Daughters of the Nile installed their new queen, Mrs. Reuben Golliet of Olympia, at the Masonic Temple. In an elaborate setting depicting the throne room of an ancient temple several women are seated on a dimly lit stage while a woman stands near the front of the speaking into a microphone. The speaker's podium is a replica of an ornate, Corinthian column. Musical selections were sung by Mrs. Romona Rockway Grim and the Zora temple choir. (TNT, 3/23/1952, p.E-7)

Publicity photo of a group of 5 for Elks Extravaganza, Elks Auditorium. The 5th annual Tacoma Elks Extravaganza, under the direction of old time vaudeville star Max Frolic, was presented March 25-26, 1952. The Wednesday performance was exclusively for local lodge members and the Thursday performance was open to all Elks, their ladies and friends. The show featured 15 attractions: singers, dancers, dramatic acts and a 15 piece orchestra under the direction of Bert Kool. Pictured, left to right, are Mike J. Mrs. Reuben Golliet of Olympia was installated as the new queen of the Daughters of the Nile in a setting of oriental splendor depicting the throne room of an ancient temple at Masonic Temple in March 1952. She was escorted to the temple by the patrol and attendants for installation. She was preceded by the officers attired in pastel gowns and carrying arm bouquets of complementing colors. The Normanna Male Chorus were scheduled for two events in March 1952. The chorus was joined by the Norwegian male choruses of Seattle, Everett, Bellingham and Portland for a concert March 16th in the new chapel-music-speech building at Pacific Lutheran College. March 28th the Normanna Male Chorus presented a minstrel show at Normanna Hall. The Normanna Male Chorus took part in Normanna's first minstrel show. The male chorus changed out of their natty dark jackets and white slacks for blackface makeup for their parts in the show. Free dinners offered to servicemen at Tacoma's USO club by the Pierce County Restaurant Owners' Association. Servicemen from different branches of the military are being served hot dogs, bananas and vegetables by volunteers in aprons. This USO club had been in continual operation since 1941, providing a "Home away from Home" for American Servicemen. Even in 1951 when funding from the national organization stopped, Pierce County agencies kept the door open on this club.

Free dinners offered to servicemen at Tacoma's USO club by the Pierce County Restaurant Owners' Association. Servicemen from different branches of the military stand in line for dinner as female volunteers smile back over their shoulders at the camera.The dairy snack bar sponsored by Medosweet can be seen in the background. This USO club, in operation since 1941, was one of several in Tacoma during wartime. In 1951, when financial backing from the national organization stopped, Tacoma kept this club open by generous contributions by Pierce County residents and organizations. All service at the club was performed on a volunteer basis, to provide a "home away from home" for American servicemen.

ca. 1952. Installation of officers, White Shrine of Jerusalem, for Mrs. A.B. Burnett. The White Shrine is a Christian auxiliary of the Freemasons. It is open to men who have achieved the rank of Master Mason and women related to Master Masons who profess "Belief in the defense of the Christian religion." It was organized in 1894 in Chicago by Charles Magee, a Freemason. Members must be adults, white and non-Jewish. Prior to 1953, members also had to belong to the Order of the Eastern Star.

ca. 1952. Three drum and bugle corps from area American Legion Posts pose in humorous costumes for this picture taken on the 700 block of Broadway in downtown Tacoma. Represented are the Auburn Post No.78, Seattle's University Post No. 11 and West Seattle's Post #160. The American Legion held its 1952 state convention in Tacoma in August. The convention was highlighted by two downtown parades. The Voyageurs of La Societie des Forty Hommes et Eight Chevaux (40 et 8) staged their "Goof" parade from So. 7th and Pacific Ave, to Jefferson, to Broadway and back to the Elks Temple. More than 22 units participated. The costumes range from cross dressing, to dressing like children, to a couple of men dressed like babies in diapers and bibs. The American Legion is a patriotic society formed of veterans dedicated to preserving the rights of those who have served in the military and volunteering time and raising money for charities. (T. ca. 1952. In August of 1952, the American Legion held its annual state convention in Tacoma. It was highlighted by afternoon downtown parades with drill teams, drum and bugle corps and floats. This marching group, representing the American Legion Edward B. Rhodes Post #2 of Tacoma, wore a wide variety of clothing, including uniforms from all the branches of the US military and what appears to be Scottish regalia. The drum majorette wore a costume covered with the flags of many countries. The group posed in front of the Colonial Hotel, 701-05 Commerce St. The Rhodes Post #2 was incorporated on May 28, 1920 with 15 names on the charter; the second charter granted in the state of Washington and the first in Pierce county. The Post was located at 407 So. G St. The present day Post is formed of veterans of all the conflicts and continues to battle for the rights of veterans. (T. Reporter, 8/11/1952, pg. 2)

Marie Hazen Orthopedic Guild. Interior exposure of decorated tent for "Strawberry Festival" taken on June 20, 1952. Spacious tent is set up with dining tables, evergreen trees and pots of ferns and flowers. The Marie Hazen Orthopedic Guild sponsored a "Strawberry Festival" for many years.

In honor of Flag Day 1951, the Tacoma Elks held special services at their Lodge at 565 Broadway. Preparing for the rites were, L-R, Erling O. Johnson, secretary and speaker for the occasion; Harold L Duncan, exalted ruler; and Burritt B. Anderson, Loyal Knight and Flag Day chairman. The centerpiece for the ceremony was a replica based on Joe Rosenthal's famous photograph of the flag raising on Iwo Jima during World War II. The observance of Flag Day originated with the Elks organization in 1907. In 1949, President Woodrow Wilson, himself a member of the Elks, made June 14th a day of national observance for that symbol of our country. Photograph ordered by the Elks. The design for the home was an adaptation of Spokane architect Bruce Walker's design that won first award in home design competition. A conversation area has been created off the main part of the living room in "The Northwesterner". Two side chairs and a sofa have been arranged around a coffee table. Another view of the kitchen in "The Northwesterner". The linear lines of the open beams are emphasized by the cupboards and appliances lining both long walls of the kitchen. The wooden door at the far end of the kitchen mimics the lines of the room. The diagonal pattern of the floor covering provides a break in the repetition of the linear pattern. TPL-7638

The living room in "The Northwesterner" shows the use of an open floor plan. The kitchen can be seen through the opening on the left. The open beam ceiling and far wall have been painted a light color and the interior walls around the kitchen are painted much darker. Modern styling can be seen in the light fixtures, the dining furniture against the wall below a mirror with no molding. A large television is angled across the far corner. A patterned rug has been placed on the hardwood floors. TPL-7641

The bathroom in "The Northwesterner" makes use of space economically. A tub with shower is fitted in on the left next to the toilet. A sink with a small counter also provides storage space below and a drawer on the right. A goose-neck lamp provides lighting over the sink as well as a window covered with patterned glass for privacy. Tile has been used on the floor and the walls. TPL-7643

A small bedroom in "The Northwesterner" provides a wall of storage with closets, drawers and covered cubby holes above. The exterior and interior of the closets and cabinets are painted a light color and the two adjacent walls are painted a dark color.
