View of new blower system at Puget Sound Plywood manufactured by the National Blower and Sheet Metal Co., Tacoma. National Blower and Sheet Metal was established in 1890. The company designed and built ventilation, dust collecting and blower systems as well as doing general sheet metal work. They were responsible for much for the sheet metal work on the new County-City Building.

Copy of magazine ad. "Oak paneling from real oaks" was the heading of a Weyerhaeuser advertisement that ran in magazines. The ad stressed that every piece of Weyerhaeuser hardwood paneling actually came from real trees. All Weyerhaeuser paneling were given lustrous prefinishes. Copy of customer's old photograph, ordered by Drew Foss on June 12, 1964, for insertion into an album. This is an undated sepia photograph of a young Agnes Foss. Wife of Henry O. Foss, youngest son of Thea & Andrew Foss, she was born in Tacoma of immigrant Norwegian parents. She lived in the Tacoma area all her life. Her January 14, 1979, News Tribune obituary noted that she was a champion golfer and horsewoman. She and Henry were wed for 65 years before her death at age 87. Her memorial service, like her husband's, was held at the Henry Foss High School next to Cheney Stadium.

Mrs. W.N. Spahn happily accepted the keys to a new Ford Mustang on September 1, 1964, from the Bon Marche managing director Darrel Vannice. She won the car during the Bon's grand opening festivities at the Tacoma Mall. To promote the Bon's new location, all who applied for a Bon credit card were entered into an August 31, 1964, drawing for fabulous prizes; besides the new Mustang, other prizes awarded were a Shetland pony, $100-1000 fully paid charge accounts, and free dinners in the new Cascade Room. Studio display of Weyerhaeuser registered Home Mortgage Calculator. Made out of paper, the mortgage calculator would be easy for a homeowner to operate and figure out which plan would be better financially. It is apparently based on a 6% loan with mortgages running from 20 - 30 years. An envelope and additional mortgage calculator are out of focus in the background.

ca. 1964. Hardy stalks of bamboo are examined by three unidentified men outside the new Kokura restaurant located on the Broadway level of the Winthrop Hotel. The Kokura, named after Tacoma's sister-city on the island Kyushu, Japan, opened in the summer of 1964. The bamboo plant was probably destined for the restaurant's interior whose furnishings were either directly from Japan or associated with that culture. TPL-5022

Aerial view of what is probably the massive Potlatch Forests, Inc., plant in Lewiston, Idaho, taken in late September-early October, 1964. Plant operations were situated in what appears to be a sparsely populated area. Potlatch products could be conveyed by water, road, and railroad to customers nationwide. Governor Albert D. Rosellini was the guest speaker at the Tacoma Ad Club's luncheon at the Elks Club on September 9, 1964. Governor Rosellini was attempting to secure a third term as the state's chief executive. Club member Richard Wilkins (center) and club president Michael Rourke (left) stand near the governor. The Tacoma Ad Club was a civic organization for persons involved in the advertising profession. The advertising club dated back to the 1920s.

The National Bank of Washington held the Northwest's biggest ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. on August 8, 1964 at its new Tacoma Mall Branch located at 4301 So. Steele Street. A 350-foot ribbon completely encircled the building and the public was invited to join the ceremony. A "bank-warming" with refreshments, gift corsages for the ladies, and door prizes followed. The 8,300 square foot circular, glass-enclosed building was designed by Tacoma architects Lea, Pearson & Richards and built by Strom Construction. This building was torn down around 1995. Crane under construction at Star Iron & Steel Co. The Star Iron & Steel plant was located in new quarters at 326 Alexander Ave. in the Port Industrial area. Custom designing and manufacturing special equipment, cranes, and hoists was its primary business. During July, 1964, gantry cranes weighing 50 and 350 tons were being manufactured by Star Iron & Steel. Gantry cranes were similar to overhead bridge cranes except that the bridge for carrying the trolly or trolleys was rigidly supported on two or more legs running on fixed rails or other runway. People of all ages stream through the doors of Gov-Mart South, a discount department store, on October 14, 1964. Gov-Mart was located on a strip of land between Hwy. 99 and and I-5, opposite McChord AFB. 20,000 people flocked to the grand opening of the newly remodeled and expanded store. Previously a membership-only store, those attending on October 14th were admitted without membership requirements. Gov-Mart South, a discount department store located between I-5 and Hwy. 99, opened a new expanded food market within the store on October 14, 1964. Besides food bargains such as bananas at 10 cents a pound, and meats and fresh produce on sale, Gov-Mart put 4000 food items on price reductions. Thousands of shoppers took advantage of the low prices. In addition to store expansion and remodeling, Gov-Mart opened its doors to the general public instead of by-membership-only and also changed its name to Gov-Mart/Baza'r. Occupants of the second-floor patio deck and people in the courtyard below could all enjoy the sight and sound of George Tsutakawa's bronze water fountain located on the premises of Pacific First Federal Savings & Loan Association's downtown main office. Shaped in the form of a dark lily, the fountain would provide many years of pleasure before it was moved ten years later to the savings and loans' new Lakewood branch near the Villa Plaza. Tacoma's major business area was still in downtown Tacoma although some major retail stores, like the Bon Marche and soon, J.C. Penney's, had moved out to reach a more suburban clientele. The Tacoma Building on A St. still retained Weyerhaeuser's corporate offices and the Medical Arts Building on Market/St. Helens had not yet become the Tacoma Municipal Building. Busch's Round Table was a familiar sight on South Tacoma Way for many years. Previously known as Busch's Drive In which featured car hop service, it had evolved into a dine-in restaurant by 1965.
