ca. 1926. A V-shaped driveway leading to "Rhodesleigh", the Henry A. and Birdella Rhodes Estate on Lake Steilacoom, Interlaaken. Heath, Gove and Bell, Architects, 1921. Glimpse of mansion through the trees. The site was originally the location of a 1908 lakefront summer cottage owned by the Rhodes family. The larger home was built in 1921 as a family tribute to son Edward B. Rhodes, who was killed in World War I. It is on the National Registry. The home is still a private residence. Exterior of the Royal Ice Cream Co. facility, 2413-21 Pacific Ave., during its Grand Opening in October of 1927. The architectural firm of Hill & Mock designed the building. The company called it the "Sanitary Sunlight Plant" and boasted how it combined utility with economy. The large windows were designed for ventilation and sunlight. Royal Ice Cream and Milk Co. Interior of plant showing equipment during Grand Opening. Flowers in vases sitting on machines. Royal Ice Cream was well known by its slogan "It's the cream." From 1900-1927, its plant was located at 912-14 A St. In October of 1927, they opened a new factory at 2413-21 Pacific Ave. The plant bottled milk and manufactured ice cream and other dairy products. The milk was pumped into receiving tanks on the top floor where it was heated and then syphoned into glass lined tanks. It then passed over coolers into the filling and capping machine and from there to the milk storage room. The process for ice cream was similar, after being prepared and aged in holding tanks, it dropped by gravity into the freezers, where it was drawn into cans and carried by conveyor belt to large sharp temperature rooms for hardening. ca. 1926. James E. Sales, the first white child born in Tacoma, and his wife Josephine reminisce over paintings of the old homestead. Mr. Sales was born in 1853, the son of English immigrants, William and Eliza Sales. His father worked at the Delin Saw Mill. At 18 months of age, James Sales was adopted by Edward and Martha Croft who had lost their own sons. The Crofts raised James and he came to inherit their 324 acres and the cabin built in 1860. In later years, a friend named Bert Barnes drew two pictures of the cabin from memory. Eight very serious couples were photographed at Washington School wearing colonial costumes and powdered wigs. They had been rigorously rehearsing the minuet to perform in a series of three big music festival concerts taking place May 4-6, 1926 at Jason Lee, Lincoln and Mason. The concerts were part of the observance of National Music Week. Despite their expressions, the group felt the experience was great fun. Pictured, in no particular order, are Alene Symser, Daniel Stixrud, Barbara Bryan, Frederick Wolf, Barbara Rothermel, Gordon McEachran, Helen May, Lofton Tatum, June Everson, Lewis Jones, Muriel Ellis, Malcolm Shaw, Nancy Quick, Robert Cromwell, Phyllis Zeigler and Robert Martin. Sherman School 8-B class photographed in January of 1926. This northend school was built in 1891 from a design by Pickles & Sutton, architect. It was, as were several other Tacoma schools, named after a Civil War general, Union officer William Tecumseh Sherman. It was built on land purchased from Allen C. Mason. The school was used for 63 years before it was demolished in 1953, when a new school was built. (Olsen, "For the Record.") (WSHS)

ca. 1925. According to the 1925 City Directory, Standard Office Equipment was located at 109 So. 10th. The company was a stationer and office outfitter. Apparently they guaranteed to furnish your office no matter what the employee's sizes. They demonstrate this by photographing the circus "Fat Lady" in a chair built by Sikes. A regular office chair is posed nearby for comparison. (WSHS)

J. T. Richmond, better known as "Dad," spent his 80th birthday on September 3, 1925 hard at work at the salt water Nereides Baths at Point Defiance teaching beginners how to swim. His student in this photograph was 5 year old Charlotte Hannah. "Dad" was the most popular instructor at the Baths and was believed to be the oldest water sports instructor in the nation. He had been teaching swimming for 25 years. He spent an average of three hours a day in the water and also walked 3 miles daily for exercise. The Nereides, an indoor heated salt water pool, operated at Point Defiance from 1906-1932. (TNT 9/3/1925, pg. 13) (WSHS- negative A858-0)

The Tacoma Civic Orchestra posed in November of 1925 outside of the Scottish Rite Temple, 5 So. G St., where they performed their first concert of the winter season on November 22, 1925. Every seat in the house was full. Prof. D.P Nason was conductor and director; Carl Bergman was concert master. The group was organized by Prof. Nason, director of music at Lincoln High School, and was composed of 65 young amateur musicians who volunteered their time and effort. W.E. ("Bill") Dalgleish of Tacoma was one of the leaders after the first day of competition, June 19, 1925, at the 27th annual Pacific Northwest Golf Association open tournament held at the Tacoma Country & Golf Club links. Mr. Dalgleish was the head pro at the site of the event. He would eventually finish at 309 strokes for the tournament, 14 behind the winner, Seattle pro Jack Hueston.
