and Enochs led student body groups from the two schools in a joint pep rally at the totem pole on Friday Nov. 9th. The Logger and Lute squads will be competing for the Tacoma Young Men's Business club "Totem Pole" trophy, an exact replica of the pole at 10th and A.

On July 19, 1951, workmen were cutting and installing one-inch blankets of insulation in the band room at the new chapel-music-speech building at Pacific Lutheran College. The J-M system of sound isolation was being used to control sound waves which are transmitted by structural vibration. Light weight and specially constructed floors, walls and ceilings were entirely divorced from the building structure by means of felted isolators. The floating interior had no rigid contact with the outer solid structure of the building. The felt cushioned isolators took up the sound impulses which otherwise would be transmitted throughout the structure. (TNT, 7/22/1951, p.C-12)

36 members of the Adelphian Choir posed for a group portrait on January 9, 1974, in the University of Puget Sound's recital room inside Jacobson Hall. The choral group, founded in 1932, was composed of students from the University of Puget Sound. Each year the Adelphians would perform locally and often tour. Various Adelphian Choirs have performed in the United States, Canada and Europe. The current choir would be the guest singers at the free Tacoma Symphony Orchestra concert on February 13, 1974 at the Temple Theater. Pacific Lutheran College "Choir of the West" with Professor Gunnar J. Malmin, Director of Music and Choir of the West Conductor. The choir wears traditional robes with a monogrammed stole. The Choir of the West toured the area and performed on the radio. They sang a classical repertoire. Prof. Malmin took over as director of the choir in 1937. The modernistic lobby contains contemporary curved sofas and chairs. During the day, the large windows would permit plenty of sunshine into the room; at night, large light fixtures would provide lumination. This early 1956 photograph was taken on the campus of Pacific Lutheran College in the new College Union Building, the center of student activity. The College Union Building would also contain a large recreation room with ping pong and pool tables, book store, post office, snack bar, yearbook and student council offices. ca. 1956. The college bookstore was an integral part of college life. Here a student could purchase books and materials necessary for courses plus "fun" items such as sweatshirts, jackets, and pennants bearing the school's name. Even toys like stuffed dogs could be ordered and paid for. The Pacific Lutheran College self-service bookstore was located in the new College Union Building recently completed in early 1956. Items were neatly displayed making it easy to locate necessary merchandise. Store hours were adjusted to suit the needs of its clientele; in this January, 1956, photograph, the store was open in the evenings past 6 o'clock. All furnishings were custom built. ca. 1956. Housemother Freda Rouze shows the "sign out" book to Nancy Iverson at Pacific Lutheran College's newest dorm, West Hall. Another coed, Katherine Almgren, checks her mail at the dorm mailboxes. West hall was completed in the fall of 1956 and housed 151 freshman and sophomore women. It had much the same plan as the college's North Hall, and offered a main lounge, kitchen for student use, study lounges on every floor and a self service laundry. (1957 "Saga" & TNT 10/19/1956, pg.
