One of the biggest events in the Spring of 1937 for the high school set in Bremerton was the Junior Prom, held April 28th at the Masonic Temple ballroom. For the dance, the ballroom was transformed into Venice, with gondolas in a setting of silver stars and blue skies. This transformation was due to the hard work and planning of the decoration committee, including the pictured young ladies, left to right, Mae Wilbur, Sana Benedict, Kathleen Johnson and Barbara Jean Hamer. Monica Kuich, age 10, witnessed the murder of neighbor Edythe Ward Giles and the suicide of former husband, Rufus E. Giles, in the front yard of 5225 So. Junett, on July 13, 1937. Monica stands by her doll carriage on a board walkway in front of her house near the Tacoma Masoleum. She was playing with her doll in the street fronting the murdered woman's home when she heard a scream and saw the victim running from the front porch. Mr. Giles then shot his ex-wife in the back with a rifle and turned the gun on himself. The Tacoma Times has listed the murder victim as Mrs. "Ward," apparently her former name. According to her son, Ivan Ward, his mother had divorced Mr. Giles but apparently was living with him again. Rufus Everett ("Bob") Giles, age 44, was a city jail trusty. He had apparently asked permission to leave the jail to retrieve a pair of shoes and permission was granted. Mr. Giles had been sentenced to twenty days in jail for drunk driving and was working in the police garage. (T.Times, 7-14-37, p. 1)

Gilbert McLean, tree surgeon, and Doris Cook, a nurse at Tacoma General Hospital, examining a wind damaged tree in Wright Park. The tree has been sealed and braced with iron rods. McLean, one of the few skilled practitioners of arboriculture in Tacoma, is employed by the Metropolitan Parks District to take care of its ailing trees. He was hired shortly after the disastrous windstorm of October 21, 1934 which destroyed 34 trees in Wright Park alone. McLean has now nursed 12 of them back to health. He is also responsible, along with Superintendent Sherman Ingels, for scientifically labelling the 1200 trees in the Wright Park Arboretum. In his spare time, he also prunes, sprays and trims the trees. (T. Times 11/6/1935, pg. 8)

In November of 1935, Gilbert McLean, tree surgeon, and Doris Cook, a nurse at Tacoma General Hospital, compare surgical methods while examining a wind damaged tree in Wright Park. McLean, an arboriculturist with the Metropolitan Park District, worked from 1928- 1932 with the Davey Tree Expert Co. He has treated the damaged tree's cavities with the "Davey System." First, he carefully cleaned the wood around the wound. Then he packed the hole with cement to keep the water out and coated the filling with emulsified asphalt as a preservative. Miss Cook stated that thankfully cement and asphalt were never used in the operating room at TG. (T. Times 11/6/1935, pg. 8)

The home was designed in the style of an English manor. This house was the scene of the 1936 kidnapping of Charles Mattson. It was demolished in May of 2006.

New home for the Whistle Bottling Works, built in 1926 by the Cammarano Brothers. Interior showing machinery and potted plants. The new $50,000 plant was filled with modern equipment. After being "mixed" according to preset formulas, flavored syrups were poured into sterilized bottles on a conveyor belt. They travelled from machine to machine, where they were filled with carbonated water, capped and labelled. The plants and flowers were probably sent by well wishers for the plant's opening. The second floor laboratory, or "mix" room, in the new $50,000 Whistle Bottling Co. plant. Interior shot showing vats, gallon bottles on shelves. The room had a long testing bench or counter with shelves above it filled with graduates, filters and a large assortment of concentrated syrups. A 100 gallon mixing tank was used for compounding "simple syrup" from boiling water and pure cane sugar. This tank was connected with mixing tanks, where the simple syrup was mixed with the concentrated syrups that gave the beverage its distinctive taste. The mixed syrup flowed down a pipe into the first floor machine room where it went into sterilized bottles that were topped off with carbonated water. (TDL 8/22/1926, pg.
