Miss Jean Trovani, retiring president, presented the presidential gavel to Miss Mitzi Pinch, the new president of the Dr. Edward Rich Orthopedic Junior Guild, on July 10, 1951. Miss Pinch entertained the group at a pot luck dinner at the home of her parents, Morris and Sonya Plotkin. On Saturday July 21, 1951, members of the Ellen Satterlee Junior Orthopedic Guide became seafaring revellers when they boarded the Gallant Lady for a picnic lunch and cruise. Charting a course are Betty Frangen (left), president, and Joyce Johnstone, chairman of the party. The cruise included a stop at Burton Beach so that the guild members could enjoy an afternoon swim. The big winners in the annual Poggie club salmon derby held at Point Defiance on July 22, 1951 were: (l to r) Gary Anderson, sixth-place winner; Ronald Robbecke, first boys' prize with his catch which weighed 16 pounds, 13 ounces; Caryn Ann Piper, first girls' prize with her salmon which weighed 15 pounds, 4 ounces; Chuck Lucich, fourth prize, and Jim Johnson, fifth prize. The third place winner, David Rivett, was not present when this picture was taken. The 335 kids who took part in the annual competition pulled in approximately 512 pounds of salmon, with the help of their dads and friends, during the eight hours of competition. Afifi Shrine members give big smiles to their young guests as they plan the annual Shrine picnic. The three little girls and young boy are all holding paper ice cream cones as are two of the committee men. The picnic in 1951 was held at the chateau of the Tacoma Sportsmen's Club near the Brookdale Golf Club. It featured contests, ball games, a concert by the Afifi Band, family dinner and closing dance. In August of 1951, sailors from the Tacoma Navy Station found the Tacoma U.S.O. at South 13th and Fawcett to be an ideal place to relax, and test their skills with a pool cue or a ping pong paddle. During the summer of 1951 Fort Lewis, McChord Air Force Base and all the nearby military bases were jammed to wartime troop levels due to the conflict in Korea. The Tacoma Community Chest donated funds to the U.S.O. to help provide wholesome recreational actives for servicemen stationed here. During the previous year, over 20,000 military personnel had used U.S.O. facilities in Tacoma. (TNT 10-4-51, D-5) TPL-10387

For the second year in a row, the Royal Arch Masons of Washington met at the Tenino sandstone quarry to confer the Mark Masters degree to certain recipients in an outdoor ceremony. Royal Arch Masons from throughout Washington congregated in August, 1951; invitations were limited to Masons only and not the general public. Centralia Chapter #44 coordinated the gathering while officers of Sunset Chapter #23, Chehalis, opened the ceremonies. (TNT 8-9-51, B-5)

A large gathering of Royal Arch Masons met for the second year in a row at the Tenino sandstone quarry to confer the degree of Mark Masters to qualified members in an outdoor ceremony. Royal Arch Masons from throughout the state attended the August, 1951, gathering which was sponsored by the Centralia Chapter #44. Ceremonies were opened by the officers of the Sunset chapter #23, Chehalis, with Donald C. Rogers, state head of the order, and his officials in attendance. The Mark Masters degree is built upon a legendary incident which took place during the quarrying of stone for the building of King Solomon's temple. (TNT 8-9-51, B-5)

Four retiring officers of the Delta Theta sorority are posed in an August, 1951, photograph. They had turned over their positions to new officers at the sorority installation banquet held at Crawford's Sea Grill restaurant on August 27, 1951. From L to R are Janie Wilhelmi (outgoing recording secretary), Junice Ates (outgoing president), Jean Trovani (outgoing vice president) and Myrna Scheckner (outgoing corresponding secretary). The Pi Phi Mothers Club sponsored a reception honoring the new members. Pi Beta Phi was the first national sorority at the College of Puget Sound; it absorbed local sorority Kappa Sigma Theta in September, 1948. The C.P.S. chapter was the 94th in the nation and born the title of Washington Gamma. The Pi Phi Mothers Club hosted a reception for new pledges at the home of Mrs. Addison Forrester in September, 1951. Earl Craig, Master of Foxhounds, steadies the ladder while his wife Leona touches the Woodbrook sign on their brand new red barn. The Woodbrook sign is made of white horseshoes. The Craigs suffered tremendous losses when Woodbrook caught fire in the summer of 1950. A small white sign warning that smoking is prohibited around the stables is a sober reminder of fire's dangers. Thirty-eight Tri Delta sorority women fill one end of this living room wearing floor length formals in this photograph from October of 1951. According to the 1952 College of Puget Sound yearbook, the Tamanawas, the Betas affiliated with the Tri Delts. During fall term they held a barn dance, a banquet for founders' day and a formal with the Sigma Nu's. (Tamanawas, 1952)

Members of the American Legion's Last Man Club met in November, 1951, in the Model Grill's Flame Room. All the men are wearing caps denoting the Tacoma affiliation. The Club was formed in December of 1938 by World War I veterans who were past Commanders of the Edward B. Rhodes Post of the American Legion. Eight flags are draped over empty chairs in front of the standing men, to honor those who have passed away. The last survivor would receive a 1917 bottle of cognac, kept in a safe deposit box at Puget Sound Bank.

Articles from the collection of Mrs. J.C. Haley were to be part of the international exhibit held at the Y.W.C.A. on November 29, 1951. Mrs. Herman Myhrman, Mrs. Norman Grant and Chinese visitor Miss Ann Sun (from left) happily examine some of the majolica ware from Italy that Mrs. Haley collected on her last visit to Europe. National costumes, folk songs and other collections from foreign lands would be displayed for the public in Weyerhaeuser Hall. This exhibit would be the climax of the World Fellowship Week. The Elks Club staff Christmas party was held on Christmas Eve in 1951. The women wore gardenia corsages and many of the people held presents. A tiny Christmas tree has been decorated and placed on the carpet before the group.
